Abstract This research aims at discussing three of Hou Wen Yong s novels, including The Hospital, Dangerous Mind and Souls Embracing. Based on the structure of Cultural Diamond, the thesis is divided into six chapters. First to analyze how Hou s life experience influences his manner of literary writing, pointing out the transformation in the subject matters in Hou s novels after he gave up his medical career to be a full-time writer. Chapter three to chapter five will discuss how literary works express the intention of writer and of the society he belongs to,and reveal artistic values of these three above-mentioned novels via examining their social and satiric elements in writing. As a popular literature writer, Hou is not the one who only concerns for his books selling; moreover, he reveals and reflects the distorted systems and hideous humanity of contemporary society via his novels, intending to lead readers pay close attention to such ignored issues. Hou s popular literary works mainly deal with three dimensions: literature, media and society. He writes about contemporary society via his novels, Hou even shows his concepts of literary creation to his readers by way of media marketing such as internet and teleplay. Hou s revolutionary attitude toward his works leads to his prolonged popularity in literature market. He is not indulged himself in self-satisfaction due to his current fame; instead, this becomes Hou s power of self-improvement to produce more literary works of different styles. As one of the various writers in contemporary literature market, Hou has his own ideals and doesn t just go with the tide.in his opinion, literature isn t just a matter of writing, but more to be an approach of thinking and practice. By the potential influence of popular literature, Hou intends to change the currents of contemporary society. The final aim of this thesis is to provide another different aspect, debating that even popular literature has its own connotation and depth, and Hou s novels is one of the outstanding representatives.
