64 Culture and Education as Sponsored by the Board of Trustees for AIFBG Hsiu-huan Chou * Abstract The Board of Trustees for the Administration of the Indemnity Funds remitted by the British Government, established on April 8th, 1931, was meant to invest for the National Government on construction projects such as rails, electric systems and water conservancy, trying to work further on education and culture projects with the interests earned in the banks. The Board of Trustees for AIFBG did a lot of contributions to the culture as well as education in the National Government. I would like to cite some examples: (1) Education: They held 9 Scholarship Examinations of the Board to England, thereafter training up as many as 193 professionals in various fields. (2) Sponsorship to education/culture: During the period of second world war, many universities and research institutes were partly subsidized by the Board, helping to settle wandering research scholars and professors. A lot of antiques and ancient volumes were collected and properly stored so that these precious materials did not have to be sold to foreign countries. The Board in conformity to the national policy also made great contributions in the modernization of the impoverished Northwestern areas. K.T. Li( ), who once accepted the financial sponsorship from the Board said: "Due to positive influence caused by the educational and cultural policy of The Board of Trustees for AIFBG, it turns out to be a fashion to go to England for further study. The number of the students who would like to study in England has been greatly on the rise." Had it not been for the wars, which caused the failure of the operational system of returning good interests, The Board of Trustees for AIFBG with the solid ability in planning and rendering implementation of projects, would have made a lot more contributions to various types of cultural and educational activities.
