(9) Ethnic Groups and Ethnic Politics in Taiwan : An Analysis Hao Shiyuan 123 The termethnic groupwas first used in Taiwan by ethnologists when researching ethnic minorities or mountain people. Along with changes in political structure and the establishment of the Democratic Progressive Party, it came into the domain of political life after the late 1970s when theopposition movement emerged. In the interaction of the post2modernpolitics of differenceandpolitics of identity, it became a cultural tool for building up and differentiating political groups in state identity and thedebate on Unification or Independence. Advocates of Taiwan s independence have gone out of their way to make use of the term to incite disaccord between people of different provincial origin. Chinese mainland researchers Should bear the political dimension of the term in mind. (10) Nation as a Historical Expressive Unit Peng Zhaorong 137 In ethnology and anthropology, nationπnationality is often an expressive unit. However, the term is full of contradictions and paradoxes, as it is diverse in semantics and boundaries. There are three major boundaries : the politics of theimagined community, i. e., the nation2state ; the formation of geocentric cultures and local groups ; and expression in the historical memory and ethnic identity of specific nationalities. These three boundaries overlap yet are not identical with each other. Sometimes they are conflicting. The master narrative always dominates in the interaction of the three, so that historical narrative of nation carries apparent evidence ofbeing fabricated. A great gap lies between historical narrative and historical reality. The paper sets out to use historical anthropology to account for differences of national self2expression. (11) Ci2poetry as a Narrative Genre Zhang Haiou 148 The ci2poetry in Chinese literature has usually been studied as a narrative rather than an expressive genre. With the concepts and approach of structural analysis of narrative texts, I try to see and explain ci2 poetry as a narrative genre. A ci2poem is usually composed of four parts : the name of the tune, the title, the foreword and the lyric. In its early days, the name of the tune was often used as the title, summarizing the theme ; the function of the title was to introduce the story ; while the forewords served as an extension of the title on the one hand, and an introduction of the background story and the methods in lyric writing. Unlike other narratives, a ci2lyric tells a story in segmented and poetic details, usually in the first person. The longer works may have relatively complete plot under the influence from the f u2prose, while the shorter ones usually work through metaphors, as poems do. Compared with fictions, the stories told in ci are more refined and reserved in term of style and preferred by literati. 207
