THE overwhelming turnout at the I Penang Run 2017 in Seberang Perai showed the love of Penang residents for the state. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that having 15,000 participants is proof that Penangites are always standing together when it comes to their love for the state. This shows that we are successful and have together helped to push for Penang to be an international and intelligent city, he said at the event on the morning of April 9. Lim also announced that the run which attracted 15,942 participants had made it into the Malaysia Book Of Records for the highest number of people taking part in a fun run event. Also present were Seberang Perai Municipal Council president Datuk Maimunah Sharif, research journalist of Malaysia Book of Records Sdn Bhd Siti Hajar Johor and its senior research journalist Nurasyikin Ramli. It is a family-oriented festival that focuses on anime, cosplay, games and Japanese culture. Last year the event attracted around 38,000 participants. This year, it is expected that 50,000 people will turn up. The event will bring the biggest anisong dance party to Malaysia and will feature some of the most wellknown names from Malaysia as well as Japan. DJ Kazu, kradness, kz, May n and nano, Angie, Baozi & Hana, Shine, Ying Tze latte-artist Yuichi, illustrator Fei Giap and many more are all set to entertain the crowd. We hope that Japan and Penang will have closer ties with each other through Japanese themed festivals such as the Bon Odori and Anime Matsuri, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng during the launch of the event on April 18. The Federation of Malaysian Manufactures (FMM) Penang Branch had donated a sum of RM100,000 to the Penang Future Foundation for deserving underprivileged students. Speaking at the 48th annual dinner of the FMM on April 8, the chief minister also gave his assurance that no effort would be spared in advancing the economic well-being of the people and in particular the income disparity between the poor and the well-off. While the manufacturing sector continues to grow, many have since diversified in terms of manufacturing activities as well as other services. CHAIRMAN of the Non-Islamic Places of Worship Fund (Tabung RIBI) Jagdeep Singh on April 16 said he will request the RIBI committee to reconsider a single application of more than RM20, 000 from members for projects related to their place of worship. He said the members have voiced their concerns over the RM20,000 limit in view of the decline of the ringgit value and increase of fuel prices affecting commodities price. In a move to house new and expanding knowledge driven companies in Penang, the state will be spending RM10 million to refurbish this building to turn it into a GBS Centre for investors, he said. Refurbishment works will include a major facelift of the building facade, improvement of shared facilities and most importantly, infrastructure upgrades in line with MdeC S MSC Malaysia Cybercentre standards, Lim said. An approximate total of 110,000 square feet of MSC Malaysia Cybercentre office space will be made available once the building is completed next January. An insult to state assembly CHIEF Minister Lim Guan Eng has labelled plans by Umno lawmakers to table a state assembly motion demanding his resignation as an insult to the legislative body. He also termed the move political revenge over his announcement that his administration will table a motion to condemn Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahaya over the latter s remarks on statutory rape. The state legislative assembly is for debating issues that affect the people and not to be misused for political revenge, Lim said in a press conference at Komtar on Apr 11. We are filing this motion to condemn Shabudin because of what he said about rape victims, Lim added. The Chief Minister said the Umno MP s remarks had caused public anger, which required a response from his administration. He also noted that Shabudin has not apologised for his remarks or been punished by Umno. Last week, Lim said the state government will file a motion at the state legislative assembly in May to condemn Shabudin over his remarks.

Penang has joined the bike sharing fraternity in many other parts of the world like US, China, France and many European countries. Link Bike aims to emulate a similar smart mobility success in Malaysia, Lim said. The Penang Meeting Planners Guide is a comprehensive directory of 130 venues, accommodations, restaurants and suppliers and is designed to assist meeting planners and business events professionals in marketing and sourcing Penang as a preferred business events destination. The chief minister, in his speech, noted the economic contributions of the meetings industry towards the state. Penang has risen to become a preferred second-tier destination in the region for business events. In 2016, the state hosted 141,864 delegates from 1,251 business events, contributing an estimated RM808 million in economic impact to Penang. The Penang government believes in the freedom of worship. 10 10 April 16-30, 2017 New coat of paint for Jalan Jelutong flats Story by Danny Ooi Pix by YB Lim Siew Kim THE 63-year-old Jalan Jelutong flats, comprising 48 units, now look new and well-maintained, thanks to a facelift by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP). A total of RM75,555 was spent to repaint the facade, awning and window grills. The council s Financial Management Committee alternate chairman Joseph Ng said the repainting of the four three-storey blocks was completed on Jan 6. He added that the defects liability period would end on June 30. Ng said the colour used to repaint the blocks was decided by the residents through balloting under the gender responsive participatory budgeting concept. The Jalan Jelutong flats project is one of the council s public housing schemes. Residents pay only RM102 monthly to rent a 408sq ft unit, he said at a press conference at the flats on March 29. 31 王育璇 威省市议员 向童婚说不 联合国儿童基金会 (UNICEF) 在去年曾发布一个短片, 引起极大回响 短片以童话般的婚礼场景开头, 但美好优雅画面的背后, 是被剥夺的童年和未来 披着嫁衣的未成年少女, 脸上流着眼泪步入教堂, 被迫下嫁与自己年龄相距甚远的男子为妻 短片的最后也提醒着 今年将有 1500 万名女童在 18 岁前结婚 在我国, 童婚遍布在各族各地区各社会阶层, 根据妇女 家庭与社会发展部的数据显示, 我国在过去 5 年有超过 9000 起童婚, 而这仅是记录在案的数据 联合国 2010 年的报告曾显示, 我国有 8 万 2000 名年龄介于 15 岁至 19 岁的女童已婚 全球每年有约 5 万位 15 至 19 岁的女孩死于怀孕和分娩的并发症, 其中 10 岁至 14 岁女童死于难产的比例较 20 岁至 24 岁女性高 5 倍 含苞待放的年龄, 却提早踏入婚姻,18 岁以下的女孩在心理和生理上都尚未准备好身为人妇, 更何谈怀孕生子呢? 童婚对女童的影响远远大于男童, 过早承担家庭责任和养儿育女的重担可能导致她们与社会脱节, 她们因生活重心转移而难以完成学业, 失去升学进修的机会 缺少职业和生活技能将使女孩们失去谋生的能力与勇气, 进而陷入经济无法独立和贫困的循环中 童婚的女孩更易遭受家暴 虐待及强迫性行为 因此让女童接受素质教育和各类知识包括性教育知识 医疗卫生常识 法律权益常识 社会生活技能等, 有效降低童婚率 未婚先孕也是童婚的因素之一, 家长在孩子的成长过程中扮演重要的角色, 惟大部分家长面对孩子询问有关性知识课题时, 都含糊其辞难以启齿 许多青少年无法从正确管道获得正确的性知识, 只能通过网络解决对性的迷失, 对性知识一知半解, 并且缺乏对性道德的正确引导, 没有正确的性知识和性观念, 造成青少年发生早孕 性侵等问题 家长可善用日常生活中的机会, 在孩子年幼时进行性教育启蒙, 并教导孩子在成长过程中懂得如何保护自己 回避风险 此外, 家长也应对踏入青春期的孩子进行两性关系 性教育等的交流, 正确地引导孩子, 使他们学会如何正确地处理青春期与他人进行的情感沟通 从社会问题探讨公民意识 郑来兴光大区州议员 公民意识是社会文化的重要组成, 包括公民的思想 道德 素质和文化素养, 良好的公民意识是美好社会的基础, 反之则会带来难以估计的后果, 而现今社会问题的产生, 也直接反映本地公民意识的水平 近期, 在浮罗池滑一带发生的摩托撞死人事件, 即便当时是行人绿灯, 也有画上斑马线, 市政厅也曾推出行人为王的计划, 但因为摩托骑士不遵守交通规则, 以致发生骇人的交通意外 另外, 在光大选区内的沓田仔街, 摩托不能行驶的行人道, 即便是放上告示牌, 还是有摩托贪图一时的方便, 在交通阻塞时驶上行人道 在垃圾问题方面, 市政厅所设立告示牌禁止丢垃圾的地方, 往往不只不会带来应有的效果, 反而吸引更多人到那个地方丢垃圾 市政厅虽然有责任处理眼前的问题, 但是这些问题的产生, 也让我们看到大家的公民意识水平仍有待提升 培养公民意识可以从教育着手, 在不同阶段的教育, 融入公民意识元素, 包括教育民众勿乱丟垃圾 随意停车 破坏公物及遵守交通规则等, 让他们了解公民应有的责任, 以及欠缺公民意识对健康 环境, 甚至自身生命所带来的破坏性 提升公民意识可能需要 10 年 20 年, 甚至是一代人的时间, 但是, 我希望身在槟州的大家, 能向日本 台湾及新加坡等国家看齐, 不轻易放弃, 以便能与市政厅 州政府一同携手打造更美好的槟城未来 2017 年 04 月 16 日 30 日众议言 可怕的落伍思维 黄汉伟亚依淡区州议员 杨顺兴垄尾区州议员 17 最近槟城出了一名全球闻名的国会议员, 他就是巫统打昔牛汝尔区国会议员沙布丁, 根据报章报导, 他发表了 先奸后娶 言论而闻名全世界 但如果我国是以这样另类的方式新闻名国际, 那可真的是很悲哀 我相信, 不只是妇女组织, 朝野要声讨他的人已经多到数不清, 所以, 我也没有必要大书特书来声讨他, 但我觉得, 我们有必要进一步反思, 在这文明的新世纪与国度里, 这种言论出现是不是表示我们的社会出现了问题否? 据了解, 这名国会议员曾经是一名法官 我不晓得会不会有人认同他所发表的言论? 国内是不是会有一群人是深信 先奸后娶 论是行得通的, 而且没有什么不妥? 如果真相是这样, 我觉得很我们的社会已经是变得很可怕 因为, 表面上我们要迈向 2020 年先进国, 但是, 若国内还有一群人抱着类似可怕的非常落伍思想, 这不就是告诉我们, 我国的几十年的教育体系失败了吗? 先奸后娶 应该是文明史前, 或者是相对落后的国家, 或者是旧时代蒙古草原的历史遗物 能够接受这类惯例的国家或社会都有一个共同点, 就是父权主义至上盛行的国家, 在他们的国度里, 女性几乎没有什么地位, 如北非国家及部分中东国家等 难道, 我们要承认, 我们和这些国家一样落后, 甚至更落后, 还是存在旧社会吗? 沙布丁的言论引起了不满与不安, 固然要声讨, 但是声讨之余, 我们是不是应该探讨, 为什么在我们社会里还有那么一小樶人会支持这样的论述, 究竟是因为政治因素, 还是他们是真心欢迎这项法律的? 我相信如果一名欧美国家的立法议员发表这种先奸后娶的言论, 肯定需要辞职谢罪 我希望我们的社会, 认真反思, 这种言论的危害, 已经是严重的政治与教育制度的问题 我们必须改变这个社会, 改变这个国家, 以避免国家倒退到落后腐败的史前旧时代! 友好城市 2013 年 10 月在此专栏我曾写道 : 议员工作多而杂, 从立法议会发言 表决 质询 提议案 与朝野辩论互动 推动议题到地方发展, 民生问题 调解冲突 参与各族及宗教庆典 探访孤老 拜访菜市场 巡视灾区, 也包含了国际接轨, 推动城市外交等琳琅满目的工作及责任 虽然我把与国际接轨, 推动城市外交放在最后一段, 不过城市外交却越来越突显其重要性 我在 2017 年 4 月前后在州政府办公楼会见了来自中国广东省广州市政府及海南省三亚市政府访问团 我也在槟州大会堂为中国天津海浪花艺术团文艺歌舞公演晚会上致开幕词 同时, 我的议员同僚也率团到印尼棉兰出席商贸活动 在 2008 年前, 与乔治市缔结为姐妹市的是澳洲阿德莱德 (1973), 印尼棉兰 (1984) 及中国厦门 (1993) 有鉴于外交不只限于国与国, 也包括城市, 乡团什至学校 越来越多的槟城中学与其他城市的中学缔结为姐妹学校 由于缔交姐妹市需经过外交部繁文缛节之批准, 槟州政府采取务实态度, 与多个外国城市结交友好城市, 打开城市外交的大格局 乔治市已和 8 个城市结为友谊城市即台湾台北 (2011), 台湾高雄 (2011), 泰国曼谷 (2012), 印尼日惹 (2012), 中国中山市 (2012), 南朝鲜昌原市 (2012), 泰国普吉岛 (2014), 中国三亚市 (2017) 威省亦与西澳弗里曼特尔 (Fremantle) 在 1978 年建立为姐妹市 威省也与南朝鲜光州市建立为友谊城市 (2013) 除了市与市之间的外交, 槟州也于日本神奈 (Kanagawa Prefecture) 在 1991 年建立姐妹州关系 槟州亦与海南省结为友好省州关系 (2016) 由于航空业及通讯业的快速发展, 城市与城市之间的经济, 文化及教育交流日益增加 城市外交除了可促进旅游业, 亦可彼此交流互访从中吸取管理城市的经验 作为立法议员, 亦须具备国际视野, 以扮演好推动城市外交的工作

A publication launch was held by the Penang Women s Development Corporation (PWDC) in conjunction with International Women s Day and Projek Kita Entrepreneurs Workshop on March 25, 2017 in Ixora Hotel Seberang Perai. Three types of publications for different target groups were launched, namely, Gender Responsive and Participatory Budgeting (GRPB) Manual for civil servants and local government; How to Implement Investment Projects People in your community Guidebook for community leaders; and brochures on Government Budget is for the General Public. GRPB manual is to be used by government officials and staff in implementing GRPB in their scope of work. In today s context, the manual is a tool to support the process of institutionalising GRPB under the Strategic Action Plan which was planned by the City Council of Penang Island (MBPP) and Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) together with PWDC. The manual consists of two parts, where Part One covers the measures for the implementation of GRPB in community and public facilities projects, while Part Two on how to institutionalise GRPB in government institutions. The manual provides examples on how GRPB pilot projects were carried out and the positive impact it had brought upon since 2012, such as People s Participation projects in PPR Jalan Sungai, PPR Ampangan, Kampung Sungai Chenaam and Project Duit Kita, Hak Kita in Machang Bubuk. On the other hand, Public Facilities Project gave examples of participation processes that have been carried out in Taman Tunku Seberang Jaya, Campbell Street Markets, Linear Park Taman Kenari and many others. The manual includes process to integrate GRPB in the overall strategic planning and budgeting in local government, including in the budget planning under the Outcome-Based Budgeting (OBB) which is the latest standard of budget planning. In addition, the manual also provides information and examples on the importance of data and measuring instruments such as public expenditure tracking, benefit incidence analysis and so on to measure success and improvements that need to be done based on the results obtained Another publication is the Guidebook for Leaders in Community: How to do People s Participatory Project in your Community is a reference in particular meant for the leaders at the grassroots, such as the state assemblyperson, Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK), associations and NGOs in implementing GRPB process in their respective areas. The handbook is expected to be a catalyst as leaders can take this manual to guide them in implementing GRPB in their respective communities or work areas. Brochures about GRPB for civil society aims to create awareness and knowledge of Government Budget Cycle and how people can get involved in the planning of budget at local government. The event was launched by Chong Eng, Exco for Youth & Sports, Women, Family and Community Development, and in attendance was Dato Patahiyah Ismail, Dato Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Lee Khai Loon, officers and staff of MBPP and MPSP, and also Projek Kita Entrepreneurs Workshop s participants. Datuk Mazlan Othman giving talks to over 200 participants of WiZ2017. Datuk Mazlan Othman: Transparency in all procedures to empower more women in Science World-renowned astrophysicist Datuk Mazlan Othman advised the younger generations to be determined should they want to be successful in science as career in science is a lifestyle choice. Datuk Mazlan Othman made the above statement when she was delivering a talk on Breaking the Glass Ceiling at the Women in Zcience (WiZ) Conference and Workshop 2017 held by Penang Women s Development Corporation (PWDC) and Tech Dome Penang on March 3. Datuk Dr Mazlan is Malaysia s first astrophysicist. Being the founding director of Malaysian National Space Agency (Angkasa), she urged women in science to find the balance between their career and role as mothers, in order to climb higher in this field. The national icon of Malaysian astrophysics too, proposed a number of strategies to promote more women into the leadership roles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). She suggested to award women in science, and asked various stakeholders to raise awareness of gender dimensions and issues. Besides that, she also urged the authority to mainstream gender and encouraged transparency in all procedures, especially in the narrowing the gender pay gap. Datuk Mazlan Othman highlighted that gender-sensitive management is much needed, and organisations to uphold gender-friendly policies. The three-days WiZ2017 event was organised to mark International Women s Day in March. Other than Datuk Mazlan Othman, the founder of Piktochart, Goh Ai Ching and National Instrument s Head of R&D Azian Wahab too, delivered talks to participants on the second and third day of the event, respectively. Projek Kita Entrepreneurs Workshop A capacity building workshop was held on March 25, 2017 at Ixora Hotel, to provide understanding and support to the participants of Projek Kita. The interactive workshop was attended by 20 participants from PPR Jalan Sungai, PPR Ampangan and some other individuals from the community who were interested to gain knowledge and understanding on how to run a business. Three different sessions incorporating activities were conducted at the workshop, including Company Registration Briefing by Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), Book Keeping by Dr Yuvaraj Ganesan, and Basics of Marketing by Dr Junaimah Jauhar and Dr Salmi Mohd Isa from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Projek Kita is an initiative under the Gender Responsive and Participatory Participants of the capacity building workshop actively engaged during the interactive session. Budgeting (GRPB) Programme, which was initiated last year. The idea of this project was inspired by a participatory project which took place in UK as well as result of participatory budgeting held at PPR Jalan Sungai and PPR Ampangan. This year, Projek Kita will also get inputs from the Women s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Programme, a new programme under PWDC.

For the next 16 days until April 30, PIFF2017 will feature sizzling food and culture of Penang. Penangites as well as visitors to the state will be spoiled for choice as each weekend will depict a different culinary theme Savour the Past (Street Food Festival), Enjoy the Present (Taste of Penang) and Relish the Future (Fringe Food Festival). Among the mouth-watering delicacies which were available to be savoured included the usual but famous char koay teow, Hokkien mee, mee goreng, Indian- Muslim dishes and the oddly but also aptly named Daging Harimau Menangis (The Meat which made the tiger shed tears) whose seller came all the way from Tasek Gelugor. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who also attended the event with his wife Betty Chew, urged those who were present not to miss the opportunity to eat to their hearts delight. Participants of the PIFF2017 thronged the central business district to whet their appetites. Penang is recognised for having the best street food not only in the region but also the world. So, for this once-a-year event, don t hesitate to eat all you can and pick yourself up again to eat after you drop, he told the massive crowd. The event provided the opportunity for visitors to Penang to sample its world famous street food which is recognised as being one of the best. True enough, a skeleton was found underneath it. We have yet to do carbon dating because we just discovered it, but it is estimated to be around 5,000 years old. The construction work has been stopped and we will start excavation works today, he told a press conference with Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng at Komtar on Apr 19. Also present were Deputy Chief Minister 11, Prof. Dr. P. Ramasamy. A backhoe was digging up the site on Monday when it uncovered parts of a human bone, believed to be the femur part, at only 70cm under the surface. With the discovery, we immediately stopped the digging works and took over to conduct the excavation and so far, we have uncovered parts of a skull and rib cage with pottery fragments, Mokhtar Mokhtar (left) at the excavation site in Guar Kepah after the discovery of the skeleton. said. He believed that they could possibly find three skeletons in the site, but this remains to be seen as it would take them at least two weeks to excavate the current findings. The Penang State Government will fund RM20,000 towards the project. The Universiti Sains Malaysia s Centre for Global Archaeological Research had conducted excavation works and research on the site back in 2010 where prehistoric shells, pottery remnants, tool remnants and food remnants from the Neolithic period were found, documented and dated. We have the shells, the food, the hunting tools and now we have the skeleton so the Guar Kepah Archaeology Gallery will be complete with all these on display. The skeleton, once fully excavated, will be brought back to USM for carbon dating and it will be placed back at the spot it was found after the gallery is constructed. Based on previous excavation works done on the site since the 1860s, Mokhtar believed that this skeleton was buried at least 18m underneath a shell mound. Guar Kepah was the first archaeological excavation site in Malaysia conducted by Sir G.W. Earl back in Three shell mounds were found at the site when 37 skeletons were dug up then and these skeletons were taken to Leiden, Holland. Meanwhile, at a press conference on April 25, Lim said the state government will write to the National Heritage Department and the Tourism Ministry to get them to apply for the classification of the Guar Kepah archeology site as a Unesco heritage site once the digging and research are completed. Lim said this after personally witnessing the findings of the skeletal remains believed to be that of a woman. There s the Perak Man in Perak and now we have the Penang Woman. We have high expectations of finding more skeletal remains of the pre-historic man or woman, he said.

44 18 April 16-30, 2017 Recognition for STPM top achievers Story by Victor Seow Pix by Law Suun Ting OUTSTANDING Penang candidates of last year s Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysian (STPM) received their due recognition from the state government when each of them received a certificate of excellence and a cash reward amounting to RM1,000. These 47 outstanding students, who scored 4.0 GPA were from various schools in Penang. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who personally gave out the certificates and cash awards on April 17, urged the students to return to Penang upon completion of their tertiary studies to contribute to the state s growth. To curb brain drain, we have initiated the state s scholarship programme under the Penang Future Foundation (PFF) for deserving students. The only condition is for the recipient to work in Penang for eight years after graduation, Lim said in his speech. Also present at the event were Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P. Ramasamy, exco members Phee Boon Poh (Welfare, Caring Society and Environment), Lim Hock Seng (Works, Utilities and Transport) and Chong Eng (Youth & Sports and Women, Family & Community Development) as well as Lim s political secretary Wong Hon Wai. IT was breezy morning on April 16 when people from the neighborhood of Island Glades joined a walk led by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on April 16 in commemoration of the third anniversary of the death of former Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh. The event was organized by the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Island Glades. Taman Kejiranan Karpal Singh was the starting and ending point of the 2.4km walk. Gurmit Kaur the late Karpal s wife, son Ramkarpal Singh, who is current Bukit Gelugor MP, Seri Delima assemblymember RSN Rayer, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and his wife took part in the walk as well. The cinema which was then considered a high-tech cinema for screening movies with sound has been restored to become the Majestic Theater. On April 14, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng officiated the grand opening of the Majestic Theater. I would like to congratulate Mr.Jonathan Foo for restoring this building and I m sure that the restoration work which cost RM5 million will pay off. It will pay off in terms of the legacy of the building which covers its culture, heritage and past. A city needs culture, arts, music and heritage in order for it to have soul. We should infuse heritage in urban living, Lim said. Those who appreciate the past and the present would be able to have a successful future. I believe it will be a nostalgic moment for the older generation to witness the reopening of this place, added Lim. I believe Penangites (Penang-Lang) have what I call creative and artistic DNA within them. Many renowned artists that I know are from Penang, Foo, who is chief executive of 1919 Global Sdn Bhd, said. The Majestic is a new centre for the performing arts and through this we want to provide a launching pad for Penang s talents to the international stage. Majestic is not just another building. It is a symbol of Penang s tenacity, its ability to transform from a trading port to an international marketplace and a great city. 46 20 April 16-30, 2017 Don t lay a finger on council officers, public told Story by Victor Seow Pix by Law Suun Ting ILLAYAPOPARTHY Chandran was just doing his job as an enforcement officer for the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) when he was assaulted by the owner of a vehicle that he was issuing a summons on March 22 for not parking in a designated parking lot. In the 8.15pm incident which took place at a service road along Jalan Sungai Dua, the disgruntled owner pushed llayapoparthy to the ground and punched him on the face. Subsequently, a police report was lodged at the Sungai Nibong police station. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng held a press conference on March 27 to highlight the seriousness of the offence. It s a serious criminal offence for someone to use force to prevent a public servant from performing his duties. Section 353 of the Penal Code stipulates an imprisonment of up to seven years or fine, or both, for those who are found guilty of using criminal force to deter public servants from carrying out their duties, he said. Also present were Penang Island mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail and MBPP councillors Ong Ah Teong, Joseph Ng, Ahmad Azrizal Tahir and Harvindar Singh. It s my hope that enforcement officers from MBPP or Seberang Perai Municipal Council will not be prevented from carrying out their duties by use of force by the public. CM hands over bereavement payment It was most heart wrenching when Lim (left) and Maimunah (right) consoled the parents of Mohd Faiz who could not control their tears. IT was indeed a solemn occasion when Suhaimi Hashim and his wife Azizan Zakaria turned up at Komtar on March 27 to receive the bereavement payment from the state government over the death of their son Mohd Faiz Suhaimi who was killed when a taxi hit him on March 23. Mohd Faiz, a 28-year-old bachelor who worked for the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP), drove to his workplace on the day of the accident and parked opposite the Jawi Cleaning Depot. While crossing the road on that rainy morning, he was hit by a taxi and killed at 6.50am. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was present to pass the bereavement payment to Mohd Faiz s parents, recorded his deep felt condolences over their loss. This token amount of RM1,500 bereavement payment to the family of Mohd Faiz Suhaimi symbolises the shared grief of the state government and his family over his death. I was told that Mohd Faiz was a responsible staff of the MPSP in his two years of service, Lim said. Also present was MPSP president Datuk Maimunah Mohd Sharif who described Mohd Faiz, a Kedahan from Bandar Baru, as a conscientious worker and recorded her appreciation for his services. I sincerely thank him for his services and contributions to MPSP. Apart from what the state government had given this morning to lessen the loss of his family, MPSP had also contributed some bereavement payment on the day of Mohd Faiz s burial, Maimunah added.

Work will begin in the morning around 8am and it will take one whole day to be completed. If the weather does not allow the work to be completed as scheduled, then it will be brought forward to the next day. Many complaints from the public as well as the local residents were received due to poor road condition. Thus in order to tackle the problem, the 540 sq metres of uneven road will be covered with tar, Penang Island City Council (MBPP) councillor Wong Yuee Harng said during a site visit to Yeoh Jetty on April 19. We would like to seek the cooperation of local residents and also the public to park their cars elsewhere on that particular day to ensure that road resurfacing work can be done without any disruption. There will be some inconvenience while work is in progress but once it is completed it will bring much comfort to everyone, Wong said. The cost of the project is RM15,120 and the allocation is from MBPP councillors Wong Yuee Harng and Sophia Shung Yin Ni. Also present during the site visit were Pengkalan Weld JKKK chairman S. Ragindran, engineer Siti Norhana Hashim and assistant engineer Haslina Adni Adnan from MBPP s engineering department.
