3 Foreword NTSO 2011/ "NTSO" NTSO... As we celebrate the 100 th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, as its oldest symphony orchestra, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra has prepared a program of outstanding music to share with the nation over the much anticipated Season. Cultural endeavors often require cross-disciplinary collaboration, long-term planning and implementation. Since its founding in 1945, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra has set many important records in the musical world. As Taiwan's economy grew and its society evolved, the NTSO began to assume diverse roles and responsibilities aside from traditional concert-hall performances. These include inviting teachers and students from middle and elementary schools to come and share in the beauty of classical music, helping Taiwan's composers create new works, reaching out to small towns and villages in the countryside, and holding music camps for youth from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The NTSO has stayed true to its mission, working quietly and diligently whilst creating a new image of Taiwan's music scene around the world with its many superb performances. Under the meticulous planning of new Artistic Advisor Lan Shui, the new season presents Beethoven's symphonies as main theme to integrate an ambitious year-long program reflecting the NTSO's vibrant energy and spirit. Certainly, the NTSO will reach another peak as the Republic of China marches towards its next centenary. The NTSO collaborates with the Tourism Bureau to hold concerts including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and operas at gorgeous Sun Moon Lake. Their exquisite performances of diverse genres help promote tourism in Taiwan. As you thumb through this pamphlet, you will be impressed by the caliber of performers assembled by the NTSO as well as the sheer sophistication of the program itself. 4 Foreword 2011/12 NTSO Under the guidance and planning of Artistic Advisor Lan Shui, the main program of National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) 2011/12 Season, Beethoven Series, revolves around Beethoven's nine symphonies and other related pieces of great significance. These masterpieces provide superb opportunities for artistic growth for the orchestra and also generate numerous topics of discussion for the community at large. Not only does the selection of music by the German great masters drive the members of the orchestra to sharpen their skills and bring out their best, it also serves as an excellent introduction to classical music for the culturally-minded. In addition to the keen selection of the pieces, all the concerts feature distinguished guest conductors and soloists to partner with the orchestra, such as conductor Christopher Seaman, cellist Jian Wang, and violinist Sarah Chang. Without a doubt, their virtuosity will satiate the appetites of the audience. Established in Taichung and nourished by the city, the NTSO has become the leading orchestra in central Taiwan. To build an art-loving community, to elevate the level of appreciation for classical music, to expand the art market, and to bring worldclass performances to Taiwan constitute the Orchestra's mission. 5 NTSO 2011/12 NTSO NTSO Christopher Rouse NTSO NTSO 2011/12 NTSO NTSO New Concert Season awaits your participation The magic of music comes from the heart-touching feeling generated by the players with full concentration, and this wonderful magic can be instant, eternal, and even become part of the sentiment in our daily life. 2011/12 NTSO New Concert Season will disclose this magic to all philharmonic friends. In this new season, which is imbued with brand new approaches, we are honored to have Mr. Cho-Liang Lin, the world-renowned Taiwanese-American violinist, as our Artist-in-residence and also delighted to have lots of world renown musicians to join us. The program of this season will center on the nine symphonies by Beethoven and extend itself to include many Classical and Romantic masterpieces. The NTSO feature concert, Legendary Year 1911, presents the music written 100 years ago by Prokofiev, Stravinsky, and R.Strauss in one single concert. Besides, violin concerto by Sibelius and Tchaikowsky, piano concerto by Grieg and Beethoven, cello concerto by Haydn are also the highlights of this season. Of course, Beethoven's immortal "Fidelio" is indeed another must-see of this year. The program of this season ranges widely, from the most classical Haydn to the famous American contemporary composer Christopher Rouse's work. 6 NTSO 2011/12 NTSO NTSO 2011/12 NTSO NTSO 2011/12 New Concert Season, Full-hearted Music Whenever I collaborated with the NTSO in recent seasons, I have been deeply impressed by the enthusiasm, effort and collective integrity of the members of this excellent ensemble. With the goal of obtaining the finest performance possible, we all work toward giving our audience a most fulfilling musical experience. The 2011/12 programs of the NTSO reflects this goal by inviting some of the finest musicians in the world to perform and to conduct. The caliber of these artists and the programs all will certainly bring the overall musicianship of the NTSO to yet a higher level. Among the programs, apart from surveying all nine symphonies of Beethoven during the upcoming season, my own participation will include chamber music collaborations with the members of the NTSO. I hope the intimacy of chamber music will bring the audience closer in touch to the great classics of Mozart and Schubert. C Concert in Triple C 水藍 Conductor / Lan Shui BIS (Gil Shaham) (Movement) 2008 With the ingenuity of Artistic Advisor Lan Shui, the NTSO has designed a program that revolves around Beethoven's nine symphonies, known as the NTSO Beethoven Series. The combination of Beethoven's symphonies and other great pieces of classical music will be so inspiring as to spark philosophical thoughts on music and life. "Concert in Triple C" will start off the spectacular 2011/12 Season for the NTSO. The tonality of C symbolizes the essence of the universe, just like the sun with its powerful light is the source of all that is alive in music. In this spectacular concert where Lan Shui himself will conduct, the juxtaposition of Beethoven's Sy mphony No.1 in C Major and Br ahm's Symphony No.1 in C minor will allow the audience to experience the depth, the richness, and the genius of the tonality of C. In addition, cellist Wang Jian will perform the third piece, Haydn's Cello Concerto in C Major. 11 NTSO 13 Beaux Arts Trio 6 NTSO Apotheosis of the Dance In "Apotheosis of the Dance," the second part of Beethoven Series, the NTSO collaborates with English maestro Christopher Seaman and the worldrenowned American pianist Menahem Pressler to perform Beethoven symphonies and concerto whose well-defined rhythms and affectionate melodies are bound to captivate you and heighten your senses. It will be the first performance in Taiwan for conductor Seaman, who has already served for thirteen years as the Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. His style is precise, authoritative, and inspiring. Pianist Pressler is both a legendary soloist and a chamber musician. He has received six Grammy nominations, Germany's highest honor, the German Cross of Merit First Class, and France's highest cultural honor, the Commandeur in the Order of Arts and Letters Award. The combination of Seaman and Pressler and their interpretation on Beethoven is an experience not to be missed. To celebrate the 100th birthday of ROC, NTSO Artistic Advisor Lan Shui planned the concert entitled "Legendary Year 1911", featuring pianist Sa Chen and music written a hundred years ago. "Petrouchka" was first performed in 1911 by the Ballets Russes in Paris. The plot portrays the unrequited love story of a Russian traditional puppet. Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 1 completed between 1911 and 1912 was a product of his days at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The straightforward style and sudden contrasts in this piece won him the prestigious Anton Rubenstein Competition. Richard Strauss finished Der Rosenkavalier in The elegant, smooth melody and splendid orchestral effects create lingering warmth in this piece. "Legendary Year 1911", presented by Lan Shui and Sa Chen, will definitely remind the audience what a special year 1911 was and help them recall the epic history of the ROC. 25

16 聡 1995 NTSO Laughter and Humor This program is organized by the NTSO conductor Fusao Kajima, and presents the unique combination of "Beethoven, Steelpan, and Prokofiev." Although Beethoven's "Symphony No. 4" and "Romeo & Juliet" are familiar to the audience, the participation of the steelpan maestro Liam Teague will add a new twist to the experience. Steelpan is originally a type of folk musical instrument in Central America, but nowadays steelpan performers are widely sought after by the main symphony orchestras around the world. In 1995, Liam Teague and the Chicago Sinfonietta gave the world premiere of Illinois composer Jan Bach's "Concerto for Steelpan and Orchestra." According to critics, Liam Teague can play arpeggios like Midori or Shaham on violin. Hailed as the Paganini of Steelpan, the 30-something vir tuoso from Trinidad has hands like lightening. His partnership with the NTSO will mark his debut performance in Taiwan. The plot of "Fidelio" depicts the rescue of an unjustly detained political prisoner, Don Florestan. To save her husband, Leonora disguises herself in male attire and bravely enters the dungeon under the name of Fidelio. This story of conjugal love mirrors how countless couples in Taiwan conquered the fears of the "White Terror" and the controls of an authoritarian state, to make way for liberty, justice, and equality. 25 大願千秋 Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera "A Benevolent Spirit" 唐美雲歌仔戲團 Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera In 2009, the Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra co-produced "The Face of Adversity," an ethical tragedy that won the acclaim of the audience by bringing them catharsis. To form a deeper partnership and to elevate the quality of the production, in 2011 the two groups team up again to make the Taiwanese opera "A Benevolent Spirit." It is truly regrettable that these days, as the news often reminds us, excessive desires for power, possession, and lust can change all kinds of human relationships (filial, fraternal, and conjugal) and make people can act in a way that is contrary to ethics and morals. In "A Benevolent Spirit," the main character's lack of desires, innocence, and humility should serve as a reminder for all of us to dwell in peace and to pave the way for another Golden Era in Taiwan

He is completely self-taught and produces many concertos, symphonies, and even movie soundtracks including the 2003 remake of the "Astro Boy". His simplistic yet profound style has won him numerous fans in Japan. Conductor Fusao Kajima will open the concert with Yoshimatsu's famous piece, "Dream Colored Mobile" to show audience the vitality and charm of Yoshimatsu. Immediately following would be the performance of Korean-American violinist Sarah Chang, who initially joined the music world as a child prodigy. It has been five years since Sarah Chang last collaborated with the NTSO, and her performance of Sibelius violin concerto is certainly much anticipated. Furthermore, considered by critics to be one of his finest symphonic works, Dvorak's Symphony No. 7 is certainly not to be missed.
