JPA Journal of Public Administration Vol. 4 No. 4 2011 SYMPOSIUM Research Methodology Introduction Yanling He 1 Between Paradigm and Empirical Research How We Approach Social Science Inquires Yingfang Chen 5 Abstract One of the most important issues of social science research is how to discover the real substance of the knowledge avoiding the apparent gap between paradigm and empirical research. Particularly regarding social science research in China there has been a tendency to ignore the distinction between western research paradigms and Chinese social studies. It is very important to reach a common ground that encompasses western and Chinese knowledge. Social scientists assume multiple roles in social studies and should go beyond the dichotomy between paradigm and empirical research to establish valid social research methodology. The ability to recognize and solve real social problems will help improve social science research in China.
