The Belief in Monk Ji-Gong and His Temples in South Taiwan Chang Chung-Liang Lecturer, General Education Center, Tainan Woman s College of Arts Technology Abstract The belief in Ji-Gong has been very popular in Taiwan nowadays. In order to realize the development of the belief activities and Ji-Gong Temples, the author has made a field study to do a investigation of the temples in Jayi, Tainan, and Kaoshung so as to find out some practical and solid information. This thesis is trying to reveal the different versions about the status of original Ji-Gong Temple, the process of building the temples, the statues, the religious activities and development, and the meaning of the belief in Ji-Gong. In conclusion, the author found out that Ji-Gong-belief has its unique power. In one way, it exists in other religious beliefs to preach and save the world. In the other, it exists in individuals to console and heal their spirit, and to solve their problems as well and that makes this belief widespread.
