On New Women s Image in Fairy Tales by Female Writers in the 90s in Taiwan Submitted by Guo, Ling-hui National Taitung Teachers College The Graduate Institute of Children s Literature Abstract Fairy tales have always possessed an irresistible charm for children. The rigid stereotyping of genders in classical fairy tales ~ aggressive men, passive women; heroic men, suffering women; dominant men, subordinate women ~ is a clear dichotomy of masculinity and femininity; power and weakness. This has been overturned by the striking rise of feminism. New trends in modern fairy tales have overthrown classical fairy tales, and in so doing have not only deconstructed conventional patriarchal thinking, but also reshaped fresh and new images of the relationship between the sexes. After Martial Law was lifted, multi-cultural elements were imported into Taiwanese society. Issues like gender, racial groups, social classes, cities, towns, and ecology were all raised in a soft but firm voice. In particular, among the creators of children s literature, female writers have been increasing and producing excellent work. Accordingly, this study aims to examine women s images in fairy tales by female writers in the 90s in Taiwan, and to discuss whether the social transmission has created work that overthrows conventional masculine patriarchy. The study also attempts to discover the salient features of the new relationship between the sexes; to analyze the previous elements and characteristics of female images by female writers new awareness; and to trace the connection between female writers background and their work. Finally, the study is also intended to compare different writers and discuss their work in light of current trends and the possibility for their future development.
