REVIEW The Study of Community and Community Studies A review of recent researches on urban community in China Xiao Lin 185 Abstract This paper distinguishes two types of community-related study the study of community in terms of ontology and the community studies in terms of methodology. Based on this distinction this review discusses latest research development on urban community which could be organized by five themes state-society and a- gents the multiple logics of community participation social capital and social network in community the daily life and social classes in community space and the stratification of communities and differentiation within a community. Furthermore the author provides a basic framework to understand China's urban communities and both kinds of community studies and gives suggestions to overcome the present limitations. The Cross-culture Study under the Vitamin Analytical Pattern A summary of Francis Hsu's overseas research Luo Jinwen 209 Abstract The paper took the vitamin analytical pattern as the reference to summarize and survey Francis Hsu's cross-culture study on China Japan India and A- merica. Furthermore Hsu's works made up different prescription to cure different diseases of specific culture. However inadequacy of Hsu's research lies in the historical localization and the hypothesis of mean social man. Despite the intuitionism of Hsu which may cause his comparative study less strict his broad mind and endeavors still deserve admiration and following.
