411 A Comment on Whether Wang Ch ung s Thought Conforms to Scientific Standards Chin-Ming Liu Abstract Ever since Hu Shih published his article Wang Ch ung s Lun heng in the early 1930s, scholars have been debating whether Wang Ch ung s ideas were scientific. This paper aims to offer a thorough resolution to the question of whether Wang Ch ung s thought conforms to scientific standards. First, the author provides an analysis of various views on this issue and reveals their underlying theoretical basis. Next, a standard for analyzing and judging this issue is put forward using K. R. Popper s demarcation of the scientific and the non-scientific. After this, the author employs logic theory and the idea of cognitive patterns to clarify the type of analogy Wang Ch ung uses and the mistakes he made. Finally, there is a discussion as to the appropriateness of accepting Hu Shih s value standard and measuring Wang Ch ung s thought in terms of whether it is scientific.
