Abstract The main goal of this research is to inspire students creativity in composition through Creative Thinking Teaching Method in order to investigate the interaction in the process of teaching and learning and the various factors that affect teaching as well as the results that come out from it, and to discuss if the method of creative thinking composition teaching is applicable to 6 th graders. The research method experimented here is Qualitative Research through the ways of observation, documentary collection, interview, quantitative analysis, questionnaires, tape recording, video taping, etc. The collection of data is various in order to have a thorough and detailed analysis and description on learners multi-thinking and multi-reaction in the class. The experimented students were 6 th graders from an elementary school, located in Taichung County, and the instructor in this composition class was Miss Lin. This research was carried out in the second semester, and there were 10 units of creative thinking composition involved in this class. The followings are the results from this research: 1. According to the analysis from teaching, we find students have obvious continuing progress in writing length and grades. Students also have clearer cognition and more vivid and active imagination on how to express themselves more precisely, literally, and fluently. 2. Based on the analysis from students questionnaires and attitude quantitative analysis, we acquire that over 80% of students regard that the method of creative thinking can help them promote their abilities in writing and creativity. In addition, not only students attitude to composition has been improved positively, but their writing skills have been improved also. Furthermore, they also affirm and acclaim the benefits from this composition curriculum. 3. From the analysis of students pre-writings and finished writings under no instructions, we observe that the method of creative thinking teaching in improving students writing is effective and feasible. 4. The curriculum and teaching materials design on creative thinking teaching should incorporate the consideration of students writing ability level and their life experience. Besides, the teaching 4
strategies applied should be variable and flexible. Meanwhile, the teacher himself/herself should have the ability to develop and edit his/her own teaching materials needed, and to do self-study to upgrade and compensate what is in need in the process of teaching and learning. 5. The teaching method applied in creative thinking teaching needs to follow below principles: (A.) To simplify teaching goals not to incorporate too many in one class. (B.) To guide before writing. (C.) To skillfully question students and have appropriate questions to them. (D.) To respect students individual characteristics in writing ability. (E.) To have learning through activities or games.(f.) To provide students plentiful resources and references on the topic while guiding. (G.) Always to look at the positive sides on every individual and to help each student to get rid of negative side factors as possible as we can. (H.) To provide practical rewards. 6. The obstacles confronted in this CTTM research are as follows: for the teacher, they might confront with persevering insistence in curriculum, the proper teaching time management, teacher s teaching attitude, etc.; for the students, the difficulties are the insufficiencies of broad reading and the inefficiencies in basic writing skills, and their performance of originality is hard to develop out, etc. 7. To encourage and inspire intermediate level students to have their own unique and special thoughts, the flexible application of composition guidance handouts can work very well in assisting them. In addition, the design and guidance of learning handouts can inspire and train students ability in creativity. Moreover, students thinking is also activated and motivated. According to the result in this research, we certify that students willingness to write has been largely promoted, and their ability in writing has been gradually built up, too. Consequently, the design in the curriculum of creative thinking teaching is not only applicable in the teaching scenario of this research, but also beneficial and referential to elementary school teachers who want to give it a try. The researcher also provides further suggestions about the notification in this teaching method and references for following researches in this field. 5
