2005 12 161-198 The Immortal Ideal Condition Hidden in the Mi-Fu s Mist Scenery: Take Jinshan as an example * Hsiao Pai Fang * 161
Abstract Mi-Fu, the master of calligraphy and painting in Song Dynasty, is famous for his unique mist scenery in the Chinese painting world. According to Mi-Fu s own words, the mist scenery was absolutely not created by imagination, and he created such a special style based on the natural mist scenery he saw in daily life of his late years after he settled down in Runchou, around Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. When Mi-Fu settled down in Runchou, he visited Jinshan most often. Jinshan is located in the estuary of Yangtze River, a special position where it generates easily a blurred and illusionary ambiance with the mist. This atmosphere also matches with the description for the legendary celestial mountain on the ocean circulated since Chin Shihhuang. Such Jinshan not only attracts Mi-Fu to settle down in Runchou, but also attracts the Song people to see this marvelous sight, to search for the immortal characteristics in the deity world of Taoism, and more further, to climb Jinshan to reach the legendary celestial mountain on the ocean that Chin Shihhuang could never approach. The characteristics of mist scenery are to express the indistinct immortal atmosphere with illusionary clouds and mist by dripping ink. Such ambiance is transmitted from Mi-Fu s feeling toward the scenery of Jinshan, Runchou. Hence, this article is to explore the relationships between the mist scenery in painting and the real scenery of Jinshan by visiting the real sights of Jinshan in Song Dynasty. Keywords: Mi-Fu( ) mist scenery, immortal ambiance, Jingshan, Baojinginguang-Ji. 162
