36 The study of monks vow-breaking stories in Ming short novels Shan-Wen Lin General Educational Center, De- Lin Institute of Technology Abstract There were many stories concerning Buddist rules of conduct in Ming short novels. They indicated how monks broke their vows in drinking, adultery, meat-eating, stealing, killing and boasting. Those vow-breaking stories can be further categorized into six common types including Stories of drinking and meat-eating, Stories of adultery, Stories of greed, Stories of anger, Stories of killing and Stories of boasting. They not only showed the profit-seeking and lust-satisfying trend reflected in the middle of Ming Dynasty, but also presented people s highly evaluative standard as revealed by critical and sarcastic attitude toward ascetics in the society. Furthermore, the novels about entertainment were repeatedly written of similar topics or using exaggerative technique in order to shock the world or challenge taboos. The monk s vow-breaking stories indeed followed the decorative feature shown in Ming novels while demonstrated excessive and dramatic effects created by the cultivated.
