National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Journal of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences 2016, 12(4), 319-340 A CASE STUDY OF A CONGENITALLY BLIND STUDENT S LEARNING CHINESE RECOGNITION AND INPUT INTO A COMPUTER USING BOSHIAMY METHOD Jan-Li Wang 1 Cin-Wei Huang 2 Shelley Shwu-Ching Young 2 Chien-Huey Chang 3 1 National Center for High-Performance Computing, National Applied Research Laboratory 2 Institute of Learning Sciences and Technology, National Tsing Hua University 3 Department of Special Education, National Taiwan Normal University ABSTRACT A case study was investigated on a congenitally blind student in Grade 1 of elementary school in learning Chinese character input into a computer using the Boshiamy method. A series of experimental courses were conducted for the subject to examine the difficulties faced during the learning period. Interviews with the subject, accompanying learner (mother of subject) were also carried out after the end of the courses to collect their viewpoints. It was found that the subject faced many difficulties in typing with Boshiamy Input Method at the beginning, but after about six months, the subject has been able to gain a preliminary understanding of basic Chinese characters and typing skill. In addition, the interviews also showed that learner motivation also increased. Summary of the research results, the learner s willingness to learn, as well as the attitude of parents are critical factors.
