An Action-research on the School-based Curriculum for Non-Chinese Speaking Students Learning Chinese in Hong Kong Che-Ying Kwan Chinese Department, Hong Kong Institute of Education Abstract This is an action-research in order to inquire the effectiveness of the non-chinese speaking students learning Chinese in Hong Kong. The research implemented as a school-based curriculum. Research methods include pre-post tests, observation, reflective thinking in teaching, questionnaires, triangulation and quantitative analysis, etc. Research findings are as follows: students could recognize more Chinese characters which showed significant difference in the post-test. However, there was still a distance with the target. Students improved greatly in listening and speaking. They liked the reading materials and read the Chinese stories by themselves. They showed interest in writing and could write sentences in Chinese. They enjoyed the activities held in the Chinese lessons. The teachers involved in this curriculum showed that they liked the teaching materials, adapted the teaching methods and developed different teaching strategies.
