ENGLISH ABSTRACT Chungsun Hon ; an aboriginal of Ataiyal tribe, living in the Showling Town of Hualien County committed suicide the next day after the Presidential Election in March, 2000. His death somehow reflects some disordered phenomenon and chaos existing in the aboriginal society. The author would like to explore and analyze Mr. Hon's death and therefore expose the difficulties and problems of the aboriginals who have been in longterm the minority and weaker group in our society. The object of the essay are the aboriginals living in the Showling Town of Hualien County. The conclusion is gathered from the consultation with Mr. Hon's relatives and friends about his life and death, 500 lifeanddeath questionnaires with the help of the local officials, and the related official statistics. The author started the fieldwork in person from September 999 to October 2000; witnessing the 92 Great Earthquake and the Presidential Election in year 2000. Both the earthquake and the Election brought great influences on the aboriginal society; some are sweet and warm but mostly are heartbreaking. Taiwan has been receiving different cultures from different people. The vanished native Pinpu tribe, the existing native nine aboriginal tribes, the Han from the mainland China immigrated 400 years ago, and the Netherlanders' and Japanese occupation developed varied civilization on this small island. Mountains, hills, small plains and basins constitute the geographic characteristic of Taiwan. Different tribes are spread on different areas. Geographic isolation helps in preserving the characterful cultural of each tribe. Huwlien County is located in the east part of Taiwan, far away from the highly developed West part, but the sophistication on cultural presentation is far beyond the author's expectation while making the survey. The author was deeply amazed and touched by a lot of people and events that are worth our society paying more attention on them. The aboriginals in the East are known as enthusiastic, active and optimistic. However their songs reveal their anger and powerless against the reality. After months of endeavors, the author finally gets fertile results for the essay, but also feels sorry for the struggles of the local aborignals. The findings of the survey are:
.Showling Town of the Hualien County is a remote country isolated by the mountains. The land is barren and the public construction is far behind other areas in Taiwan. The native residents here are the Ataiyal aboriginals, most of them are farmers and they sometimes do some odd jobs in the near cities. General speaking, their lives are tough; their incomes are highly under the average. Low development and low educational degree make the aboriginals in the economic, political and social level become the weaker group in our society. 2.Most of the productive manpower are employed in big cities. Seniors and children are left at hometown. Children are commonly taken care by the grandparents. Meanwhile, the divorce rate increases rapidly and remarrying is common here. The psychological and personal developments of the young generation would be surely affected by the above factors. This phenomenon deserves our attention and observation. 3.As mentioned above, the aboriginals are limited in the population, education level, economical and political power; it is very hard for them to be involved in, not mentioning to compete with the main stream. They surely have problems in adapting themselves to the Han culture which are different them theirs. To enhance their education level should be the only solution. There are academic promotions specifically settled for the aboriginals; unfortunately the results above the compulsory education are frustrated. Few aboriginals have completed college or above degrees since the Restoration. Unable to enhance the essential of the manpower, the aboriginals are accordingly unable to improve their social status. 4.Religious activities have been playing an important role in the aboriginals' spiritual lives here. The churches of Christ, Catholic, and True Jesus are commonly seen in the villages. The gorgeous construction of churches attract attention and look awkward among the shabby residents houses. Recently the religious fever is fading with the migration of the productive generation. 5.Just like the other cities in Taiwan, in the villages of Showling Town are full of pinlain stands, KTV and restaurants. Is it a kind of civilized development or pollution? One thing is for sure that the mountain villages are no longer clean and simple as they were. 6.Excessive drinking is another serious problem. The aboriginals can drink at any time and any occasion; people drink at home, at the grocery stores, pinlian stands and KTV. Moreover, drunkers could be found in the early
morning lying on the ground. No wonder that aboriginal residents are easier to be troubled with cirrhosis and gout comparing with the 'plain people'; it surely has certain relation with the alcoholic problems. It's been over fifty years since the Restoration. Though the government has been attempting, the aboriginals still the minority and weaker group in political, economical and cultural aspects. The author is very sorry about that. The reasons may be concluded as: minor population, isolated living environments (they were used to be called 'mountain tribes' in general), and totally different cultural backgrounds. The government has the obligation to help them to be extensively accepted and involved in our society. The theme of the essay is to explore and then present the struggles that the aboriginals have been facing so that the government can refer to when developing public polices for the aboriginals.
