3 中英文摘要與關鍵字 中文摘要 : 本研究計劃嘗試從文化史的取徑, 對於曾經在十九世紀歐洲和晚清中國都被為一種 人 造天堂 的鴉片消費進行比較研究 同樣是鴉片消費, 兩個世界卻發展出全然不同的文化 : 鴉片文學和煙具 煙館的社會 - 物質文化 吸 ( 中國的鴉片煙 ) 或食 ( 歐洲的鴉片酊 ) 方 式的不同, 本身是一系列消費模式所開展出不同意義的文化產物, 也是構成其不同意義的 物質條件 做為世界資本主義的重要商品之一, 鴉片曾經為這兩個世界的現代性經驗帶來 完全不同的矛盾與命運 十九世紀歐洲, 以醫藥的國家論述, 將工人家庭常備藥品的鴉片 酊, 判定為不合法的藥用濫用 ; 同時, 浪漫主義作家藉由它尋求內在經驗的出神, 試圖逾 越布爾喬亞社會價值的梏桎, 卻成為上流社會炙手可熱的文化產品 而普遍消費的晚清中 國, 鴉片如其煙霧燎繞, 同時是帝國治理極度頭疼的課題, 但又是極度平凡的日常生活用 品 : 不所不在的煙館是人們社會生活的場所, 奢華的煙具更是展示主人身位的好客之道 本研究執行迄今八個月, 主要工作集中在廣泛蒐集相關的史料, 尤其是中國方面 另外也 帶領研究小組研讀研究文獻與詮釋理論, 企圖從比較觀點提出一些新的敘事架構 英文摘要 : From the comparative studies of cultural history approach, this research project tries to analysis the cultures of opium consumption which was very commune both in Europe of 19 th century and in China s Late Imperial period. Once considered as an artificial paradise, the common consumption of opium developed two totally different cultures. Smoking in China and Eating(drinking in fact) in Europe, the way of appropriation is itself a culture production and the material condition which determines its culture meanings. As a commodity of world capitalism, the opium brought to this two worlds the different paradoxes and destinies. In 19 th Europe, state-medical discourse condemned opiate use in working clas families as drug s abuse, while the romantic writers search the ecstasy of inner experience through it, tries to escape the social constraints of bourgeois society, but their works become the popular culture products in the upper society. The popular use of opium in the Late Imperial China, just as its smoking, was the highly concerning issue of imperial govern, also the extreme ordinary object of everyday life: the everywhere opium dens was the common place of social life, the sumptuous pipe showing the prestigious status is the necessary hospitality. This project realize until now 8 months, the main working concentrates in collecting the historical data as wide as possible, specially the Chinese data, also in studying the research papers and some theories. 4 精簡期中報告內容 本研究獲國科會補助兩年期的計劃 ( 原申請為三年 ), 迄今執行八個月 鴉片的消費曾 經在十九世紀全世界的共同記憶, 不只是中國和歐洲, 也在南洋和北美幾個重要城市, 環 繞著鴉片或有關它的文化產品已經成為世界文化資產之一 這種世界文化資產包括歐洲的 鴉片文學 中國的煙具和煙館文化 各式各樣以鴉片店為背景的小說或電影, 以及透過禁 毒所建立的一系列的反毒文學或建國論述 (State-building discourses), 還有透過與鴉片污名 化生產出來諸多東方主義的想像, 如 1904 年 St. Louis 萬國博會裡代表中國人形象的抽鴉片 官員 然而, 同樣是鴉片消費十九世紀歐洲 ( 英國與法國 ) 與晚清中國卻展現出兩種不同的 文化 本研究計劃試圖以文化史比較研究, 分析曾經被視為人造天堂 (Ch. Baudelaire 用語 ) 或極樂世界 ( 俞蛟用語 ) 的鴉片, 如何因著使用方式 ( 吸或食 ) 的不同, 也因著歷史際遇的偶 然 社會脈絡的差異以及文化想像的迥異, 而生產出兩種截然不同的鴉片消費文化或情懷 : 一個是浪漫想像的鴉片文學, 另一個則是東亞病夫的代名語 我們試圖還原鴉片消費在 m 兩個社會的生活樣貌, 勾勒在刻板印象外的豐富意義 原計劃內容依據以下幾個工作假設進行 : 一 以社會生活的視角, 探測鴉片的消費規 模 ; 二 消費形態和消費情境的社會與文化意義 ; 三 東方 / 西方異域想像的交錯 ; 四 鴉片快感享用的文化意義 ; 五 鴉片消費做為 技術性補遺 (technical supplement) 的文化 研究 由於這些研究線索涉及廣泛的主題, 資料類型包括醫學書藉 文學與藝術作品 官 方或民間的檔案資料 報章雜誌和其他圖像資料 在中國的資料方面, 將有系統地檢閱清 代的官方和民間檔案資料 筆記小說 晚清小說 地方志 以及西方人到中國的遊記 第一年的研究, 順應匿名審查委員的建議, 集中在以中國方面為主的文獻蒐集 研究 小組以每二週聚會方式, 一方面為了訓練研究助理, 共同閱讀相關研究文獻 ( 參見文獻探 討部分 ); 另一方面也透過定期聚會討論設計蒐集資料的方法以及其所面臨問題的解決方 案 也討論收集到資料的性質以及可能的問題 ( 參見研究方法部分 ) 這份期中報告也將呈 現第一年度進度, 亦即依不性質的文獻資料, 羅列資料蒐集的結果以及第二年預計工作的 資料與方向 ( 參見參考文獻部分 ) 最後, 針對這些研究成果做簡要的討論, 其重點在檢視前述的工作假設是否有修正的 必要, 以及現階段所面臨的困難與問題 中國鴉片消費的歷史敘事, 屬於現代性敘事的其中一種 : 介於國家建構 (state-building) 需要而來的民族主義倫理政治敘事, 以及殖民帝國主義背景的全球資本主義體系的世界經 濟史敘事之間 兩者不同旨趣的研究也反映在不同地區的研究成果以及鴉片史料的彙整方 式 在中國方面, 基於愛國主義的號召, 鴉片史料的整理及其研究成果傾向禁毒歷程社會 教育的延續 對於有關鴉片有關的禁令, 鴉片毒害的實況記錄以及不同政權 ( 晚清帝國 國民黨 軍閥和共產黨 ) 下土產鴉片生產 流通 消費有較細緻的描述 而在中國以外的 地區, 將鴉片問題放入殖民帝國資本主義進入中國, 經濟史和世界史的視野與取徑是其重 要的特性 資料使用的強處在於大量的檔案資料如中國海關報告 Royal Commission on 2

5 Opium, 北華捷報 (North China Herald) 和中國叢報 (Chinese Repository), 還有大量的外國人在 中國各地遊記的觀察 而近十幾年來, 有關鴉片的研究又再引起廣泛的注意 : 一方面更激 烈突顯上述兩種研究取徑的對立 ( 如 Frank 的 Narcotic Culture 或 Inner Opium War 引起的爭 議 ), 另一方面, 幾本企圖從文化史與物質史的角度希望從不同的視角開展了鴉片研究即有 歷史敘事方式 ( 我們在文獻探討的部分再細談 ) 除了有關中國鴉片的研究外, 十九世紀歐洲 ( 尤其是英國與法國 ) 則是另一個鴉片消 費重要地區 歐洲鴉片的消費, 不只在吸食型態上 ( 飲用的鴉片酊 (Laudanum)) 與中國不 同, 所展現的文化型態亦迥異 : 從家庭常備的萬能藥到布爾喬亞文人的取樂的飲品, 這些 著名的文人如 Coleridge Thomas de Quency, Aldous Huxley, Charles Baudelaire. 文人的鴉片 作品恰恰是上流社會最時髦的文化產品 本研究在即有的研究基礎之上, 試圖從文化史比較研究十九世紀歐洲鴉片消費與鴉片 文學的生產, 對照晚清中國日常生活的大量鴉片消費 我們試圖比較兩個文化如何將鴉片 消費視之為一個問題 關注 憂慮, 總之, 在兩種文化下如何構成不同的問題意識, 造成 不同的問題 除了研究計劃本身需要的文獻探討外, 本計劃也藉著此培訓助理之研究能力 研究小 組以每兩週開會討論現有關於鴉片的研究文獻, 我們經由這些研究文獻探討問其中問題意 識的形成, 主要的論點 尋找可參考之史料文獻 總之, 透過共同討論, 從中學習研究經 驗, 進一步訓練研究助尋找可使用的資料以及分析資料的方法 目前為此共閱讀以下的文章或書籍 :C. Trocki 的 Opium Empire, 鄭揚文的新書 Social life of Opium,C. Heriot 的 上海妓女 (Belles de Shanghai), 馬克夢 (Keith MacMahon) 的 The Fall of God of Money 和 «Opium Somking and Modern Subjecitive»; 兩本討論英國鴉片消費的文 化研究 :V. Berridge 的 Opium and People B. Milligan 的 Pleasure and Pains, 以及兩篇 J. Derrida 的 Rhetoric of Drugs 及 Pharmakon 的文章 以下就以這幾本著作分別討論它們對 本研究的意義 ( 由於馬克夢的 The Fall of God of Money 已於前次研究計劃申請書中討論過, 不再此重覆, 僅就他最近發表的文章 Opium Somking and Modern Subjectivity 討論 ): Carl Trocki 的 Opium Empire 從世界經濟史的角度, 探討鴉片在十九世紀世界經濟體係 以及依賴這個體系帝國主義所扮演的角色, 已經成為鴉片研究的重要經典 他最引人著目 的兩個論點分別是鴉片繼香料 糖 白銀 茶 咖啡後是整個資本主義世界經纃在十九世 紀主要的經濟來源 因此, 根據鴉片貿易在整個世界經濟的收益, 他推論若是沒有鴉片貿 易, 英國殖民帝國主義是不可能建立起來 進一步他論證, 同理若非鴉片貿易整個世界經 濟體係也將無法建立 當然, 他有一系列精闢的論證以及豐富的歷史研究支持, 這裡不可 避免地減化他這兩個主要論證 然而, 再精緻的研究證據, 也無法掩飾其論證最簡單而明 顯的弱點 : 即使沒有鴉片做十九世紀世界經濟貿易的主要商品或貨幣, 資本主義永遠可以 找到另一個貿易商品, 就像白銀取代香料 糖等商品一樣 因此沒有鴉片貿易, 英國殖民 帝國依然可以建立, 世界經濟體係仍舊以同樣的方式支配著歐洲以外的其他世界 儘管如 此,C. Trocki 對亞洲從印度洋到中國海的鴉片貿易研究還是非常值得注意, 特別是荷蘭人 和英國人如何透過鴉片輸入南洋各國建立起殖民的統治, 以及應地域華人社群在十六到十 九世紀政治社會與鴉片的吸食發展有重大的研究貢獻, 而他的另一本專論此議題的書 : Opium and empire : Chinese society in Colonial Singapore, , 在此旨趣下更是本研究 3

6 必須關注的 另一本被受注目的中國鴉片研究則是鄭揚文的 Social Life of Opium in China 可能是近年來第一本以物質文化史的角度正視鴉片做為一個獨立自主的歷史, 亦即鴉片的歷史不再是政治史的不得不附帶提的一筆或近代帝國主義經濟入侵的悲慘一頁 鄭揚文以五個時期勾勒鴉片在中國四百年的消費樣貌, 並賦予鴉片先生鮮活的社會生命 社會生命也同時是不同歷史期環繞著鴉片的社會生活風貌 此書最重要的貢獻之一即這種社會生活, 鴉片消費不再是模糊刻板印象的鐵板一大塊 他從三個面向 : 歷史進程 ( 從晚明到共產黨建國的 ), 地理擴散 ( 從廣州 - 內府繼而沿海走私到內地廣植 ) 和社會階層的仿效 ( 從宮廷 京師士大夫, 各地官員和士紳到農民和苦力 ), 全面卻細緻地描述鴉片每一個階級的消費以及在不同社會階級和情境的文化意義 用他的話來說, 每一個社會階級對鴉片的使用都重新定義了它的社會價值及其文化意義 : 春藥 社交禮儀 財富或特權展示 交換的貨幣 勞動力的再生劑或女性抗議冤屈的自殺工具等等 C. Heriot 的 上海妓女 對本研究的旨趣以下兩點 : 首先, 做為鴉片消費最繁盛上海租界, 鴉片煙館甲天下, 有必要瞭解性工業與鴉片煙業交織成的社會生活場域 其次, 此書研究所使用的研究方法及其檔案史料 ( 特別是法國家檔案館法租界檔案 ), 值得學習如何建立上海鴉片店的微觀研究 : 經營方式 運銷分佈 管理監控 訴訟糾紛等, 以比較札實的資料為上海鴉片店做個案研究學習 有關十九世紀英國鴉片消費最經典的研究應屬 V. Berridge 的 Opium and People 也因為這本書我們第一次認識到鴉片在英國不只是少數幾個文人墨客的文化創造助興之物, 而曾經是一些地區 Fanland 普遍消費的家庭常備萬靈藥 前述本研究申請書計劃內容已提及, 十九世紀中期以後, 醫藥專業化的發展, 對藥品的管制, 讓普遍使用鴉片酊成為一種 濫用 (abuse) 結合醫療- 國家的論述關注於國民健康的公共衛生, 最普遍使用鴉片正是維多利亞社會底層的工人和女人, 成為 有問題的階級 (problematic class) 相較於這些社會底層有礙國家生產力的 濫用, 文人墨客的鴉片癮, 即使是明確的宣告鴉片是他們追求享樂的工具, 但因為鴉片文學受到上流社會青睬, 是一種符合工作倫理的文化產品, 而被接受進而被仿效 十九世紀英國社會這種同時 妖魔化 鴉片劑的濫用又 浪漫化 鴉片文學的矛盾, 必須加上殖民帝國主義將 鴉片 與 東方 劃上等號的污名化運動 由於同時期英國本土面對日益深入日常生活的殖民地產品 ( 茶 糖 咖啡等 ), 東方文化所帶來的影嚮以及恐懼的文化反抗 在這方面 Barry Milligan 的書 :Pleasure and Pains 提供從文學批評來的視角 作者以十九世紀的英國文學作品中, 帝國主義, 民族認同, 最後, 再提 K. MacMahon 的最近一篇文章 : Opium Smoking and Modern Subjectivity 此文延續他前書 The Fall of God of Money 的主要論點, 再以文學批評的主體理論 (Lacan, Derrda, Deleuze) 進而論證, 中國晚清鴉片書寫 ( 特別是張昌甲的 «烟話») 呈現出某種中國現代的主體性 : 離散 去中心化 中西雜柔的主體 馬克夢透過張昌甲的文本, 論證鴉片煙可以是中國人在外來文化 ( 特別是基督教 ) 衝擊下的追尋其認同的主體建構方式 不再屈從於帝國的主體, 而是屈從於消費政權的新現代主體 透過吸鴉片, 中國人以煙 槍 回應西方可怕他者 (uncanny other) 的到來 馬克夢頗具原創性的詮釋, 即使這種現代主體的建構無異阿 Q 精神的主體詮釋 再說, 張昌甲的文本在中國鴉片書寫中非常獨特, 我們不確定立基於他的文本詮釋有多少的有效性? 4

7 由於本研究計劃牽涉兩種文化的比較研究, 兩個社會在鴉片消費所展現的文化意義和 表徵非常不同 : 十九世紀歐洲, 透過鴉片酊的吃食, 強調內在經驗的探索, 進行追求在文 學創作神秘的靈感 於是, 承載鴉片消費的經驗主要是文學作品的的文本, 尤其是探索內 在經驗的懺悔文類 (confession) 然而在晚清中國, 鴉片消費的文化展現方面則完全不在文 學的創作上, 而在於物質文化的精緻與繁華以及社會生活的豐富 於是, 基於兩種完全不 同的鴉片消費文化, 本研究小組必須依不同性質的史料文獻 ( 見參考文獻 : 二 史料文獻 的分類及附件二 ), 採取不同的研究方法與取徑 : 對於文學作品 ( 不論歐洲鴉片文學或中國 的晚清小說 ), 文學批評的方法依舊是較能掌握各自社會的文化意義 ; 而對面中國的鴉片消 費, 物質文化史和社會生活史的研究取徑可能較呈現其複雜的風貌 當然, 我們無法簡單 地以不同文化對援用一種研究方法 例如, 馬克夢 (Keith MacMahon) 在他的 The Fall of God of Money 即非常精采地以文學批評的方法探討張昌甲的 烟話 和彭養歐的 黑藉冤魂 ; V.
