Workshop Presenter Biographies Yong Zhao is an internationally known scholar, author, and speaker. His works focus on the implications of globalization and technology on education. He has designed schools that cultivate global competence, developed computer games for language learning, and founded research and development institutions to explore innovative education models. He has published over 100 articles and 20 books, and was named one of the 2012 ten most by the Tech & Learn Magazine. He is an elected fellow of the International Academy for Education. His latest book World Class Learners has won several awards including the Society of Professors of Education Book Award (2013), Association of Education Distinguished Achievement Award in Education Leadership (2013). He currently serves as the Presidential Chair and Director of the Institute for Global and Online Education in the College of Education, University of Oregon, where he is also a Professor in the Department of Educational Measurement, Policy, and Leadership. He received his B.A. in English Language Education from Sichuan Institute of Foreign Languages in Chongqing, China in 1986. After teaching English in China for six visiting scholar in 1992. He then began his graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1993. He received his A.M. in Education in 1994 and Ph.D. in 1996. He joined the faculty at MSU in 1996 after working as the Language Center Coordinator at Willamette University and a language specialist at Hamilton College. Yong Zhao 25

Helena Curtain 26 Helena Curtain, University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee (Emerita), is the author of numerous publications dealing with language instruction and the winner of many awards for her service to the language teaching profession. She has served as a speaker, consultant, and visiting professor throughout the USA and in 31 countries. She is an expert on language teaching methodology, curriculum development, and bilingual education. Dr. Curtain directed the English as a Second Language and World Language teacher preparation programs at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for ten years. Previously she coordinated the foreign language and ESL programs grades K-12 in the Milwaukee Public Schools, and taught at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. In the Milwaukee Public Schools she started three full immersion programs in German, Spanish and French and was one of the pioneers of the immersion movement in the United States.

Jennifer Perkins Jennifer Perkins has been educating children and adults for over three decades in Nashville, Tennessee. Her experience began in Special Education with students of varying exceptionalities. Some of her students had emotional,intellectual or behavioral problems while others were exceptionally gifted. For twenty years she educated students who were high achievers and considered talented and gifted. These years prepared her for mentoring many novice teachers and eventually brought her to the university level. M Vanderbilt University, formerly George Peabody College for Teachers, where she received a B.S. in Elementary Education and Special Education. She continued her education at Middle Tennessee State University earning a M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision. Since Ms. Perkins is a life-long learner, she furthered her education with thirty hours of credit beyond M brought her half-way around the world from her home to China. While at ISQ she is developing the Academic Services department to better serve students with learning needs. When a student is referred to the AS department, she will listen to the teachers and parents, as well as observe the student before determining the type of services that are needed. Sometimes students only need temporary assistance; other times interventions and accommodations are coordinated with the teachers. When individual instruction is needed, time is made available in 27

Lien Yujen 28 Lien Yujen is a lecturer at the Department of Chinese Literature and Language, National Taitung University, Taiwan. Also, he is a Ph.D. student in the Graduate Institute of Information and Computer Education at National Taiwan Normal University, with a focus on the ICT integration training model for teachers of Chinese as a Foreign/Second language. He has 9-years experience of Chinese Learning and Teaching ICT integration training worldwide as well as development of digital materials to serve overseas Chinese teachers. Due to his work experiences, educational background and personal interests, Yujen is familiar with a large spectrum of educational tools, websites, services, software and hardware in Chinese language teaching. As a college teacher and researcher, his primary research interest is emerging technologies, new forms of devices and social media in Chinese language education, especially the instructional design with technology-supported curriculum. Now, he is using mobile devices and emerging technologies to interact with Chinese language teachers and learners worldwide.
