JI%OXU ) No Abstracts of papers in this issue Concerning the verbal complement of direction and the position of object L U Jianming, p5 Based on a comprehensive investigation, analysis and description, the author finds that the position of the object of the verb with a complement of direction is conditioned by varied factors, such as the nature of the verb, the complement and the object, the exist2 ence or absence of le, and sometimes, the context. The paper gives a detailed descrip2 tion of the rules that govern the position of the object. On the measure word g + object of b in the B 2sentence in modern Chinese [ Japan ] SUGIMURA Hirofumi, p18 This paper attempts to explain from a cognitive point of view the phenomenon of the object of b preceded by the measure word g in the B 2sentence in modern Chinese. It first discusses thoroughly the syntactic and semantic features of the two patterns of b + y ge + Np + V and b + ge + Np + V, with emphasis on the y ge + Np in the former. That is followed by a discussion of the mechanism that brings about the semantic features of the latter pattern and the semantic function of g. Some thoughts on the valence analysis of the triple valence adjective and its approaches ZHANG Guoxian, p28 This paper identifies three prominent features of typical and non2typical triple va2 lence adjectives. The semantic distribution of the triple valence adjective involves is com2 posed of the predicate (P) and three semantic roles. Syntactically, the triple valence ad2 jective requires that the principal and referential filler must be nominal whereas the resul2 tative filler must be a numeral + measure word phrase. There are two sentence pat2 terns that are semantically synonymous, therefore, they have constrains on the valence carrier as well as semantic roles. Finally the author suggests that only by combining anal2 ysis and synthesis, can the syntactic phenomena of sentences be explained. On the other
