Travel, Exoticism and Archaism: Peng Hui in Kubo Tenzui's Chinese Poetry Lee Chia-Yu Associate Professor, Language and Literature Education Department, National Taipei University of Education Abstract This article is to investigate how the Japanese Sinologist Kubo Tenzui (1875-1934) imagined and portrayed Peng Hui in his work - Peng Hui Travelogue. Experientially speaking, Peng Hui is a real space. However, in his work, he recreated the space (the scenery of Peng Hui) in terms of his own sights and viewpoints. During his journey there, Mr. Kubo took down his routes and draw down the pictures of Peng Hui. Thus, we can now see his very distinct description of Peng Hui. In this study, the author aimed to explore why Kubo Tenzui traveled Peng Hui, how the landscape transferred after the Japanese reign as well as how the Sinologist viewed this Southern island. All the depiction is based on Kubo Tenzui s writing in 1932. Keywords: Chinese Poetry, Japanese Sinologist, Kubo Tenzui, Peng-Hue's Travelogue, Peng-Hue Writing 118
