I NSC91-2411-H-011-002 401 1979 2001 2000 22 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Abstract The research analyzed picture style of 401 illustrations in children s picture books published by Shin-Yi Foundation from 1979 to 2001 The results indicate firstly, the previous abstract style in earlier research about 404 samples published by government is omitted and combined into the decoration style Additionally, the fairytale-cartoon, decoration, and caricature are three main styles of Shin-Yi s samples Secondly, the main characteristics of styles of Shin-Yi s samples are creating from children s viewpoints, adopting children-liked form, and adopting children s artwork-liked form Thirdly, the meanings of the style changing through the comparison with earlier research reflect the progress about picture book in Taiwan are concluded 1 Making children s picture book from adult s viewpoint gradually became to child s viewpoint; 2 Comparing with literalness, there is gradually more importance of graphic image in communication; 3 The profession of being illustrator of children s picture book is gradually required and developed; 4 The illustration plays the role of accessory to the content gradually to independent artistic expression; 5 The function of picture book is from education-only to multifunctions; 6 The rising of childishnessism; 7 The illustration style was from passive and objective became positive and subjective; 8 The aesthetic influences from the foreign and the native was alternatively shown The researchers also suggest the possible directions for the future development of illustration style in Taiwan Key words children s picture book, illustration style, Shin-Yi foundation, private sectors 1
