The only issue now (to be sorted out) is that the contractor was directly appointed by the previous administration and not by open tender. As the new Pakatan Harapan federal government emphasises a lot on accountability and transparency, a decision has been made that an open tender will be held (to select the contractor) to continue the project. I have no problem with that, said Jagdeep, who s also Datok Keramat assemblymember, one of the most flood prone areas in the state. At least a commitment has been made by the federal government that this project will carry on. I, on behalf of the people of Penang and especially the residents of Datok Keramat, am very thankful that this (flood mitigation project) will be done. I thank the efforts by the existing federal government for this. The finance minister had indicated that work on the project might start as soon as early next year. Of course, my only wish is for the work to be expedited and to be completed as soon as possible. I also need to mention that the state government had taken precautionary steps as long-term and short-term initiatives for the alleviation of flood woes. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow during the launch of the festival shared the importance of appreciating the beauty of Penang Hill. We hope this festival can be held yearly not just to attract tourists but also Penangites. We are more interested to attract the locals and to encourage them to become part of Penang Hill and appreciate its beauty, Chow said at the launch of the festival. The 130-million-year old forest hill is just 10 minutes from George Chow signing on the board designated to get signatures of support for the nomination of Penang Hill as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve. Speaking to the media about the nomination, PHC general manager Cheok Lay Leng said they are in top gear preparing for the nomination. We started work regarding the nomination of Penang Hill as a Unesco Biosphere Reserve two years ago The work was interrupted due to the landslides that occurred during the Nov 4 & 5 floods. Now we have expedited our work and we are trying to submit it by Sept 30 which is the deadline, said Cheok.

The forum was organised by the Penang Youth Development Corporation to prepare them to contribute towards making Penang a smart city. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow who attended the forum stated that Penang has started to embark on the journey to transform into a smarter city. It was the vision of former Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to make Penang an intelligent and international city. Being a smart city is a prerequisite to achieve this. And now, it s time for Penang to step forward and develop into an intelligent city. According to the Chief Minister, adding the element of the arts to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) will be a powerful combination. Kiwanis Club of Penang Central aims to serve the community in general with a focus more on children and youth with special needs. Datuk Seri Wong Siew Hai was installed as the charter president, followed by Lee Ean Hong as the president-elect, Goh Theng Lai (vice-president), See Swee Sie (secretary), Foong Wei Fong (treasurer) and Datuk Dennis Chuah, Gina Tang Choon Heok, Tan Thean Jin and Yvon Lim Siew Imm as the directors. Chong Eng, in her speech, stated that Kiwanis Penang Central practises gender inclusiveness with its core committee achieving more than 30% women participation. PITE is a homegrown premier travel exchange, targeted to further position Penang as the leading Business Events and leisure destination in Asia Pacific. PITE will include Business to Business (B2B) sessions, site inspections, education workshops and networking events. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Penang would be hosting buyers from the Global Panoramic Showcase (GPS) in this first edition of PITE. GPS is a business meeting point for tourism professionals from the leading tourism service providers in India. This is a continuation from Chow (centre), Yeoh (left) and Ashwin at the event. the highly successful India Roadshow that PCEB and Team Penang embarked on in January this year. The Penang Sales Mission to India covered four cities Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Penang received about RM1.03 million in media exposure during the Sales Mission, he told a press conference at his office in Komtar on July 26. During the Penang Alumni Badminton Championship gathering dinner at the Majestic Theatre on July 28, former state player and coach Khoo Kay Choo was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Chung Hwa School Union. Khoo, who received the award from Soon at the grand dinner, has contributed immensely towards badminton development in the state. He represented Chung Hwa Confucian High School ( ), the state team in the Foong Seong Cup ( ) and Malaysia in the International School Boys Championship in After his studies, he joined Tenaga Nasional as a junior technician and represented his employer together with formidable players like Tan Yee Khan, Ng Boon Bee and the late Datuk Punch Gunalan. He was also the sparring partner for Tan Aik Huang when the latter won the All- England singles title in Khoo, 77, also has the distinction of being the longest serving coach for the Penang state team from 1975 to One of his greatest achievements was when he was awarded the BWF Meritorious Service Award in He also coached the Malaysia back-up squad to China in 1983 and the Malaysia Badminton Deaf Team to Taipei in 2000 and I feel honoured to be accorded this certificate. It is worth all the effort to spend most of my life in badminton as a player and coach, Khoo said as his wife, Ch ng Cheng Hong, 76, proudly looked on. 6 6 August 1 15, 2018 New Malaysian envoy to Sri Lanka calls on CM CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow was kept busy as he welcomed various visitors who made courtesy calls on him recently. On July 27, newly-appointed Malaysian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Tan Yang Thai met Chow and conveyed his desire to forge closer ties between the two nations. Sri Lanka after the civil war has now started to rebuild itself. I hope that there will be more interaction between Sri Lanka and Penang. I think Sri Lanka is a familiar place to Malaysians as there are quite a number of Malaysians who have ancestral origins from Sri Lanka, said Tan, who left for Sri Lanka on Aug 2 to take office as the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka. We are one of the biggest investors in Sri Lanka, with Axiata being there since the early 1990s. Apart from that, we also have resorts, hotels and manufacturing companies in Sri Lanka. A pharmaceutical company is also in the process of setting up a plant there, added Tan. Apart from that, Tan said that some 40,000 Sri Lankans visited Malaysia last year. On July 26, a 11-member delegation representing various arts groups visited Chow at his office in Komtar. Ombak-Ombak ARTStudio president Prof Dr Tan Sooi Beng said there was a need to set up an Arts Council to coordinate, promote, network, research and to find ways to overcome hurdles related to arts in Penang. We need a systematic dissemination of information and coordination of arts activities. Smaller arts groups also need support and funding for their projects, she said in the meeting with Chow. The proposed name given by the groups was Harapan Arts Council. Chow told the representatives that the state would have to study the proposal and would continue to converse with the groups until the Arts Council is formed. On July 25, Chow met a delegation from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Penang regional office and its agencies. In his speech, Chow urged state agencies to explore the possibilities of collaboration with federal government agencies and grow together. Video games? esports? The electronic sports (also knowns as esports) industry is a fast-growing industry and a global phenomenon. It has drawn the interest of more than 270 million fans worldwide and is touted to be the fastest growing form of entertainment in the world. Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) chief executive officer Teng Kok Liang said the esports industry is not all about playing video games. The industry is huge and can offer various career opportunities to those who are willing to venture into it. You can be a gamer, coach, competition organiser, technical specialist, network or brand specialist, and more. For us, it is a platform to engage the youths, Teng said in an interview in Komtar recently. Teng said PYDC was hoping to reach out to the younger generation through esports. We support esports competitions in Penang, we conduct outreach programmes, and we have public-private partnerships with industry players to raise awareness on esports. The support from the public is growing but the esports community in Penang is rather small when compared to Kuala Lumpur. We can t deny that most educators and parents are sceptical of the industry. We faced challenges when we try to approach schools due to the unpleasant labels of esports. esports athletes or gamers are often labeled as antisocial, he said, adding that a positive approach is needed to counter the negative perception of esports. Teng said an esports athlete needs to have discipline. Besides that, the athlete requires a sharp mind, good coordination skills, and be able to communicate well with his team, he said. Teng said the Penang government had allocated RM1 million to PYDC to help develop esports in the state. Mobile app, companion book to enhance experience of Penang Hill visitors VISITORS to Penang Hill will now be able to view the points of interest on the hill and to provide feedbacks to the Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) more effectively with the Penang Hill Mobile Guide. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Hill Mobile Guide is a mobile application that would connect its users and further enhances the experience of Penang Hill visitors. The new mobile guide also has a photo taking feature with GPS technology, to enable quick identification of the location where the photo was taken. Photos taken will be stored in the Mobile Guide (offline mode) when mobile data is not available. The photos will be sent once the mobile data network on the user s mobile phone is available, Chow told a press conference at his office in Komtar on July 26. PHC general manager Cheok Lay Leng said another interesting feature, the Hiking Trail (using Open Street Map), has also been incorporated in the mobile guide. Popular hiking trails are linked to the Open Street Map, so hikers can refer to the map when they hike up Penang Hill. Hikers and cycling communities can also upload any additional trails and information through the Open Street Map, he said. The mobile guide can be downloaded from the Google Play Store (for Android devices) and the App Store (for IOS devices). Also launched is the Penang Hill Nature Trail Companion Book. Chow said the companion book served as a great guide for children and families to learn about the flora and fauna on Penang Hill. There are also coloured maps and illustrations, showing the landmarks and nature trails of Penang Hill, Chow said. Cheok said the initial development and print were funded by PHC. 8 8 August 1 15, 2018 CM s vision for Penang CHIEF Minister Chow Kon Yeow conveyed his vision for Penang during a forum titled The Future of Penang after GE 14 on July 22. The forum was moderated by Starproperty Sdn Bhd general manager Ernest Bernard Towle where Chow was one of the panelists. Other panelists were Universiti Sains Malaysia s Prof Dr Nor Aini Yusof and Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia (Rehda) Penang chairman Datuk Toh Chin Leong. The Chief Minister pointed out the urgency of expanding the Penang International Airport which has surpassed its capacity of a maximum of 6.5 million passengers per year. One of the most important elements to ensure that Penang continues to grow in the manufacturing, services and medical sectors is we need to have good airline connectivity. The PIA has surpassed its capacity to some 7.5 million passengers per year. So, the airport needs to be expanded urgently by maximising the land surrounding it, said Chow. Secondly, the infrastructure needs of Penang which is deemed to be important must be met. We need to upscale our infrastructure to support the continuous economic growth of Penang. Chow also opined that Penang should become the international hub for not just for the northern region. Penang needs to go beyond being the hub for the northern region. We should be able to become an international hub for countries surrounding us such as Vietnam, Indonesia, India, The Philippines and Hong Kong, added Chow who aspires Penang to become an international and smart city. Answering the media regarding the provision of affordable housing, Chow said the state government is taking steps to introduce rent and own policies for Penangites from the low-income group. We believe that it s important for our people to have a roof over them. So we are looking into introducing rent and own policies for our people here. The federal government has some plans to build housing for Penangites but it s not on the ground yet. We hope it will be expedited, said Chow. Apart from this, the Chief Minister also emphasised the need to ensure development is not carried out at the expense of the environment. It is essential to take into account the aspect of environment when we have development, he said while stating that the authenticity of Penang will be retained despite the bid to transform it. Young technopreneurs show off business skills It is crucial for our young to be technology savvy as they face the emerging age of technological advancements and the growth of IoT (Internet of Things). Tech Dome Penang chief executive officer Dr Khong Yoon Loong said the roadshows were aimed at helping students to grow their interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). We are collaborating with three shopping malls Gurney Paragon Mall, Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall to bring these exciting roadshows to the people. We want to engage the mall visitors and expose them to science activities. It is important for us to grow their interest (especially the young) with regards to science. Charity run to raise funds for needy heart patients PENANG Adventist Hospital is organising the Charity Red Socks Run on Sept 23 in-conjunction with World Heart Day Its chief executive officer, Ronald Koh, said the run encourages the public to pull up their socks and get fit. Participants will also be contributing to the hospital s Patient Heart Fund when they take part in the run, he said during the launch at the hospital on July 26. 10 10 August 1 15, 2018 Nasi kandar outlets ordered to close for two weeks TWO nasi kandar eateries at Gat Lebuh Macallum were ordered to close for two weeks in the Operasi Bersih conducted by health officers from Penang Island City Council (MBPP) and the state Health Department on July 24. Rat droppings were found in these two outlets where some 13 notices amounting to a compound of RM3,250 were issued. The operation was conducted by 10 health officers from MBPP and five from the state Health Department. MBPP Licensing director Azman Surin said the standard of hygiene of these two outlets was below the safety level, hence the closure order. The main purpose of our operation is to ensure that food premises in Penang are clean and safe for consumers in accordance with the safety standards set by the Health Ministry. So, today we have conducted our inspection at two food premises and found that they are below the safe level, THE Penang Island City Council (MBPP) will not allow the slaughtering of chickens in wet markets to ensure the premises are hygienic. MBPP mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang said the slaughtering of chickens would be held only at centres in the mainland and then the dressed chicken would be sent over to a distribution centre near the Batu Lancang market on the island. We don t allow the slaughtering of chickens but it is still happening. We provide an alternative solution first. We want Penang to become a cleaner city, said Yew after chairing a full council meeting at City Hall on July 26. Yew said 18 markets on the island would have to abide by the ruling that would be strictly enforced from next year. 15 2018年8月1日 15日 珍珠快讯 免费 {带着槟民心声进国会 } 启动交通大蓝图轻快铁工程 曹观友拟向中央申请10亿贷款 槟州首席部长兼丹绒区国会议员曹观友 带着槟州人民的心声 在国会下议院参与元首施政演辞辩论 积极反映槟州交通及机场扩建课题 寻求提升交通和机场 为未来奠下坚实基础 首长拟向联邦政府提出10亿令吉过渡贷款申请 以同步启动第一泛 槟岛大道和乔治市衔接峇六拜的轻快铁工程 槟城的交通阻塞问题 特别是节庆期间的交通阻塞日益严重已是 不得不正视的问题 槟州政府经已推出了早前饱受抨击的槟城交通 大蓝图(PTMP) 尽管如此 州政府相信 槟城交通大蓝图是解决当前 交通阻塞的主要方案 并能够满足未来50年 2015年至2065年 对公 共交通及公路容量的要求 槟城交通大蓝图被视为开启经济 吸引 游客及提升槟城成为宜居城的钥匙 州政府相信槟城交通大蓝图可 以改变现有的交通景观 进而改善州内道连贯性及网络 类似的规划计划 不只需要更廉宜及快速 但是更重要的是可信 赖 永续性及可行性 我希望槟州交通大蓝图的执行可获得正视 以 便其各项计划得以顺利及完整地展开 我也希望我们所申请的贷款 可以获得批准 也希望联邦政府能够支持及与我们合作 以建立公 共交通网 提升州内的联系网络 促进州内的公交可达性 以达到减 轻交通阻塞的目标 鼓励更强稳及持续性的经济成长 虽然我们知道联邦政府目前因债务高筑 而面对财困问题 但是 政府有意向联邦政府申请10亿令吉的过渡贷款 以支付槟州交通大 蓝图内的两项主要工程 即从乔治市至峇六拜的轻快铁 以及从新 关仔角至峇六拜国际机场的第一泛岛大道计划 冀海底隧道计划获批 除上述两项计划 我也希望各主要要道及过去曾被热议的海底隧 道计划 能尽速获得联邦政府单位批准 以便工程得以最快速度展 开 我也希望联邦政府能够重新检讨渡轮的服务 并考虑在最近的将 来落实早前有建议的水上德士计划 州政府很乐意分享我们早前已 经做好的水上公共交通服务的可行性报告 为了解决槟州峇六拜国际机场不敷应用问题 交通部拟定短期及长 期计划以提升及扩建机场 另外 曹观友也在国会询问扩建槟国际机场以容纳1200万乘客人次 的计划几时开始 所花费用 以及扩建是否需要征用土地 交通部予曹观友书面回答 表示拟定短期及长期计划 根据交通部 的书面回答 短期计划是交通部通过大马机场控股公司 Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad 进行终站扩建 以减低繁忙时刻的乘客 负荷量 预料可在2019年第2季完工 工程包括整顿各航空公司登记 柜台 移民局柜台 行李领取处设施等 目前 大马机场控股公司正准备招标文件以遴选承包商 预料工 程需费时5个月 即2019年2月完成 长期计划方面 大马机场控股公司准备把机场扩建从目前的容纳 650万人次流量 提升至容纳1200万人次流量 该公司正进行公开招 标遴选承包商 整个计划的费用需遴选的承包商估计 另外 扩建计划无需征用 土地 因为现有的土地已足应付 曹观友表示欢迎交通部扩建槟城机场 因为机场已急需扩建才能 应付日益增加的人流量 我希望槟州政府与联邦政府可以联手合 作 早日完成扩建计划

16 2 要闻 2018 年 8 月 1 日 15 日 珍珠快讯 28 楼正式迈入新 曹 代之后, 我逐渐发现到, 虽然曹首长给人的感觉是不太爱说话, 但是遇到对 tune 的课题, 他可是能够滔滔不绝地说得忘我呢 有一次, 一位同事在修改记者会需要使用的资料后, 没有再三详细查阅就打印给首长过目, 结果, 曹首长眼尾一扫, 就发现号码的次序跳了, 从 3 号直接跳到 5 号 ( 因为第 4 号的重点, 首长要求删掉 ), 就问我们怎么可以看漏, 虽然只是很小的失误 接着, 他开始讲故事了 你知道的咯, 以前我做过 Echo( 当时的英文报 ) 那个时候啊, 什么都要 包, 累积下来的经验, 我眼睛只要一扫 ( 到任何文章 ), 就可以扫到不对的地方 以前啊, 我们连校对 ( 的工 ) 也要做, 不像现在 他说, 以前的稿是用手写在纸上, 而出版的报纸, 则是打字后排版才出街的, 排版的设计, 与你手中拿着的那一份原稿, 不论是次序 方向, 都是完全不同的 他回忆说, 那个时候, 尽管排版设计 排位 方向不同, 但是工作的人都有本事对着两篇完全不一样稿校对, 很快可以校对完每一篇, 并确保即将刊登出来的内容, 是与原稿是一样的 总之, 曹观友的结论是, 过去不管做过什么样的行业 涉及什么领域, 只要你在当下很用心去完成当时的任务, 累积下来的每一个小细节, 都会成为未来对你有用的工具 另一次, 在 马新社 独家专访完毕后, 闲聊期间, 新闻主任就谈起曹观友如何从记者成为首席部长的心路历程 尽管有另一个会议在等着他, 但是只见曹观友指着对方, 说, 我看你也差不多跟我同年龄吧 以前我当林吉祥的政治秘书时, 文告是用手交 (Hand delivery) 到每一间报馆的 你有印象吗? 从手交, 到后来的传真, 再到电邮, 到今天的连手机应用程序也可以发文告了 接着, 他还示范那个年代的复印机, 需要用手去滚动, 搅一次才印一张出来, 要等它干, 然后好好收着, 再一间一间报馆去派 哪里像现在, 手指一个 Click, 透过 Whatapps 新闻就传出去了 他还指着年龄相若的摄影记者, 问 : 你说你说, 以前你怎样传照片的? 我是指发生重大事件的时候 对方腼腆地说, 我们把拍好照片的菲林, 透过飞机 德士, 或者是巴士, 从槟城运到吉隆坡咯 然后, 那边的同事就会在巴士站 机场或者是德士站接菲林, 然后飞车回报馆, 再处理成新闻照 曹观友说, 以前的报纸, 照片都是模糊的一块, 人影也是黑黑的, 为什么呢? 因为要赶时间上报纸, 所以在当地冲洗了出来之后, 透过传真机, 传真去报馆, 就这样出版了 哪里像现在, 新闻还没有出街, 照片已经在网上传到乱了 以前一个远方的新闻, 我们最快要 3 天才知道, 现在不到几秒就知道了 你慢一点回应已经被炒到不能停了 他坦诚, 虽然只是当过很短时间的记者, 但是那段回忆却是可以让他讲很多故事 因此, 他也很认真地勉励现场的记者, 只要有心, 也可以和他一样, 从记者做到首席部长去 这就是冷笑话天王讲故事时最精彩的地方, 冷到 ~~ 于是, 我快快告诉曹首长, 下一个会议的出席者, 已经在隔壁的会议室等着了, 不好迟到

40 August 1 15, Quick aid for fire victims AIR Itam assemblymember Joseph Ng made a swift move to arrange a People s Housing Project (PPR) unit in Sungai Pinang for the victims of the recent fire at Kampung Melayu Makam Che Omar. In the incident on July 18, the family of Rosni Mohamed Pakiry lost their home after the fire broke out. No injuries were reported and the victims have been provided temporary shelter at Dewan Rukun Tetangga Kampung Melayu. A special allocation from the TYT s Disaster Relief Fund was also handed over to the family on July 19. A total of RM3,000 was allocated by the Penang Governor from the TYT s Disaster Relief Fund for the family and today we have handed over RM1,000 to them which was received by Rosni. The balance (RM2,000) will be banked in for them. Apart from that, we have also arranged for a PPR unit in Sungai Pinang for the family to stay in. After the family has submitted the relevant documents with regards to the Sungai Pinang PPR unit, they can move there, said Ng during a press conference held at Dewan Rukun Tetangga Kampung Melayu. The state Social Welfare Department also contributed RM500 together with some basic necessities to the family. Recycling best way to promote waste segregation THE concept of recycling is the best approach to promote waste segregation, says Penang Island Municipal Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang. This mindset will reduce the amount of waste to be disposed, Yew said when launching the waste segregation at source programme and safety campaign at SMJK(C) Sacred Heart in Balik Pulau on July 23. He added that for the first five months of 2018, some 98,425 metric tons of waste from Penang island was disposed of at Pulau Burong waste disposal site. This is equivalent to 651 metric tons of waste per day, he said, stressing that the rate of recycling till May this year is about 30.22%. The reduction in waste disposal will enable MBPP to save around RM2.2 million as tipping fee for the waste disposal site. Yew hopes the recycling rate will continue to increase yearly to give a positive impact to the environment. This will also help the state government to reduce the need to find a new waste disposal site in future, he said. Since 2011, MBPP had launched many activities and competitions together with schools, among them being the Green School Award, Reduce Use of Plastic Bags and others. 41 August 1 15, RM1b soft loan to expedite PTMP Story by Danny Ooi & Victor Seow THE RM1 billion soft loan which Penang hopes to obtain from the federal government is an alternative package to expedite the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). The RM1 billion soft loan idea came from SRS Consortium (the project delivery partner for PTMP) following the changed political environment and the fact that the state wanted the projects to be completed earlier as they are financed through land reclamation, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow told the media on July 25. To make available the land, it will take up to two to three years the earliest before the land can be put up for sale and generate revenue. With that in mind, only one project can be carried out at a time and most likely, it will be the LRT. But with the soft loan of RM1 billion, SRS will be able to call for tenders for two projects simultaneously the LRT and also the PIL Phase 1, he added. It is because of the intention for an earlier completion that this request was made following the change of government at the federal level. Before this, of course this did not arise at all. Ultimately, the state is the owner of these projects and any savings would go back to the people of Penang. It is an alternative from several options, added Chow. He added that if earth works could be carried out as scheduled in early 2019, all component projects under PTMP will be completed in 10 years time. Earlier on July 22, Chow said the state government hopes to get a RM1 billion soft loan from the federal government to finance preliminary works and two important components under the PTMP. Chow said his intention is to carry out the Light Railway Transit (LRT) George Town to Bayan Lepas project together with Penang Island Link 1 (PIL 1) from Penang Hill to Paya Terubong and Sungai Ara simultaneously, expected to start next year, after fulfilling all requirements from federal agencies. After GE14, considering the state government needs to carry out projects at the same time, Project Delivery Partner SRS Consortium advised that if an earlier soft loan of RM1 billion is available, both components of LRT and PIL 1 can start concurrently. If not, the PDP can only carry them out one after another, with each project taking five to six years to complete. Hill s healing process recorded for posterity THE healing process of Penang Hill after the Nov 4 & 5 storm last year is now recorded in print for posterity in the form of a pictorial book Healing Penang Hill which was launched on July 28 by Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng at a ceremony which took place at none other than Penang Hill itself. The ceremony, which began after Lim and his entourage completed the Moniot Trail in almost two hours, was marked with commemoration and presentation of a copy of Healing Penang Hill each to all parties who did their part to rejuvenate Penang Hill in her bleakest hour. The recipients included representatives of the Penang Hill Residents Association, Public Works Department, Malaysia Civil Defense Department, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), State Department of Social Welfare, Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), Air Putih Service Centre and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). This pictorial book has captured the aftermath with photographs of the landslide incidents due to the extreme weather conditions back in November 2017 and the restoration as well as the rehabilitation activities which took place during that period. It is also to record Penang Hill Corporation s appreciation for all the parties who came forward to provide assistance during the emergency recovery and the process restoration, Lim said in his speech. Anyone who remembers the severity of the landslide incident on Nov 5, 2017, would have been caught by surprise to know that Penang Hill was reopened within two months. Healing Penang Hill after at least 319 landslides was definitely not an easy task. Many expected a minimum of two to three years but through our dedication, we did it in less than two months! he added. Ong IT was a big loss for Penang when their former state hockey coach Rajendran Balagurusamy, better known as Uncle Bob, passed away on July 25 Rajendran, 69, succumbed to soft tissue cancer that he was diagnosed with about 15 months ago. The news of Rajendran s death saddened many hearts, especially with his great contribution to the state and nation in the field of sports. The Penang State Hockey Association (PSHA) and former hockey players held a testimonial match for him on July 14, followed by a charity dinner to help raise funds for him as he sought medical treatment. State Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, who attended the dinner and also presented a cheque to Rajendran, said he appreciated his services especially in grooming many young hockey players, a number of whom went on to become national players. There is no doubt he was a dedicated sportsman and coach. It s definitely a great loss to Penang, said Soon. PSHA secretary V. Jayanandhan said many people know about Rajendran s contributions to hockey but a lot do not know that Bob also excelled in football and rugby. He represented Penang in hockey, football and rugby. In the late 60s, he was in the state football team under coach Datuk M. Kuppan, said Jayanandhan. When many of his former players got wind that he was ill, hundreds came to visit him in the last two to three months. When he was coaching them, he worried about their studies. One of his greatest disappointments in hockey was that after seven months of rigorous training for the Munich Olympics, he was dropped from the team. But in later years, Rajendran found great satisfaction in guiding players of all races since 1979, treating them as my own children. Rajendran left behind wife Catherine Lim, a retired MBPP staff member who was active in netball, and son, Vikneshwaran. them on the matter, he said. Construction of this iconic 88,000 sq ft landmark, the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, is targeted to begin in December and is expected to be completed in three years. IJM Land Berhad managing director Edward Chong said its subsidiary, Jelutong Development Sdn Bhd, and Space Arts and Culture (M) Sdn Bhd would be collaborating to invest and build the art gallery, with a budgeted cost of about RM88 million. According to the Chinese cultural belief, a turtle signifies longevity, kindness and prosperity. As such we believe that good tidings will continue to come and Penang and Malaysia will continue to prosper, he said. The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery will be built on a 0.89 acre freehold site within The Light Waterfront development in Gelugor, he said in his speech. Commending Space Arts and Culture executive chairman Prof Lin Xiang Xiong, Chong said the company was honoured and excited to be collaborating with Lin who is a world-renowned artist and an entrepreneur. Prof Lin is from the Guangdong province in China. The same act of picking up waste and litter on the floor was performed by the VVIPS led by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The act was done after the chief minister and his entourage visited the stalls that were set up for the occasion. Earlier on, Chow, in his speech, highlighted the importance of such festive occasions in Penang which serve as bridges in forging closer ties with different nations. The state government understands the importance of developing relationships and building a bridge of understanding between nations in this era of globalization, he said. THE screening of the Hindi movie Taare Zameen Par at the banquet hall of The Top on July 27 opened the eyes and minds of the more than 400 people who turned up on the plight of children with special needs and, in particular, dyslexia. Lasting almost 2 hours and 45 minutes with subtitles in English and Chinese, the message delivered by the movie was that every child is special in his or her own way despite certain perceived setbacks which impede success in the rat race of life. Organised by the office of Sungai Pinang assemblymember Lim Siew Khim, many of those who attended the movie screening were teachers, parents of special children and the guest of honour for the event was Tan Lean Kee, who s the wife of Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Lim, in her welcoming speech, highlighted the priceless bond between a child and a mother and that in the eyes of the parents, perfection is the epitome of parental love for their children. Such a bond between a mother and her child cannot be described by words but can only be felt in the heart. Likewise, our children with their traits be it one with hidden talents or one who is special is to his or her parents, a perfect gem like an unblemished jewel, said Lim. The state government is aware of the soft property market and has agreed to the request from Rehda to waive the 1.5% levy for foreign purchasers and the waiver of 2% levy on sub sales within three years of purchase, Chow said. This special waiver by the state government is only for properties promoted in this MAPEX 2018 fair, he added.
