1 Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong Course Code: RELS5335 Understanding Religion through Film 從電影看宗教 (Spring 2019) Course Outline Lecturer: Dr Tong Sau Lin 唐秀連博士 Lecturer s office hour: by appointment Lecture Time: Thursday, 19:00 21:30. Venue: ELB 302 Course Description This course is designed to assist students in recognizing religious concepts, east and west, through analyzing movies that seem to have to do with religion per se. The course will help students explore how religion may be treated as an integral human phenomena and how religion involves the fullness of the human world through film watching. In addition, the course provides students with opportunities to think critically about a wide range of meanings concerning the existence of human beings through particular films. A religious notion of interpretation will be taken to examine how the meanings are constructed and transmitted to viewers through various visual narrative forms and symbols. It also encourages students to appreciate the form of cinematic aesthetics and symbols from the interdisciplinary perspectives. 本課程透過電影賞析, 幫助學生認識東西宗教之本質和概念, 並會探討宗教如何構成一個重要的人類文化現象, 豐富人類的物質與精神文明此外, 本課程將透過特定的電影作品, 激發學生反思人生的價值與意義在方法論上, 則會從宗教研究的角度, 理解電影如何藉視覺敘事方式建構及傳遞其宗教意涵同時, 課程亦會鼓勵學員從跨學科的視角, 賞析電影的符號及美學元素 Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to: Knowledge Outcomes: 1. the components of religious worldviews common to most religions; 2. understand how religion and film intersect. Attitude Outcomes: 1. move beyond viewing films as mere entertainment to understanding them as multi layered texts; 2. a higher sensitivity to the contributing role of religions in human culture and history. Skill Outcomes: 1. develop skills in analytical reading, formal writing, and critical thinking; 2. critically evaluate particular cinematic works in their various forms through the lenses of Religious Studies. Your study contains your discoveries, comments, reflections, responses, comparisons, and questions arising from the analysis of the selected film. Essay Length: 4,000-5,000 words. Papers will be graded according to its content, arguments, organization, and academic referencing style. You need to submit both a soft and a hard copy of your paper. The soft copy should be submitted by pm on April 25, 2019 (Thu) to Blackboard Learn and VeriGuide. The hard copy should be submitted to Miss Tina Tsang of the general office of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies (Room 301, Leung Kau Kui Bldg) on or before the same day. Late submission will be penalized.
