Some plants contain pigments which change colour when mixed with acids or alkalis. These plant pigments can be used as natural indicators to test for acids or alkalis. In the 17 th century, an Irish scientist, Robert Boyle succeeded in preparing indicators from different types of plants. Red cabbage leaves, Hibiscus petals, strawberries, blueberries and red roses can be used as natural indicators.
