46 A Study on Deaf-school Teachers Simultaneous Communication Instrucation in Taiwan Min-Hua Hsing Department of Special Education, National Tainan Teachers College Abstract The aims of this study are to explore teachers perceptions on applying simultaneous communication (SC) mode in their instruction, and to analyze teachers SC behaviors. Twenty-one volunteer teachers in three public deaf schools for the deaf in Taiwan were chosen as interview subjects. After the interview, 17 of them were video recorded twice for their instructional behaviors. Results showed that total communication or SC is the main communication policy in deaf schools; effective SC factors contain vivid facial expressions and body movement, eye contact, appropriate speed, a match between speech and sign, clear lip movement, and signing according to meaning signing according to meaning or words. Mean of the teachers sign-to-speech ratio is 74%, semantic intact ratio is 81%. As for the consistency of utterance messages between teachers speech and sign channels, mean of the exact equivalence is 25%. As for teachers morphemes comparison between speech and sign, mismatch types are mainly deletions and errors. The ratio of teachers ungrammatical sign channel messages ranged from 4% to 43%, with a mean of 17%. Some assumption-based conclusions and suggestions were made.
