Research and Interests Irish Literature in English, Irish Cultural History, Poetry in English. Dr. Chris Morash Dr. Chris Morash is the Director of Media Studies at NUI Maynooth. He is currently working on a history of the media in Ireland, commissioned by Cambridge University Press. This study will begin with the advent of print in the 1550's, and move through cinema, radio and television to electronic media. His previous book was A History of Irish Theatre (2002). 13 Nigel Leask ( ) 13 Nottingham Trent University's Centre for Travel Writing Studies (CTWS) exists to facilitate, promote and disseminate scholarly research on travel writing and its contexts, without restriction of period, locus, or type of travel writing. We define travel writing broadly and encourage multi- and cross-disciplinary approaches. The Centre, which has strong international links, arranges talks and readings by visiting speakers, hosts self-funded researchers on short- and medium-term visits, and organises seminars and conferences. The Centre welcomes applications from students wishing to work on travel at Master's or doctoral level. His current work concerns visual culture in New York City, and an electronic book on Global and Local Cities (part of a series of electronic books in the

15 15 Humanities and Social Sciences, sponsored by Universitas 21). Professor Tallack directed the Arts and Humanities Research Board 3 Cities Project. HE is a member of the UK Government s Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission. His research interests embrace American intellectual and cultural history; American visual culture and theory; Literary and Visual Representations of Cities; The Short Story; Modernism and Post-modernism; Critical Theory. He was formerly Head of the School of American and Canadian Studies. He is on the Advisory Board of the China Policy Institute at the University of Nottingham. Professor Roger Bromley Chair in Cultural Studies at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of Lost Narratives: Popular Fictions, Politics and Recent History (1988), Narratives for a New Belonging: Diasporic Cultural Fictions (2000), From Alice to Buena Vista: the Films of Wim Wenders (2001), and co-editor of A Cultural Studies Reader: History, Theory, Practice (1995), and A Reader in Cultural Studies (1999). He pioneered the academic study of popular fiction in the 1970s and has also published a large number of scholarly articles and book chapters, and spoken at conferences in 19 countries. As well as working on issues of migration, identity, and narrative, he has written on film from a cultural studies perspective, and his work in progress, Narratives of Hope? Conflict, Reconciliation and Cultural Fictions (on film, literature, performance and commemoration in the context of Bosnia, Rwanda, and South Africa) combines these different approaches. He is on the management board of the Centre for the Study of Post-Conflict Cultures at the University of Nottingham, and for a number of years he was on the executive of the Association for the Teaching of African, Caribbean, and Asian Literatures (Vice-President), chaired the Raymond Williams Trust, and sat on the Board of Directors of the Broadway Media Centre in Nottingham. He has also worked at the universities of Portsmouth, Gloucestershire, and Nottingham Trent and holds three visiting professorships in European universities. He visited Taiwan in Professor Ron Carter My main research interests are in the broad field of applied linguistics. This includes work on corpus and computational linguistics, discourse-based grammar, English vocabulary and the interface between language and literature. In terms of literature and language, my main interest is in the relationship between language and creativity and I have recently completed a book on this topic with particular reference to spoken discourse. I am currently working on two ESRC-funded e-social science projects

16 16 researching the multi-modal relationship between language and gesture and on a national AHRC-funded project into the applications of humanities research to business contexts. I also have current research interests in the discourses of professional and media communication using corpus-linguistic analytical tools. I am advisor to Routledge Publishers, London in English language studies, applied linguistics and English language teaching and learning. I have written, co-authored, edited and co-edited over forty books and one hundred articles in these fields. The most current publication is The Cambridge Grammar of English: A Comprehensive Guide to Spoken and Written Grammar and Usage (CUP, 2006) (co-written with Michael McCarthy) and based on a 10 year research programme involving the development of extensive computer-readable corpora of spoken and written English. The book won the 2007 British Council English Language Innovation Award. I have been at Nottingham University since 1979 and have been Director of the Centre for English Language Education and Head of the School of English Studies. I am currently Director of the Humanities Research Centre, chair the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Strategy Group and am a member of University Research Committee. I am a member of the English Panel for the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise), with particular responsibility for English language and applied linguistics. I am on the Editorial Boards of the journals Applied Linguistics, Journal of Applied Linguistics, Language and Literature, Language Awareness and RELC Journal, and was recently an Editorial Advisor for the Encarta World English Dictionary. I am on the Advisory Board of IATEFL. I was chair of BAAL (British Association for Applied Linguistics) from and was recently elected a fellow of the British Academy for Social Sciences. Dr Macdonald Daly Mac Daly is Director of Undergraduate Studies and Exams Officer in Critical Theory & Cultural Studies. Macdonald Daly s teaching and research interests include Marxism and Postmodernism, particularly their implications for the practical analysis of cultural texts. His publications include editions of texts by various nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary authors for Penguin and Dent, as well as papers in a wide variety of journals, including The Modern Language Review and Critique. He has published Crackpot Texts: Absurd Explorations in Modern and Postmodern Literature (1997) and A Primer in Marxist Aesthetics (1999). A new edition of the volume Karl Marx and Federick Engles on Literature and Art is forthcoming. He is also co-editor of Keywords: A Journal of Cultural Materialism.

17 17 Dr Sean Matthews Sean Matthews is Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary Literature, and Director of the D.H. Lawrence Research Centre. He has published widely on cultural theory and twentieth century literature, and has taught on these topics in Britain, Japan, the US, and, for the British Council, in Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. His Raymond Williams is forthcoming in the Routledge Critical Thinkers series (ed. Robert Eaglestone), and he is currently working on a major study, The Uses of Lady Chatterley. His anthology of critical theory, Theories: A Reader, edited with Aura Sibisan of the University of Brasov, Romania, was published in 2003, and included his introductory essays and apparatus. He has recently directed events, panels, lectures and seminars around issues in contemporary studies for the British Council ( Reading Worlds, The Oxford Conference 2004; and Reading Reputations, the Oxford Conference 2005); the CCUE Annual Conference ( Contemporary Classrooms, Oxford 2004); ESSE ( Chronotopes of the Contemporary, Zaragosa 2004); and the Learning and Teaching Support Network, LTSN ( Condition of the Subject, London 2003). He is a contributor to contemporarywriters.com, and reviews for a number of newspapers and journals. Dr James Moran My research is primarily concerned with twentieth century drama. I am particularly interested in the theatre of Ireland, and my previously published work examines plays by writers such as Sean O Casey, W.B. Yeats, and G.B. Shaw, as well as analysing a range of non-literary dramatic performances. I am currently writing a study of theatre and performance events staged in Birmingham from the nineteenth century to the present. I also teach on a number of modules at Nottingham, and convene the undergraduate modules Introduction to Drama and Twentieth-Century Plays', as well as the MA module, The Role of the Dramaturg. Vinenzo Raimo Head of International Office As Head of International Student Recruitment, Vincenzo is responsible for the promotion of the University of Nottingham overseas and for supporting teaching and research links world-wide. The aim of our visit is to explore possibilities for conducting transnational research projects under the joint aegis of Britain's Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Taiwan's NSC, to develop inter-institutionally coordinated research and exchange programs, and to invite scholars and critics from the UK as well as from around the world to discuss new or alternative approaches to British literature in Asia. I hope you both had a good trip back to London and enjoyed your weekend there after what was a very busy schedule. It sounds like it has been a highly productive visit and I found our exchange to be particularly fruitful in suggesting new areas of collaboration. I will send you a note of all the areas we discussed in due course, but at this point I would like to focus on one area where we could make an immediate impact: a thematic call for networks of UK and Taiwanese that would coincide with the call for proposals for the Beyond Text strategic programme. There is need for urgent action here, as Professor Welch will be finalising the call for proposals in the next few weeks. I will be meeting Professor Welch next Tuesday (10 July) and this is one of the items we will discuss. It would be useful to have an indication from you both before then as to how you would wish to proceed. My initial thoughts are that Taiwanese-UK proposals would be submitted to the Beyond Text programme and compete on the bass of excellence with other UK-based proposals. We would ask NSC to ominate taiwanese reviewers for bilateral proposals and in all other respects the mechanism would be the same as that outlined in the MoU. The Beyond Text commissioning panel would have make the final funding recommendations. NSC would then provide matching funding for successful applications.
