I strengthening self-management and establishing comprehensive source tracing and tracking systems to ensure food safety, said Vice Economics Minister Cho Shih-chao at the show s opening ceremony, yesterday. The mega show, which combines food, FoodTech and Pharmatech, Taiwan Horeca, packing and Halal Taiwan, is the biggest in size compared with shows in past years. More than 1,642 businesses are presenting their products at more than 3,920 booths. It offers a great opportunity to showcase Taiwan s quality food to the world. A designated food tracing area has been Establish Source Tracing and Tracking Systems The government values food safety very much, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) has launched a new program that will assist local companies in set up in the show with the aim of helping Taiwan s food companies connect with the world. Source control and management has been the focus of international food companies. Taiwanese firms must do the same in order to establish Taiwan as kingdom of safe and tasty food, Cho said. Taiwan s Booming Food Industry Advances in food-processing technology and improvements in agricultural products have facilitated progress in other businesses in the hospitality industry like hotels and restaurants. The booming development in the food supply chain renders one of the few tertiary industries that are rooted in Taiwan, Cho added. Peter W.J. Huang, president and CEO of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, said Food Taipei is the only trade show in Asia that showcases the whole food supply chain. The five big draws of the show, according to Huang, are the record number of participating nations, the first ever international wine section, 1-on-1 procurement meetings to connect buyers and sellers, cuttingedge food-processing equipment, and Halal Taiwan. Emphasis on Food Safety Countries around the world now place great importance on food safety. It is a focus of the World Health Organization this year. There are various food safety sections in the food show. Among them is a designated food safety area at the Taiwan Pavilion, which serves as a testimony for Taiwan s determination to establish a comprehensive monitoring system to ensure food safety, said Minister without Portfolio Yeh Shin-cheng. 2 TAITRA National Pavilions Taiwan Pavilion Find your Five Stars Quality Food at the Taiwan Pavilion Responding to a proposal by the Offi ce of Food Safety, Executive Yuan, the Taiwan Pavilion has been organized around the theme Five Stars Quality Food, promoting government policies on food safety management to national and international buyers, consumers and media. Other than presenting new policies and implementation, a series of lectures on food safety is being given on the pavilion s main stage area every day during the expo, allowing both domestic and international buyers as well as consumers to better understand the quality control of Taiwanese agriculture and further rest easy with a sense of security. In addition, visitors are able to see the top 10 innovative products that have undergone two phases of strict selection. A total of 99 exhibitors selected by the Council of Agriculture are showcasing their products at the pavilion, which is organized into fi ve categories agricultural produce, fi shery produce, livestock produce, forestry products and prepared foods. In the area of agricultural produce, you can fi nd selected rice, tea vegetables, fruit and processed products; in fi shery produce, examine quality tuna, mullet roe, milk fi sh, grouper, variously colored abalone and more; meat, dairy and a variety of related processed products can be found in the livestock section while beverages, products made via bamboo charcoal fi ltering as well as environmental products can be seen in the forestry products area. Last but not least, the prepared food area features frozen food, processed seafood and preserved fruits. Moreover, the Taiwan Frozen Meat Packers Association and Taiwan Frozen Seafood Industries Association are also participating in the grand event along with the Taiwan Pavilion. With the oil scandals over the past few years, many people have grown suspicious of oil companies. The Malaysia Pavilion, however, promises no problems regarding oil safety whatsoever. In fact, Malaysia currently supplies 39 percent of the world s palm oil production, and 27 percent of the world s total production and exports of all oil products. Innovation Technology and Application for Packaging Materials Seminar From 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. today, TAITRA and the Plastics Industry Development Center (PIDC) will host an Innovation Technology and Application for Packaging Materials Seminar in Room 5, on the second fl oor of TWTC Hall 1. Speakers will present discussions on various industry-related topics. First, there will be a 40- minute discussion on the Application of Chromism Materials for Packaging presented by Luo Guo-shu, division director of PIDC Materials Technology. Then, from 1:40 p.m. to 2:20 p.m., Zhan Yi-chi, division director of PIDC Processing Technology, will head a discussion on Easy Open Film for Food Packaging. Afterwards, Zheng Kai Yuan, division research commissioner at PIDC Materials Technology, will talk about Development and Application of a Newly Produced Lug-cap with the Concept of PVC-free Design. Following a 10-minute break, the event will continue with a discussion on the creation of packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables presented by Dr. Tong Qi-zhe and Dr. Zeng Xiang-rong from PIDC s Processing Technology division. Last but not least, Division Director Chen Ming-kun of PIDC s Detection Technologies Branch will give a Safety Assessment of Plastics Packaging discussion followed by a 10-minute concluding discussion. Asia s Super 5-in-1 Food Expo Procurement Meetings The 2015 Asia s Super 5-in-1 Food Expo Procurement Meetings are also being held at TWTC Nangang Conference Room 504 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today, the second day of the Food Exposition. These procurement meetings will be a great opportunity for businesses to build connections, as they will provide an invaluable platform for both buyers and exhibitors to discuss their ideas and fi nd potential partners to advance their businesses and industries. The meetings will also be a chance to help local suppliers expand their business, and most exhibitors will be presenting new products and machinery. As a result, the meetings will be a benefi cial experience to all participants. Many of them are looking for business opportunities in Taiwan, while others are searching for interesting foods or machinery to take back to their home countries. Dressed in traditional African clothing, Cyprien Velegda, managing director of Groupe Velegda Sarl from Burkina Faso, is all smiles and upbeat about his visit. We mainly produce sesame seeds in Africa, so we re looking for processing machinery to help our work, Velegda said, Since we have abundant sesame seeds in Africa, we also hope to fi nd buyers in Taiwan as well. Hamza Kone of Ham-Co, also hailing from Burkina Faso and accompanying Velegda, is currently looking for plastics-packaging machines for his company. Tim Long, from Indiana, is vice president of sales and distribution at Tiger Soybeans. He happily boasted that the premium soybeans are non-gmo, and high in protein. Long is looking for buyers to import Tiger Soybeans into Asia. Long, who visited the food show last year has already found buyers, and he is happily re-visiting the big show again in hopes of fi nding more potential buyers. From the perspective of a seasoned visitor of many food expos world-wide, Long complimented on how well organized the show here is in Taiwan. Vanessa Lim Sosmena, a fi rst-time visitor to Taiwan who manages a coffee shop in the Philippines, is open to different possibilities. We re not really looking for anything specifi c, but we want to fi nd new products we can bring and introduce them back home. Harikishin and Yasmin Jadwani from New Delhi, owners of Ahimsa Food, are looking for processing machines to produce their vegetarian snacks. He is currently looking for potential buyers to enter the Asian market. Siva Vallipuram and his wife have now visited the show four times. Vallipuram s company, Rams, is a Sydney-based Sri Lankan-Indian food company. We are looking for new machinery, specifically food processing machines, advanced technology, and see how the machines can be incorporated into our business. Qadir Mirza of Shimla Foods in Canada, whose company produces dumpling snacks, is a frequent buyer of food processing machinery in Taiwan, and has been doing so for 14 years. Mirza has seen 依然強而有力 vast improvements in Taiwan s bakery machinery. He brought along Michael Davidson, a firsttime attendee from Global Pantry Inc., who is looking for production machines as well. Robert Tan from Malaysia has been to the Food Expo many times already. As a Malaysian distributor that specializes in bakery equipment, Tan s company, Murni Machinery Sdn. Bhd., introduces bakery-related machinery from around the world to Malaysia. This will be his second year attending this event and so far, he has enjoyed his time here. Today I met with Charmy, he said. If I have a chance, I will export their shaved ice from Taiwan to Japan.
