1 EMBARGOED UNTIL AFTER DELIVERY PLEASE CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY Eulogy by Mr Leong Chun Loong, J.P., BBM(L) (27 March 2015) Mr President The family of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew Friends Today, we mourn the loss of our country s first Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. I have been a grassroots leader in Tanjong Pagar Constituency for 39 years. I am privileged to be able to stand here today to pay tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew whom I consider my leader and my friend. His departure is not only a loss to the country but also a deep personal loss for me. Having worked closely with him for so many years, I have developed a profound respect and admiration for Mr Lee and I now wish to share with you some stories of my encounters with this great man. Back in the early days, Lunar New Year celebrations would kick off with the lighting of firecrackers, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. During one celebration, the firecrackers did not go off when lit. After a while, we got impatient, and the MC decided to move on to the National Anthem. However just as the National Anthem was being played, the firecrackers went off loudly. We thought it was quite funny but Mr Lee was not amused at all. Later he told us: If we can t even do this right, how can we run the country? This incident showed us how serious he was about all things concerning Singapore and how he always expected us to do our best for Singapore. Mr Lee cared for the people. At a Tanjong Pagar Family Day Function, we had set up a stage for the day s activities. The key officials were sitting on the stage whilst the residents were sitting in front of the stage. It was getting very hot and sunny. Mr Lee noticed that the residents were perspiring in the sun whilst we the officials were sitting in the shade. He turned around and asked us what we were going to do about it. He was always thinking about the people and he expected us to put their interest above our own. During constituency dinners, Mr Lee would usually like to sit with grassroots leaders so that he could talk to them. We would always arrange the seating such that his old friends would be seated en-route to his table. That made it easy for him to meet them

2 along the way. It would take him some time to get to his table as he would stop by to speak to every familiar face, asking them how they and their families were. This is something he really enjoyed. When Mr Lee heard that his old friends were doing well and leading good lives, his face would light up with pride. Even though Mr Lee is no longer with us, his legacy is something that we Singaporeans will always remember. I am thankful that I had the opportunity of knowing him personally and serving him as a grassroots leader.

3 Eulogy by Mr Leong Chun Loong, J.P., BBM(L) (27 March 2015) 梁镇龙先生 ( 太平绅士, 公共服务星章 ( 勋条 ) 得主 ) 悼词陈庆炎总统李光耀先生的家属各位朋友今天, 我们在这里一起追悼我国建国总理李光耀先生我在丹戎巴葛区当了 39 年的基层领袖今天, 非常感谢大家给予我这个机会, 向我的领导及朋友李光耀先生致敬李先生的逝世, 不只是国家的损失, 也是我个人的一大损失同李先生密切合作了这么多年, 我对他满怀敬仰在这里, 我想跟大家分享我跟这位伟人接触的一些经历从前, 我们区内庆祝农历新年的活动, 会以燃放爆竹拉开序幕, 跟着是全体一起唱国歌在一次庆祝活动上, 爆竹点燃后却没有燃放过了一会儿, 大家开始有些不耐烦, 主持人于是决定进行唱国歌的环节不料, 当国歌开始响起, 爆竹却噼里啪啦地响了起来当时我们都觉得整个场面有点滑稽, 李先生却一点都不觉得好笑过后, 他对我们说 : 如果我们连这点事情都办不好, 又如何能治理好国家呢? 从这件事可以看出, 李先生是如何认真看待一切与新加坡有关的事情, 以及他是如何要求我们必须尽最大努力为国服务李先生也十分照顾人民有一次, 配合丹戎巴葛区家庭日活动, 我们搭建了一个舞台我们安排重要官员坐在台上, 居民则坐在台下当太阳出来, 烈日当空, 李先生注意到居民们被晒得全身是汗, 而我们主办人员却有帐篷遮阴他于是转过身问我们, 准备如何处理这个情况? 李先生时刻都为人民着想, 他也要求我们必须把人民的利益放在本身的利益之上在区内的晚宴活动上, 李先生总喜欢跟基层领袖坐在一块聊天我们总会特别安排他的老朋友们, 坐在他走向座位时会经过的地方, 以方便他跟这些老朋友们见面 1

4 于是, 他需要一段时间才能到自己的位子, 因为他会停下脚步跟每一个认识的人打招呼问好, 也询问他们家人的近况他很乐于这么做当他知道老朋友们一切安好, 脸上就会流露出欣慰的神情尽管李先生离开了我们, 他对新加坡的建设和贡献, 所有新加坡人都会铭记在心有幸认识李先生, 并成为他区内的基层领袖协助他, 我心存感激 2

5 1 Eulogi Encik Leong Chun Loong, Jaksa Pendamai, Bintang Bakti Masyarakat (BBM) (Lintang) (27 March 2015) Presiden, Anggota-anggota Keluarga Mendiang Encik Lee Kuan Yew, Rakan-rakan Hari ini, kita sedang berkabung kerana berpulangnya Perdana Menteri pertama negara kita, Encik Lee Kuan Yew. Saya telah menjadi pemimpin akar umbi di Kawasan Undi Tanjong Pagar selama 39 tahun. Saya berasa bertuah diberi peluang pada hari ini untuk berucap menyanjungi Encik Lee Kuan Yew yang saya anggap sebagai pemimpin dan juga rakan saya. Pemergian beliau bukan sahaja satu kehilangan kepada negara tetapi juga, secara peribadi, satu kehilangan yang besar bagi saya. Setelah bekerja rapat dengan beliau selama bertahun-tahun, saya amat menghormati dan mengagumi beliau dan saya ingin berkongsi dengan anda beberapa kisah semasa saya bekerja rapat dengan pemimpin kita yang hebat ini. Pada masa dahulu, sambutan Tahun Baru Cina dimulakan dengan membakar mercun, diikuti dengan nyanyian Lagu Kebangsaan. Semasa satu acara sambutan, mercun yang dibakar tidak meletup. Selepas beberapa ketika menunggu, kami menjadi tidak sabar dan pengacara majlis mengambil keputusan untuk meneruskan dengan nyanyian Lagu Kebangsaan. Sejurus selepas Lagu kebangsan dimainkan, mercun pun meletup dengan bunyi yang kuat. Kami fikir ini sesuatu yang agak melucukan tetapi Encik Lee tidak berasa begitu sama sekali. Kemudiannya, beliau memberitahu kami: Dalam perkara begini pun kita tidak dapat melakukan dengan betul, bagaimana kita hendak mengendalikan negeri? Peristiwa ini menunjukan betapa serius beliau memandang semua perkara berkaitan Singapura dan selalu berharap agar kami dapat melakukan yang terbaik untuk Singapura. Encik Lee sangat mengambil berat tentang rakyat Singapura. Di majlis sambutan Hari Tanjong Pagar, kami telah membina sebuah pentas untuk kegiatan-kegiatan sambutan hari itu. Pegawai-pegawai penting duduk di atas pentas sementara para penduduk duduk di hadapan pentas. Cuaca menjadi semakin panas dengan sinaran cahaya matahari. Encik Lee mendapati para penduduk yang duduk di hadapan pentas berpeluh-peluh kerana sinaran cahaya matahari sementara para pegawai duduk terlindung darinya.

6 2 Beliau berpusing ke arah kami dan bertanya apa yang akan kami lakukan untuk mengatasinya. Beliau selalu ambil berat tentang rakyat dan beliau harap kami meletakkan kepentingan rakyat dahulu sebelum kepentingan kami. Semasa majlis-majlis makan malam kawasan undi, Encik Lee suka duduk bersama para pemimpin akar umbi supaya beliau boleh beramah-tamah dengan mereka. Kami selalu mengaturkan supaya rakan-rakan lama beliau duduk di meja-meja di kiri kanan sepanjang laluan yang menghala ke meja beliau. Ini memudahkan Encik Lee bertemu mereka semasa berjalan menuju ke meja beliau. Beliau mengambil masa yang agak lama untuk tiba di mejanya kerana beliau akan berhenti untuk berbual dengan setiap orang yang beliau kenali, menanyakan khabar mereka dan keluarga mereka. Ini adalah sesuatu yang sangat menggembirakan beliau. Jika Encik Lee mendapat tahu yang rakan-rakan lama beliau berada dalam keadaan sejahtera dan menikmati kehidupan yang baik, wajah beliau akan kelihatan bahawa beliau gembira dan berasa bangga. Walaupun Encik Lee tidak lagi bersama kita, warisan beliau adalah sesuatu yang akan kita sebagai rakyat Singapura, sentiasa kenangi. Saya rasa bersyukur kerana berpeluang mengenali beliau secara peribadi dan berkhidmat untuk beliau sebagai pemimpin akar umbi.
