At 6,000 sq-ft, the design of the two-storey one2free megastore in Hong Kong s Mongkok district is much more than just a place to get a mobile phone or service plan. Designed by Clifton Leung, the space aims to convert a conventional mobile retail shopping experience into a come-and-hangout social invitation. With a design concept inspired by the contemporary and hip lifestyle of the younger generation in metropolitan cities like Manhattan and Los Angeles, dynamic lighting effects and a multisensory environment bestow a memorable wow factor to attract traffic and boost business sales. Clifton Leung, founder of Clifton Leung Design Workshop and a veteran in retail shop design, says the response to the brief had to fulfill the client s requirements from functional and symbolic standpoints. As a vibrant company making a significant jump to the next phase of its development, one2free strives to challenge the traditional concepts of the mobile retail industry, he explains. One2free needed a space where it could turn mobile retail shopping into a social experience the brand is firmly convinced that the days when mobile retail shops were covered with wall of phones and customers need to queue up to be served are long past. Leung responded by turning the capacious site into a modern loft, accentuated by signature brick walls, black metal frames, a pitched roof and a distinct feeling of airy, open space. Leung utilises a dramatic LED lightchanging pitched roof on both floors to create a captivating façade and entrance to pull in more customers. Different shades of ambient lighting work to create a memorable customer experience and prolong their stay within the store. The megastore comprises various experience and leisure zones, into which live devices are embedded to enable hands-on testing of the latest products in a relaxing atmosphere. It means checking out the latest 3D technologies and speed of 4G LTE is a fun, relaxed experience. Musicholic Zone Inspired by Rome s Spanish Steps, one-of-a-kind indoor steps in natural recycled wood are complemented by green stone seating and an innovative planter and an overhead mirrored ceiling creating interesting visual effects. Floorto-ceiling windows offer views of the bustling streets outside. DIY Zone Inspired by the concept of a vintage workshop, Leung added various mechanical lamp designs on a L-shape worktop. A L-shaped table is the centrepiece of this studio, exclusively for customers to learn the coolest features of mobile device with one2free s gadget geeks. Other design elements of note include a feature wall where key brand messages are communicated in the form of raised letters in shades of grey and white against white brick and stainless steel.
