The Application of Chinese Paper Cutting Patterns to Bag,Costume Designs and oilpaper umbrella TSAI,Yi-lun LIN,Yu-wen Abstract Using bags and costumes is regarded as the extension of human body, and the oilpaper umbrellas which was a necessity of life in early days also has graceful appearance and unvarnished tender quality feeling. Through the paper cutting skill performing with fabrics, local decorative designs were made for bags, costumes and oilpaper umbrella to integrate this traditional figuration and skill into the modern age of science and technology and to develop an innovative designing style with traditional beauty. This thesis was divided into two parts (the literature review and the designing): i. Based on the national culture and the local art, this part made use of the intagliated paper cutting skill to make B1-1
symmetrical cutting patterns with various materials for visual designing; ii. This part combined costumes, bags and oilpaper umbrellas with the traditional art so that the old impression which applied paper cutting to traditional folk adornments was broken and the new impression arose with diversified arranging methods to improve the use-values of paper cuttings. Based on Chinese paper cutting skills, this thesis got important results: the analysis of regional relations revealed that the south china and the north china and each chinese dynasty cultivated different designing styles because of their different landscapes and cultures; the analysis of the diversification of the paper cutting design revealed different materials being used modern age the plane paper cutting design could show the feathers of the age properly through rearrangement and designing; the application of this skill to bag, costume and oilpaper umbrella designs could convert the paper cutting skill with the intact decorative beauty into the additional values of costumes and bags and produce various views and testes. This would be an important exploration to find out the future of traditional subjects and to create new expressions for the current design.
