47 281 The Study of the Youth s Usage of Text-based Short Message of the Mobile phone Mei-Chun Yeh Graduate Institute of Telecommunication National Chungcheng University ABSTRACT To use McLuhan s words, medium is the message; each media has different characteristics that would limit the content of those messages. Therefore, different media would create distinct communication needs and suit to varied communicative occasions. Hence, the SMS also results in some special phenomena and the new social interaction mode. Trying to observe the youth s usage behavior and using situation of the SMS, this research uses the in-depth interview and the content analysis of the SMS. This research shows that the SMS and cellular phone satisfy youth s different communication needs. Moreover, the different sensibilities toward the words of the users would affect the users usage and attitude toward the SMS editing and saving.
