The Stat us of Vernacular Chinese in Literary History and t he Vernacular Trend in the New Literature : The Debate among New Literature Advocates during the Post May Fourt h Movement Period L uo Zhitian (74) In the early 1920 s, some Shanghai members of the Literature Studies Association vigorously echoed Hu Shi s call to put the nation s literary heritage in order. However, they had many differences with Hu over specific ideas. These differences mostly related to vernacular literature. Yan Jicheng, a member of the Literature Studies Association, criticized Hu Shi for a tendency toevaluate old verse by vernacular standards. Both sides argued over this point, focusing on what was the mainstream of literary history. 36 The Nanjing Massacre was the most miserable disaster experienced by China in the 20th century. J ust like the Oswiecim Massacre, the Nanjing Massacre is also one of the most important disasters in human history. However, until now in Japan the party causing the disaster the Nanjing Massacre has been publicly blotted out ( the fabrication school ), or diluted ( the so called moderate school, orobjective school ). Nevertheless, as soon as the Japanese version of Rabe s Diary, which is famous for disclosing the Nanjing Massacre carried out by Japanese Army, was published, various criticism appeared. In the latest round of denying the Nanjing Massacre, Unemoto Masaki s The Truth about the N anjing Incident : Scrutiny of John Rabe s Diary is relatively typical. Unemoto argues that under hisobjectivescrutiny, the Japanese Army s atrocities noted in Rabe s Diary prove to bebaseless fabrication. At the same time, he argues that Rabe s Diary can testify to theinnocenceof the Japanese Army. With concrete analysis, this article proves that even if one only considers materials recognized by Unemoto and his school, the results of Unemoto sscrutinyare completely invalid.
