2 1 2 3 4 3 Study on "A Classified and Annotated Bibliography of Books of Calligraphy and Painting Abstract Yu Shaosong (1883-1949) was a famous scholar and artist during the Republic of China (1912-1949). His representative work "A classified and Annotated Bibliography of books on calligraphy and painting" (1932) ( ) was the first specialized one in the bibliographical history, it also
started systematic classification and textual research of its kind. But so far the masterpiece hasn't been comprehensively studied further in academic circles. For this reason, we first synthesize Yu's other books, academic diaries and relevant data and then make researches on this book on the basis of reading proofs. In the introduction, we give a brief account of Yu's life and the significance of the subject. The dissertation falls into following five parts. 1. Compiling Procedure For a long time the book was beyond contemporary academic sphere because of the absence of documentary. As a matter of fact it was not only the outcome of Artistic Revolution and Arranging Ancient Books Trend but also quintessence of his art teaching, researching and creation. 2. Academic Thought Firstly, it improved the awkward position of ancient books on painting and calligraphy by means of bibliography and classic textual research. Secondly, it collected scattered books and put them in order. Thirdly, it made thorough arrangement and research on these books with scientific reason, and lastly came to the view of its criticism. 3. Bibliographic achievement In this part, we analyze its bibliographic achievements such as listing, classifying, differentiating, etc. From this we can clearly see that the book was the epitome of classical bibliography and a precedent of specialized bibliography of books on painting and calligraphy as well. Yu Shaosong deserved a bibliographer. 4. Limitations and Faults. It involves four aspects. (1) Wrongly recorded (2) inappropriate classification (3) faults of textual research (4) drawback of compiling. In each section, some detailed and instances are given. 5. Values and Influence The book has a high value of art and bibliography. It exerted important influence on artistic bibliography. Later some books of this kind come into beings. But there existed certain faults. In the end, we make comments on the development of bibliography on painting and calligraphy.
