Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state executive council (exco) had agreed in principle during the first exco meeting to implement the rent-toown policy. The state is concerned with the people s welfare. Some cannot afford to own a low-cost (LC) or a low medium-cost (LMC) unit, while some cannot obtain a bank loan to own the unit. So they have no choice but to only be a tenant, he told a press conference before visiting the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) flats in Ah Quee Street on June 21. Chow said that the rent-to-own policy is not new. It is not a new policy. He, however, said the policy would not include the flats owned by MBPP. On a separate matter, Chow said the council was planning to replace the roof of the MBPP Ah Quee Street flats next year at a cost of about RM500,000. Attending the Raya Open House of Yassin, who s chairman of Surau Jalan Kedah, has been an annual affair since Chow opened his service centre within the compound of the Kedah Road flats nearly 10 years ago. According to the patriarch, it is the unpretentious character of the chief minister that won the hearts and minds of the Kedah Road flats community and more so of his family. My family and I are greatly honoured and thankful for the Chief Minister s presence in our home for buka puasa this evening. YAB is truly a man of the people. Just one phone call and he will arrive in no time. Despite his busy schedule, he always has time for us, said Yassin on June 15. Chow, on his part, remarked that Chow taking a short break from dinner to address Yassin (seated left) and his family members. refilling his plate with the food served at Yassin s home is a must without fail. I have been attending Haji Yassin s Raya Open House without fail for the past eight or nine years. All this while, Haji Yassin has been most helpful to me and my assistants in helping the local community. Hari Raya fete to remember WAVES of people thronged Jalan Padang Kota Lama for the Penang 2018 Aidilfitri Celebration on June 23 which featured not only great food but also the rich cultural heritage the state is famous for. Anime parade set to enthrall Japanese pop culture lovers THE funky, vibrant and colourful Penang Anime Matsuri Summer Parade 2018 returns on July 7-8 with more fun offerings for Japanese pop culture fans in Malaysia. Penang Anime Matsuri Summer Parade (PAM) is an annual event which the state government through Penang Global Tourism has been organising since The parade has been the biggest Anisong event in Malaysia, featuring Anime, Cosplay and Games (ACG), Anisong, movie screenings and Japanese pop culture. Last year, the event saw some 42,000 attendees over two days where five international Anisong acts and four celebrated cosplayers were invited. This year A-listed artistes from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan as well as Japan are set to entertain the crowd with their exciting programmes. Local J-Rock bands - Flying Pan and PHNX - will be hitting the stage to wow their fans with crowd-favourite anime-themed songs. This year, over 50,000 attendees are expected to take part in the Penang Anime Matsuri Summer Parade. Adopt a book for a good cause PANTAI Jerejak assemblymember Datuk Saifuddin Nasution on June 10 visited the Book Adoption Centre in Taman Sungai Nibong (TSN BAC) near Bayan Baru. He was invited by TSN BAC volunteers to visit and understand more about this community book project and how it had raised some RM28,000 to date for charity. TSN BAC, located within the Tzu Chi Recycling & Education Centre, is a community book centre that not only finds homes for pre-loved books but also raises funds that support the Tzu Chi dialysis centre in Penang. The public can walk into the Book Adoption Centre (BAC) to adopt books for their own reading pleasure or adopt books for their schools or community centres. Saifuddin, who was given a tour of the recycling centre and BAC, came away impressed by the effort and dedication put into TSN BAC by its team of 32 volunteers. Story by K.H. Ong THE furore over tree cutting near the Tanjung Bungah market for a proposed housing project has been resolved. Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Yew Tung Seang said there was a misunderstanding by a group of 25 residents and Tanjung Bungah Residents Association (TBRA) members as they hugged the wrong tree during their protest on June 13. The confusion arose when they thought the trees to be felled are along Jalan Loh Poh Heng. But actually, the trees marked for cutting are located at the other entrance to the site from Lebuh Sungai Kelian, said Yew, who held an afternoon dialogue with the representatives of the group at his office on June 14. They accepted and are quite happy (with my explanation). I just want to clarify this issue as there is also a petition to the council to halt tree cutting. The representatives were TBRA chairman Meena Raman, MBPP councillor Khoo Salma Nasution, Dr Kam Suan Pheng, Yan Lee, Andrew Han and Agnes James. Yew said he brought his team, including two arborists, to the site on June 14. Interestingly, he said he saw a placard with the words I absorb 22kg of CO2 yearly. So let me live, placed on the tree that was not meant to be cut down. Yew said the developer had applied to chop down 24 trees but MBPP had only approved 21 with the remaining two trees to be retained and one to be transplanted. So far, the developer had chopped down 20 trees, believed to be 30 to 50 years old. The NGOs are not in the wrong. We won t simply allow any tree to be chopped down. If it s unavoidable, we try our best to deal with it. We are working hard for a lowcarbon city. 7 June 16 30, Housing Development Act needs to be amended, says Jagdeep Story by Tanushalini Moroter EXCO for Local Government, Housing and Town & Country Planning Jagdeep Singh says the Housing Development Act needs to be amended to address the issue of owners of affordable housing units renting them out to third parties. Commenting on a news report which stated that the Cassia Barat Residents Community wants the Housing and Local Government Ministry to intervene in the issue of foreigners living in their residential area, Jagdeep raised his concern with regards to the Act. Actually, for low and lowmedium cost housing, it should be inhabited by the owners, not third parties even if they are locals. But, we see so many low and low-medium cost houses rented out to third parties. I see this problem from the legal perspective where there should be an amendment to the Housing Development Act, he said in a press conference on June 11 at his office. The festival has become one of Asia s must-visit events, and this year it will be held from Aug 4 to Sept 2. GTF director Joe Sidek at a press conference on June 13 revealed exciting programmes throughout the month-long celebration. One of the must-see programmes is BLIND an urban performance from Brazil. This social experiment and interactive art showcase has travelled the world and will be landing in Penang for the very first time. They will be taking to the streets of George Town during the festival. Upgrading Jalan Makloom drain to tackle floods DATOK Keramat assemblymember Jagdeep Singh, Jelutong MP R.S.N Rayer and exco for Works, Utilities and Flood Mitigation Zairil Khir Johari made a site visit to the flood mitigation project at Jalan Makloom which is currently under construction. The low-lying areas surrounding Jalan Perak such as Jalan Kampung Masjid Hashim Yahya and Kampung Dodol are flood-prone areas and as such some flood mitigation efforts have been undertaken. The problem with Kampung Masjid Yahya is the Sungai Jelutong, thus in 2010, the state government widened and deepened the river as part of the flood mitigation project. This reduced the incidents of floods markedly. Now, at Jalan Makloom, the drain is unable to contain the water due to its (small) size. It does not flow well, so I appealed to the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) to widen and deepen the drain. I m very happy to announce that my appeal has been approved and the size of the drain will be upgraded and will be equipped with water pumps, said Jagdeep during the visit on June 12. The project (cost RM290,874.60) which commenced in April will take approximately six months to be completed. There are also several other projects (flood mitigation) to be carried out in the constituency of Datok Keramat, added Jagdeep, who s also exco for Local Government, Housing and Town & Country Planning.

Organised by George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GT- WHI), the exhibition is aimed at instilling a sense of belonging among the visitors to the George Town World Heritage Site (GT- WHS). We want to inspire them to play an active role in safeguarding the cultural heritage of George Town, GTWHI general manager Dr Ang Ming Chee said on June 14. I think it is time for us to know our town a bit better. This exhibition showcases the rich built and living cultural heritage of George Town through interactive and creative means. We need to work collectively to ensure a sustainable management; through shared responsibilities and commitment, and with a constructive approach, Chow said in his speech before opening the exhibition at the Bangunan UAB in China Street Ghaut. So, we raised funds for Loh and now some 125 donors have contributed RM24,311 to the family. This will be used for their living expenses, said Ong on June 6. The principal of Top Leader, Elaine Loke, has even come forward to sponsor the pre-school studies of their younger daughter. Ong said he and his team have helped Oon with the Social Security Organisation (Socso) application and will also seek help from the State Welfare Department and Penang Equitable Economic Agenda (AES) and Mutiara Food Bank.

16 2 要闻 2018 年 6 月 16 日 30 日 过去曾与曹观友接触的人 社团组织 党团都知道, 曹观友是少有守时的政治人物 / 政府长官, 出席活动或约会, 都是早到的多 ( 所以我说他不算 准 时, 因为他一直都早到 ) 记得在曹首长上任的几天内, 州政府给州议员们在光大 5 楼主办了一场汇报会, 注明时间是上午 9 时正开始 8 时 5 5 分, 高级助理进来跟首长说, 州秘书通知说, 出席的人数现在不是很多, 麻烦叫首长 9 点 15 分才下来 曹首长看一看表, 问 : 我们说 9 点开始是吗? 是的 CM 然后, 他穿上大衣, 不理一众助理的 劝解 ( 其实大家也是在传达州秘书的话而已 ), 抛下一句, 说 9 点 start 就 9 点 start 啦 然后, 就这样走了下去 留下一团劝阻失败的助理们 2 小时后, 他回到办公室, 刚好我有事要询问首长, 还没有来得及开口, 他就对我说, 刚才很多 YB 都差不多 9 点 15 分这样才到 噢, 然后? 曹首长, 你是想要我跟 YB 们说下次守时一点吗? 还是告诉他们, 以后要是迟到会被扣薪? 没有 曹首长什么都没有说 我只有 Noted 明白了, 下次要乖乖早点出门, 尤其是我这种即没有官车司机载又需要等公共交通的 咖厘啡 自此之后, 你就会发现, 曹首长预料晚上 8 时才抵步的节目, 尽管仅仅 6 公里之遥的路程, 同事们都会离谱地 6 时 45 分出门 ( 好啦, 我承认那个傻同事是我好不好 ), 抵达之后在附近的咖啡店从容地 Hea 一下, 一旦保镖报料说首长启程, 我们才不至于慌成一团 新官上任, 很多团体都很喜欢组团礼貌拜会一下 有次, 一组人当中有一部分太早到, 曹首长说先安置他们在会议室, 待其他人到齐 时间到了再知会他一下, 他想趁空档处理一下公务 于是, 陪同代表团的同事在工作群组里发讯, 请跟 C M 说, 时间到了, 这里人齐了, 我在会议室陪着他们 看群组内无人回应, 天生 鸡婆 个性使然, 我于是以 100 米冠军的速度 ( 我以前真的是百米冠军 ), 跑到曹首长的办公室跟他说大家准备好了 他抬头, 看一看手表, 说 已经迟了 3 分钟... 文 : 张燕芬 从我的座位跑到曹首长的办公室, 差不多三分之一圈的光大啊, 我从收到讯息后已经尽力跑很快了, 可是还是迟了 3 分钟 换了新的老板, 要理解他的作风, 当然是从那个跟得他最久的人下手 于是, 郑来兴州议员就理所当然成为我们 盘问 的对象 来兴说, 他 ( 曹观友 ) 一直以来都是这样的, 他不喜欢人家等他, 所以常常早到, 但是如果他比预定时间早到而你比他迟抵达但是还没有到预定开始的时间, 其实是不要紧的, 因为你没有迟到, 大家可以呆呆地等到预定时间, 节目才准时开始, 他是 O K 的 现在好啦, 有了首长的光环, 从首长抵步到等待节目开始的空档, 可以暂时把曹观友首长 借 给民众自拍或者合照一轮, 空等的机率并不多 知道了这个曹首长习惯早到的个性, 我们这些 小的, 就自我预料早半句钟到 冷笑话天王首长在偶尔准时抵步时 ( 因为他常常早到, 所以准时算 偶尔 ), 他还会反问我, 你, 干嘛这样早到的? Errr, 你这样问, 我该说什么好呢? 曾经有一次, 约访的媒体机构, 其 大头 在约访时间前 准准 抵达, 其他职员早就 setup 器材等她 大头 一到, 我带领她们进去会议室, 然后透过大厅再进入办公室通知曹首长, 结果敲门敲了好久, 都不见曹首长回应 后来才发现, 原来曹首长透过闭路电视看到他们抵步, 时间一到, 就以迅雷不及掩耳的速度, 从办公室另一个直透的门进入会议室, 直接 准时 开始访问, 搞到我们不断在会议室和办公室间奔跑, 一踏进会议室, 看到正在访问中的曹首长, 又瞄了手表一下, 依然什么都没说 所以, 下一次, 当你看到曹首长看手表时, 请好自为之

17 2018 年 6 月 16 日 30 日要闻 3 乔治市 : 美丽与不羁 入遗证书首曝光 乔治市世界遗产机构主办 乔治市 : 美丽与不羁 特展, 透过创意与互动的方式展示乔治市丰富的物质与非物质文化遗产, 更首次展出由联合国教科文组织于 2008 年, 授予槟城乔治市和马六甲的世界文化遗产证书 乔治市世界遗产机构总经理洪敏芝说, 是张证书是该机构向国家遗产局申请后, 由当局制作的复制版本, 而正版依然由当局继续保管 槟州首席部长曹观友为特展主持开幕礼, 并亲自将证书挂在看板上, 供民众阅览 他说, 这是槟州人民第一次看到此证书, 希望人们能从乔治市在历史 意义和精神上所取得的认可中, 获得启发 洪敏芝说, 早期的乔治市有着不同的文化, 如商港文化 饮食文化 青少年文化以及印刷文化, 不仅彰显了多元社区群体的生活与工作方式, 也形成了乔治市今日的面貌与特色, 并继续推动其未来发展 是次特展将在大街路头 UAB 大楼向公众开放至 7 月 27 日, 时间是早上 11 时至晚上 7 时, 逢周一休息, 入场免费 配合乔治市入遗 10 周年主题, 是次特展将分为过去 现在与未来三大部分, 引导参观者对乔治市世遗称产生归属感, 并藉此启发民众更积极保护乔治市的文化遗产 出席开幕礼者包括槟州行政议员杨顺兴 槟岛市长尤端祥和彭加兰哥打区州议员魏子森 民众也可在展览一睹多份旧报纸的新闻 展览展出多种可在旧时咖啡店寻获的零食 是次展览还原旧时咖啡店的摆设 洪敏芝 ( 左 ) 与曹观友将证书挂在看板上, 供民众阅览 不反对屋主改古迹建筑用途曹观友 : 需照指南进行复兴工程 槟州首席部长曹观友指出, 乔治市内逾 4000 间古迹建筑, 其中约 3% 或 4% 由外国公司和个人所拥有, 他不反对新屋主改变有关建筑物的原本用途, 但大前提是, 新屋主需要按照古迹维修及保护指南进行复兴工程 他说, 乔治市获颁授世界文化遗产地位之时, 乔治市内有超过 间古迹建筑失修 入遗后, 一些个人和外国集团看好老房子的价值, 觉得其有投资和发展潜能, 便将这些以前要倒塌的房子购下, 进行修复工作 他认为, 最重要的是根据古迹维修及保护指南进行复兴工程, 再视乎有关建筑物是否适合延续其原本用途, 倘若不适合, 那就输入新元素, 好让老房子能有新生命 他说, 倘若管理不当, 乔治市随时可能失去世界文化遗产地位, 而这原因亦主导着州政府尽力管理好乔治市 询及外国集团采用同样设计已复兴古迹建筑时, 他指希望这些集团可以采用不同设计进行复兴和装修, 而不应该让整个乔治市都看到同样的涉及 他说, 技术评估小组有必要确保任何的申请, 特别是在外观上的申请是多元化的

18 4 要闻 2018 年 6 月 16 日 30 日 修宪限首长受委不超过两次 曹观友 : 欢迎民众提出意见 槟州首席部长曹观友说, 行政议会在召开第一次会议时, 就要求州法律顾问研究修宪, 以兑现希盟在大选时, 许下的限制首长任期两届的承诺 首长任期只限两届 是槟州希望联盟在第 14 届大选竞选宣言中,11 个领域的 68 项承诺中, 位列第一个领域即 能干 公信及透明施政 里的首项承诺 曹观友表明, 修改州宪法, 才有法律根据 第 2 次会议上, 法律顾问提呈修宪建议, 即在宪法第 7 条第 2 节增加条文, 列明州议员不得受委首席部长超过两次 (No member of the Legislative Assembly may be appointed as Chief Minister more than twice) 这项增加条文看似简单, 但为了让它更完善, 州政府欢迎民众提出意见, 他们可以电邮给州政府, 也可以通过媒体发表看法, 我们都乐意聆听 州法律顾问向槟州行政议会提呈建议, 在宪法第 7 条第 2 节增加条文, 即州议员不得受委首席部长超过两次, 州政府欢迎民众对此提出意见 如果民众反应正面, 那我们就可在 8 月召开的州议会提呈, 寻求通过, 反之, 会在 11 月或明年 5 月才提呈 曹观友说, 希盟开始时以 届 为限,1 届任期诠释最多 5 年, 两届即 10 年, 是以 1 届国会任期满届为算法 但国会却不一定满期方会解散 他举前首相拿督斯里纳吉为例子, 在其任相期间, 则几乎届满才解散, 进行选举 因此, 在几时开始方算 届满 或引起各方不同诠释 造成混淆下, 曹观友说州法律顾问便建议, 易 届 为 次, 即一名州议员一生只能受委两次 但他不讳言, 次 也有其争议, 即一旦有首长在任期内逝世或半路下车, 接任者或在很短时间内, 就完成一次任期, 就算下一次 ( 选举后 ) 再受委, 两次任期也可能只是 7 年 所以, 州政府期望能在提呈前集思广益, 公开上述建议予公众讨论, 听取各方意见, 或可再作修正 州政府重推先租后售政策曹观友 : 助低收入群一臂之力 槟州首席部长曹观友说, 由于州内仍有很多无壳一族无法获得银行贷款, 州政府将重新推行先租后售政策, 实现槟州百姓居者有其屋的需求 我们目前已鉴定在现有两三项进行中的州政府新房屋计划推行这项政策, 其中一项计划有可能落在威省麦曼珍, 但一切细节将由房屋局拟定 也是丹绒国会兼巴当哥打候任州议员的曹观友是在槟岛市长尤端祥及彭加兰哥打候任州议员魏子森 槟岛市议员王宇航等人的陪同下, 巡视阿贵街的市政厅组屋后, 如是表示 他认为社会住宅政策能助低收入群一臂之力, 让无法得到银行购屋贷款的他们, 以先租的方式, 待 20 至 25 年后, 租金转换成供期, 最后该住所才售予租户 曹观友也呼吁房屋发展商配合州政府的先租后售政策, 可将已建竣的廉价房屋计划以成本价售予州政府, 供先租后售用途, 造福无能力拥屋的低收入一族 曹观友到阿贵街市政厅组屋宣布槟市政厅计划明年将耗资 50 万令吉为该组屋更新屋顶计划, 随同的尚有魏子森 ( 左 1) 尤端祥 ( 右 1) 及王宇航 ( 右 2) 2008 年至今, 州政府已耗资 36 万令吉为阿贵街市政厅组屋油漆 更新电线及提升排水系统等, 图为该组屋外观

24 10 要闻 2018年6月16日 30日 1 绿色机构推陈出新 2 与首长慢跑捡垃圾 运动之余 槟州绿色机构为了配合世界环境日 World Environment Day 举办 与首长慢跑捡垃圾 以新的运动方式 传递环境保护意识 激发民众对环境清洁卫生自我责任的醒觉 也希望 慢跑捡垃圾 可以被公众推广为一项为环境志愿服务的新措施 3 慢跑捡垃圾第一场活动在威省 的诗布朗再也东姑花园展开 首 长曹观友 一众行政议员及候任 州议员 槟岛市长尤端祥及威省 市政局主席拿督罗查里等官员及 民众参与 他们人手一袋 一边慢 跑 沿路看到垃圾就捡起来放入 袋里 曹观友说 今年的世界环境日主 题 塑战速决 对槟州来说意 义非凡 鉴于世界环境日主题志 在抵御塑料污染 这项结合慢跑 以及捡垃圾的 慢跑捡垃圾 活 动则希望可以提高人民对环境的 意识 并引入这种及环保又健康 的新运动方式 也希望 慢跑捡 垃圾 可以被公众推广为一项为 环境志愿服务的新举措 槟州于2009年在所有商场和 超市推出 无免费塑料袋日 活 动 消费者每购买一个塑料袋需 付20仙 这20仙的收费则是通过 州政府的AES计划 经济平等议 程Agenda Ekonomi Saksama 消除贫穷率 在提高公众拥有正 确的废料管理和减少塑料的意 识上 征收塑料袋收费只是一个 小起步 之后 我们在2017年制定 了 每日无免费塑料袋 指南

Plogging refers to the act of jogging and picking up litter at the same time. It had its origin in Sweden in 2016 which later spread across the globe with the growing awareness and concern over plastic pollution. The Plogging with CM event was organised by Penang Green Council (PGC) and supported by Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) and Penang Forestry Department. The event was also held in conjunction with World Environment Day. Chow, who addressed the crowd and members of the media prior to the commencement of the plogging activity, BRACE yourself hikers! The Penang Hill Heritage Forest Challenge 2018 is featuring a longer route this year with avid hikers having to complete a 15.5km run compared to 14km last year. 42 16 June 16 30, 2018 Attract & Retain Women in the Workforce - A Labour Day Forum PWDC s Women s Economic Empowerment (WEE) has held a series of workshops on handicraft making at the state people s public housing at Desa Wawasan, Bukit Mertajam since April this year. The objective of these workshops is to train interested residents in craft making from recycled materials as a source of generating additional income. The community eco-craft workshops project is an initiative by the Penang Women s Development Corporation (PWDC) to empower women s participation in the economy in targeted areas. Earlier on 18 March, in conjunction with International Women s Day 2018, PWDC conducted a craft making demonstration workshop for residents of Desa Wawasan. The workshop received encouraging response from the community as those present exceeded the expected number of 100 participants. Participants were shown how handicrafts are made from recycled papers and packaging materials by experienced trainers. The handicraft products can be easily marketed and sold locally at craft shops, art & craft fairs and via online business platforms. PWDC received strong support from the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) in providing trainers for the 18 March eco-craft demonstration workshop and also during the 1st community eco-craft training workshop held on 21 April A total of 14 women participants attended the 1st workshop which was divided into 2 groups - paper craft group and tinfoil packaging craft group. Participants were taught how to create parts for the product during the first stage. For paper craft, they learned how to roll papers onto Lidi sticks for final assembly. The tinfoil packaging craft group learned how to cut, fold and make the assembly parts into the right sizes by using a template provided by the trainer. The 2nd community eco-craft workshop PWDC held the Attract & Retain Women in the Workforce forum, in conjunction with Labour Day at Auditorium F, Komtar on 30 April The forum attracted some 60 participants from the public sector, government linked companies, social enterprises and non-government organizations (NGOs). The forum was officially opened by YB Chong Eng, Exco for Women, Family, and Community Development as well as Chairperson of PWDC Board of Directors. Women face many challenges at the workplace like discrimination in terms of equal pay and company promotion YB Chong Eng stressed in her opening speech. She said the latest figures released by Department of Statistics, Malaysia, show female labour participation rate for 2017 stands at 54.7%, indicating there is vast potential to be tapped from non working women who are mainly homemakers. In Malaysia, women s labour force participation peaks between the ages of 25 and 29, which is at the age when women usually bear children. To achieve this end, the government needs to come up with a clear framework on how to retain women in the workforce by providing among others, flexible working hours and longer maternity leave as well as affordable and accessible childcare services. Their talks centered on their organization s policies, structure, practice and work environment relating to women in the workforce, and each panelist shared their organization s unique achievement and contribution in areas of women s welfare and benefits as well as their personal endeavour in advancing women s career progression. Participants who have joined the class since the beginning, successfully completed making a bag. At the 4th eco-craft workshop which was held on 3 June 2018, the paper craft class had a new participant who is a quick learner and was able to make a basket by the end of the class. For the tinfoil packaging group, again 2 participants successfully completed making a bag. To start the ball rolling in marketing their products, PWDC ordered 30 baskets for the E-Commerce Workshop in July with the aim of introducing the products made by the Desa Wawasan community to the workshop participants. Orders were also received from friends and neighbours. PWDC plans to further expand product marketing by placing an order for 440 bags and baskets for the Women in Economy Conference in September The objective of providing additional income generating opportunities for residents living in state housing projects, can be achieved by targeting the right market segments and using social media and online trading platforms to market the finished products, as shown by the progress made by Desa Wawasan community.

THE Bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Penang Rev Datuk Sebastian Francis requested for a piece of land in Batu Kawan from the state government to build a new church. I humbly request the state for land to build a church in Batu Kawan, where the story of the first arrivals of Chinese settlers from mainland China began, he said in his speech at the Parents Day fundraising dinner at the Church of the Holy Name of Mary in Permatang Tinggi on June 17. I would like to thank the donors who helped to build our new Church of the Holy Name of Mary and the parish centre in Permatang Tinggi. We will keep the old beautiful iconic church which is of heritage value for our future generation. Our records tell us that the first baptism recorded in this church was on Sept 10, 1893, Bishop Sebastian said. He said that the fundraising effort managed to raise RM2.1 million so far. It is understood that the church needs RM6 million for the project. FIABCI raises concerns to Chief Minister THE Penang government will be reviewing the issues brought up by the International Real Estate Federation (FIABCI) Penang branch. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state would followup on the seven issues raised by the federation and would assist the federation whenever possible. FIABCI Malaysia vice-chairman Michael Geh, the branch adviser Datuk Seri Khor Teng Tong and several other representatives paid a courtesy call on Chow on June 18 at his office in Komtar. Ong Pix by Noor Siti Nabilah Noorazis THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated RM12 million for the ongoing upgrading works at the City Stadium in preparation for the Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG). MBPP mayor Yew Tung Seang said the allocation was for the relaying of a brand new synthetic track and fixing of extra bucket seats. The track was badly damaged by the November floods last year. A new one will be ready in time for the opening ceremony on Sept 8, Yew told a press conference at the City Stadium after a site visit on June 20. We ve also put up 5,618 extra bucket seats, enlarging the seating capacity of the stadium to 20,000. I am quite happy with the progress of the upgrading works. It s almost 90% complete. And I have instructed my engineers to see if the consultants and contractors can expedite it so that the works can be completed in August. We need to do some testing. We will monitor the upgrading works closely as this is like an Olympic-sanctioned Games and the first of its kind in Asia. All eyes on Prince of Wales Isle Xokei Club The registration of the Prince of Wales Isle Xokei Club for the coming Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG) to be held in Penang on Sept 7-16 has piqued the curiosity of hockey fans. One could be forgiven for mistaking that the team is representing the Prince of Wales Island International School (POWIIS) that was established in Balik Pulau in 2011 or a foreign team representing a hockey club from Wales. The Prince of Wales Isle Xokei Club is actually the brainchild of former state player, N. Dharmasegaran, who founded it in November When Francis Light founded Penang in 1786, he named it the Prince of Wales Isle. That s why we used this name, Dharmasegaran explained. The name hockey derives from a Greek word, xokei. There was a game of sticks and ball and they used to call it xokei. Since this was the first name given, we borrowed that name. Penang, which will play APMG hosts for the first time, is targeting 5,000 participants from 34 countries for the games that will have 22 events. The team also includes Hardeep Singh, a former Westland Secondary School star forward, and who has returned to Penang after spending over 20 years in the United States. Chandrasegaran, an administrative officer with the Enforcement Department of the Penang Island City Council, had coached the Jelutong Secondary School Under-18 girls team to victory in the Penang Schools championships in the 80s and 90s. Dharma, who had captained the Penang Sports Club (PSC) hockey team for many years, said one of the reasons he formed the Prince of Wales Isle Xokei Club for players over 50 was because PSC does not allow outsiders to play for the club. Dharma s club soon attracted players who are over 40 and over 60, as well as women players and juniors. The club, which has 34 members, eight women associate members and 60 juniors, will hold its fourth hockey carnival on Oct 20 at the PSC. We participate in a lot of tournaments around the country, from Sabah and Sarawak right down to Johor. There are a lot of veteran teams. ATAP chairman Ch ng Huck Theng, in his speech, paid tribute to both men one who will be playing and another who played an important role and responsibility for the growth of tourism in Penang, an important sector in the economy of the state. Batu Lancang assemblymember Ong Ah Teong said these houses were badly damaged in a fire recently and the owners of the properties could not be traced. Due to the heavy traffic and the narrow road junction, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has decided to acquire the two lots to widen the road junction. Currently, the existing road only enables light vehicles to make a U-turn from Jalan Jelutong to Jalan Perak. The council is planning to acquire the land to widen the road so that more vehicles, including heavy ones, are able to make the U-turn as well.
