Introductory Note to Teachers Jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Trustees of the British Museum, this learning kit has been specially designed for "The Ancient Olympic Games" Exhibition as a supplementary teaching resource for free distribution to primary and secondary schools. The learning kit consists of three parts. This Educational Resources Booklet elaborates on the contents of the exhibition in the light of the studies in history, culture and humanities of the school curriculum. This booklet also explains how the kit can be applied in context of the school curriculum, offers suggestions for planning visits and contains two sets of worksheets - one for primary 4 to 6 students and one for secondary 1 to 3 students. Accompanied by a layout of the exhibition to help teachers plan visits to the museum, the second part is the Exhibition Information Booklet that provides a brief introduction to the exhibition and highlighted exhibits. Focusing on four aspects "Olympic honours", "Olympic Events", "Nude vs. Dressed" and "Horse-related Events at the Olympic Games" the Fun Facts Booklet describes some of the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympic Games. Teachers and educators are encouraged to be flexible in their use of the materials and also to select materials that fit well into classroom learning and cater suitably to the needs of their students. Objectives of the Learning Kit To provide additional resources for teachers and educators. To enrich teachers' and students' knowledge and understanding of the exhibition. To facilitate interaction between exhibition visits and classroom learning. To consolidate the learning experience students gain from visiting the exhibition through proposed extension activities.

第二部份 Part II 03 展覽與學校課程的配合 The Education Kit and the School Curriculum This exhibition showcases many spectacular works of art related to the ancient and modern Olympic Games that fit in well with several different facets of the primary and secondary school curricula. Containing research materials and worksheets, this exhibition educational kit has been tailored to suit the school curriculum. It aims to provide additional useful information for teachers and educators that can enrich teaching in the classroom and facilitate education in the museum.

第三部份 Part III 05 參觀展覽 Planning Your Visit 給老師的提示 How to Get the Most out of Your Visit Interactive learning can help to motivate students' own learning initiatives. Provide sufficient time for the students to explore the "Ancient Olympic Games" Exhibition. Pay attention to the personal and social agendas of your students during pre-visit orientation. Their focus may well be on a famous sporting celebrity or a pair of trendy sports shoes rather than the history and culture of ancient Greece. Integrate the visit with your teaching programme, including pre-visit orientation activities, activities during the visit that maximise the learning experience in the museum, as well as post-visit activities to consolidate what has been learned. All in all, a comprehensive learning plan is the best for students. Teachers and educators are strongly encouraged to visit the exhibition and to complete the worksheets before taking their students. This is an ideal opportunity to modify the prepared materials and to devise activities tailored to your students. 教材套與學校課程的關係 Relationship to the Curriculum Statements for Hong Kong Schools The learning experiences embodied in this exhibition have been developed with reference to the curriculum profiles for Hong Kong primary and secondary schools. For example, the idea of sportsmanship fits in well with the moral and civic education curriculum for primary schools, while ancient Greek and Roman history forms part of the history curriculum for secondary school students.

循序漸進的博物館學習模式 Structured Museum Learning Experience for Students Students will gain the greatest benefits from a visit if it is linked with what they are doing at school. We suggest the following approach: Pre-visit School Activities Conduct preparatory activities and discussions related to the exhibition. Conduct pre-visit orientation: talk with students about the purpose of the visit and listen to their opinions. Encourage students to explore and find out more about sports in the ancient world. Ask students to find myths related to the Olympic Games. Visit to the "The Ancient Olympic Games" Exhibition Conduct orientation relevant exhibition information can be copied and handed out to students to encourage them to use the Exhibition Information Booklet properly. Copy and distribute the worksheets in this booklet to students and encourage them to explore the exhibition at their own pace. Allow students to roam freely; this will reinforce holistic ideas and initiate self-learning opportunities. Divide students into groups at the end of the visit to check their progress and allow them to share their views about the exhibition with each other. Post-visit School Activities Divide students into groups and get them to come up with ideas for the school's sports day. Devise new sporting activities to be added to the Olympics. Discuss the Olympic values and spirits conveyed through the Games. Collect information about the various logos as well as articles related to the Olympic Games, for example, the Olympic anthem, rings, motto, flame and torch.

07 學校奧運日 給老師的提示

A School Olympics Day The school can organise an Olympics Day for students to let them fully enjoy the Olympic spirit and the excitement of this unique event. The suggestions below can also be implemented as separate activities. Teachers should try to tailor learning activities to fit the needs of their students. Chinese Composition: get students to write an article about their favourite Olympic event. English Divide your students into groups and ask each group to write an article reporting on your school's Olympics Day. Collect all the articles at the end and publish your own Olympic Day Newspaper. Mathematics Create statistical result sheets for gold, silver and bronze medals presented at the Olympic Games to find out which country is ranked first in winning the greatest number of gold medals. History Create flags of the countries represented at the Games, discuss their symbolic meanings and what the colours represent. Geography Design a world map highlighting all the Olympic host cities. Humanities Hold group discussions about the meaning and idea of the Olympic spirit. Music Teach the students the Olympic theme songs. Art Design and produce medals and certificates to be awarded to winning athletes. Physical Education Spend two consecutive PE lessons introducing an Olympic sport to the students, teach the students about its history, discipline, rules, equipment, competition format, etc. Teachers are encouraged to use existing resources; for example, bamboo sticks can be used instead of sabres in the fencing competition. Tips to Teachers Launch group activities and invite every student to participate in and enjoy them. Design your Olympics Day to be an educational, challenging and interesting event. Let your students understand the motto "the most important thing is not to win but to take part". Incorporate the Olympic values and the idea of sportsmanship in the activities whenever applicable.
