In order to systematically summarize the basic experiences and great achievements and promote the scientific development of soil and water conservation work based on the achievements of " Analysis of Soil and Water Conservation Benefits of the Yellow River Management for 50 years" this study deeply investigated and attempted to find out the actual situation with the methods of combining statistical survey and typical analysis macro and micro research. The benefits of soil and water conservation in the past 20 years were analyzed and evaluated comprehensively from the economic social and ecological aspects. The results show that the national and provincial accumulative investments in soil and water conservation have reached billion yuan the effective preserved area of soil and water conservation measures is thousand km 2 the number of warping dams has reached 58.4 thousand and the accumulative soil conservation amount is up to billion tons by the end of According to the price in 2015 the accumulative achieved economic benefit is up to 14.2 trillion yuan including 11.8 trillion yuan of direct economic benefit. Water and soil conservation measures has effectively contained water loss and soil erosion reduced the sediment loads into the Yellow River and the sediment deposition in the downstream channel bed improved the ecological environment increased the agricultural production and income of farmers and significantly promoted the regional social economic development. Then three pivoting themes were i- dentified in research including co-adaptation engineering mechanisms between river regime stability at small and medium-sized flow and flooding for extreme flood enhancing in capacity of sediment transport in channel in the Lower Yellow River at normal flows methods for flooding space and a sustainable system for governing overbank broad floodplains. Five areas were then highlighted and discussed as a possible focus for future research 1 flood conditions and disaster scenes in future 2 trends in the channel and floodplains and range of the channel migration 3 flux threshold for maintaining sediment delivery in the channel and potential of reservoirs for regulating the water and sediment in the channel 4 stability controlling and leading the river regime and enhancing in transport ability in the channel 5 constraints in the floodplain functions and its sustainable control system and 6 support systems for integrated control and optimum schedule for the river. Finally it reported recent progresses made in our group in river fundamental theory predicted methods for erosion and deposition and efficiency of sediment transport design and planning for realigning and leading lines and control plan in the Lower Yellow River.
