The Study of Fifth-Grade Students Performance to the Learning of Plane Figures Abstract The purpose of this research was to study the fifth-grade students performance and misconception to the learning of plane figures. The study was by investigation approach, using writing test, practical operation and individual interview to collect the data of the research. The total writing test samples were 337 students from 10 classes of five elementary schools that were in Taichung County, Taichung City, Chang-Hua County and Nan-Tou County. The effective writing test samples were 334. Both writing test and practical operation individual interview samples were 30 students from writing test samples of two schools in Taichung County. They included high, medium and low accomplishments separately. The data analysis results are as follows: 1. The aspect on recognizing plane figures: There were about two-third fifth-grade students had been stable in the cognition of Euclid geometrical phase, but one-third students were not stable yet, they were easy to neglect the closed figures and the characteristic of angles or were affected by positions and the direct illusion. 2. The aspect in plane figures composite elements: The fifth-grade students mostly understood the composite elements of triangles, quadrangles and circles, but a lot of students were confused with the figure of an angle and angular degrees. 3. The aspect on realizing the similarities and differences between two figures: 1 According to the performance on identifying triangles through words description, most fifth-grade students had understood the characteristics of triangles sides, but a lot of graders have to strengthen the understanding in the characteristics of triangles angles. 2The performance of finding the suitable quadrangles from words description, a lot of students only paid attention to the general identities of figures, but were not clear to the inclusion concept. 4. The aspect of detecting the characteristics of figures: 1A lot of fifth-grade students could not recognize acute triangles and obtuse triangles from illustration very well, and were unfamiliar with both their characteristics or confused with each other. 2It was found that the shapes of triangles and quadrangles were affected by visual errors and the change of positions. 3It was discovered that the right angle and parallel sides of figures were affected by positions, the equilateral length or equiangular degrees. 5. The aspect on the relation of line symmetry: 1The fifth-grade students mostly understood the corresponding relation of symmetry that the line of symmetry was vertical, but they did not quite understand the corresponding relation of symmetry that the line of symmetry was horizontal or inclined. 2A lot of students still lacked judgment or examination to two sided shapes of the line of symmetry were congruent or not, and lacked the recognition to the connected line of symmetric points was equally divided and vertically by the line of symmetry. 6. The aspect of performance assessments in plane figures: A lot of fifth-grade students III
were unfamiliar with two or three triangles to make a designated quadrangle, the operative method of observing the sum of the degrees on a triangle and the operative experience of relation between circumference length and diameter multiple. 7. The high, medium and low accomplishment students performance in plane figures learning: Mostly high accomplishment students understood every concepts. A few medium accomplishment students were affected by positions or recognized them by the visual point of view. Most low accomplishment students who could not analyse by shapes composite elements or characteristics, they still stayed in the visual recognition. 8. The causes of most fifth-grade students misconception to plane figures:1direct visual errors.2the effect of position changes.3the cognition to figures characteristics is not completed or learn them by rote. 4According to the figure forms of teaching materials design and figures position.5the experience of manipulation and practical measure was not enough. At last, this research brings up some suggestions, and provides related people reference materials that are in plane figure teaching material design, teaching and advanced studies. Key words: fifth-grade students, plane figures, learning performance IV
