The Archetype Study of Wen-Hsuan Ts ao s Gen Niao Chien-Kuo Feng Abstract Gen Niao not only is Wen-Hsuan Ts ao s latest work but his first novel of fantasy. It appeals to readers attention for its appealing plat, graceful description, and compassionate feeling. This purpose of this study is to read the work of Gen Niao from the perspective of psychoanalysis and examine the narration of romance, symbol, dream in the work. This study is consisted of six chapters. Chapter One describes the rationale, the purpose, and the objectives of this study. It also explains the procedures of conducting this research. Chapter Two illustrates the literature review of archetype theory, including the concept of archetype, the narration of romance, hero s adventure, and the symbols of dream. Chapter Three discusses the hero s quest and initiation in Gen Niao. In this chapter, the hero s overall adventure process from the call to adventure, departure, adventure to the accomplishment of self-initiation is carefully analyzed. Chapter Four discusses the symbols and images in Gen Niao. Chapter Five explores the symbolic languages of four dreams in Gen Niao from the perspective of psychoanalysis. In addition, how the dreams relate to the story of Gen Niao is addressed in this chapter as well. Chapter Six relates the work of Gen Niao to Ts ao s writing ideas and examines the consistency between Ts ao declared writing intention and the actual writing of Gen Niao. Furthermore, the relationship between the coming-of-age novel and Gen Niao is examined.
