75 University Subject Evaluation Based on the International Academic Discourse Vision Taking 1387 World Universities in Chemistry Subject for Example WANG Xing Graduate School of Education Shanghai Jiao Tong University Shanghai 200240 Abstract In recent years the voice from Chinese academia to enhance the international academic discourse of China has gotten higher and higher. Editorial board members of international academic journals control the international academic discourse and play an important role in the university discipline construction. Using a sample of 1387 universities having editorial board members in 396 SCI journals of chemistry subject the present study builds a subject ranking in chemistry based on the international academic discourse vision and discusses the characteristics of this ranking. The results show that there is a certain gap between top Chinese universities and first - class foreign universities in chemistry the ranking based on editorial board members are positively and significantly related to the subject comprehensive ranking number of articles total number of citations and h - index respectively but their correlation level is different. High-performing students favor Project 985 universities located in economically developed areas. Competition for top students is intense among those universities and the enrollment quality is associated with the comprehensive strength and type of a university. The enrollment quality of different Project 985 universities displays some volatility and changes in the distribution of students enrolled from specific provinces are in general consistent with changes in the comprehensive nationwide ranking of student performance despite swings a- mong a few universities.
