On the Restr ictive and Non2restr ictive Function s of Ch inese Adjectives and the Elliptica l Rules for de Phra se CHEN Yujie Abstract This paper is concerned with the restrictive and non2restrictive functions of Chi2 nese adjectives as attributives. Restrictiveness and non2restrictiveness constitute an opposite pair of modifiers at the p ragmatic level. In Chinese, qualitative adjectives and their discrim inative and restrictive features constitute an unmarked match, and stative adjectives and their dep ictive and non2restrictive features do another. It is pointed out that when it is followed by de ( ), functio2 ning as a nuclear, the adjective must be restrictive in nature. It concludes that the factors that in2 fluence the restrictive or non2restrictive functions are modality, sentence word order, the charac2 teristic of the nuclear noun and type of the attributive, in addition to the syntactic and semantic functions of adjectives.
