There will be summer homework prior to beginning the course. In doing so, students will expand their artistic skills analytically, conceptually, and technically and will further develop their visual arts vocabulary. Students will be using hand building and throwing techniques, and/or a combination of these methods to produce works in clay. 6 This class will explore a variety of mixed media art forms and techniques from a 2 D Design, 3 D Design and Drawing & Painting basis while expanding on the Elements of Art & Principles of Design learned in previous art courses. Throughout the first semester, the emphasis of the class will be drawing from observation and composition studies. Students will also keep a sketchbook or a visual/verbal journal throughout the year. During the second semester students will transition to painting. It consists of four major units: Mass media and its influence, Technology and literature, Culture diversity and academic studies, Chinese classics and the embedded values. Through the learning, students will be able to realize how mass media magnifies the influence of language; to see how language, technology and life are interrelated. And base on that, students will learn and practice academic research methods in order to investigate the change of contemporary Chinese society; and further the observation through the study of opportunities and risks on traditional industry transformation. By studying prose, students are able to analyze different thoughts and rhetorics in articles, and understand how to build up argument in various of formats, based on famous proses of different time periods. Through studying novels and dramas of various kinds, students are expected to make thematic literary commentaries on both contextual details and rhetorical techniques. 8

10 This course addresses reading fiction and nonfiction, writing a variety of texts, speaking, listening, and grammar. Students will independently read throughout the entire year in addition to reading novels and nonfiction texts in class while practicing reading and thinking strategies in order to improve comprehension. Students will use the writing process to write narrative, expository, and persuasive texts. In addition, research skills will be taught and assessed during the persuasive writing unit. Using the writing process will allow students to improve their grammar and mechanics. Through a variety of written, oral, movement, and performance based activities, students will explore, analyze, and create using the many elements of music. In Grade 9 Choir, students develop healthy breathing and singing techniques as they study a variety of choir repertoire and experience singing in harmony. They are also introduced to the fundamentals of independent sight singing. Each student will learn to read music including melodies, rhythms, chords in treble and bass clef. Guitar students will be responsible for completing a series of technical skills and will demonstrate a developing and working knowledge of basic music theory. Students will learn Classical Guitar posture, hand position, strumming and technique, but will also explore folk, rock and jazz styles. The class is structured in a differentiated group format and will allow students to achieve the highest level of proficiency possible during the semester. Group performances are possible throughout the semester. No prerequisites, but students should provide their own guitar.
