1 39 92 11 Geographical Research No. 39, November. 2003 * The historical geographical study of the Taiwanese christening culture: A case of Xuei-gia-liau, Xuei-gia Bau, Yan-Shui-Gang Ting in Japanese Rule Period. ** Sheng-Chin Lin Abstract This thesis is to discuss the three questions about the historical geographical study of the Taiwanese christening culture which are (1) what are the physical environment and the people combination of Xuei-gia-liau? (2) what are the stages of the christening culture development of Xuei-gia-liau people? (3) what are the relations between the christening culture development and the social environments? The answer to the first question is, during Chin Dynasty to Japanese rule Period, the people of Xuei-gia-liau earned a livelihood by agriculture. The main land use had been dry farmland. The people combination had been based on blood ties. The answer to the second question is the christening culture development of Xuei-gia-liau people can be divided into three stages which are before 1926, 1926-1940, 1940-1945. The given name usually was only one Chinese character, and the connotation of given name usually was from regular life before 1926. After 1926, the given name was usually of two characters, and the characters were derived from the habit of Japanese christening culture. After 1940, the adoptation of christening culture was more than before. The answer to the third question is the key influences of the christening culture development are social environment, which involved from decreasing infantile mortality, the raise of level of education * SARS **
2 and the increasing Japanese-speaking population after 1926. And most of all, the Japanese government s policy of name-changing program was enforced after 1940.
