13 I have been working with porcelain by slab building for these 5,6 years. Somehow I felt a kind of limit in forming with this technique, so I decided to make by coiling, with iron rich stone ware. One day, I saw two cups inverted one on the top of the others. This silhouette was the beginning of imagination. When coiling,i could imagine various forms which continues from present shape. It was such fun to work following spontaneous images, making without prepared plans. 011

14 TOPFERMARKT Gmunden 2018/8/24~28 My teapot, on poster On 2018, TOPFERMARKT Gmunden celebrated 30 year anniversary and Japan was invited as the guest country. Six Japanese artists exhibited at Seeschloss Ort castle, besides participating the market. I placed 20 porcelain bowls Moon Light, with black-clay vessel, which looks like tower. It was impressive to see how my works look in historical architecture, in natural light. 012

16 There is Double layers" as one of the features of my medal. This is the unique one which has no other examples. It's the big feature of medal that there are Obverse and Reverse". My Double layers" made them developed from "Obverse and Reverse". Two faces can be appreciated at the same time by a medal of Double layers" however usually both faces are appreciated while turning a obverse of a medal and the reverse over. The spatiotemporal difference each expresses by seeing two faces at the same time and the relation of the matter are emphasized. 014

I use that as the part of the wax mold, bind with gypsum and bake it up by a kiln.

I don't take a mold and I don't model plant. Plant is that itself is exchanged for metal.

21 Lampranthus spectabilis Many the same medals are usually made but I make each one medal. That has a physical reason. The plants on my medal are collected from my garden or roadside. I use that as the part of the wax mold, bind with gypsum and bake it up by a kiln. Plants will burn with wax and be space. And that waits the metal which melted to be poured. I don't take a mold and I don't model plant. Plant is that itself is exchanged for metal. That will be the part of the medal as the proof that I was in its location then. Because itself is exchanged for metal, Plant can't reprint. It s only one. 019

My name is Tetsuya Tanaka. I come from SHIGARAKI, Japan. Today, I will give a presentation on my work which is ceramic works as contemporary art. My first series are QOO series.

Though these works look like genuine metallic products, the main material is ceramics and only a few parts are real metal. This is (QOO)-KINMIRAI Nostalgia. This work is over 3 Meter.

23 My name is Tetsuya Tanaka. I come from SHIGARAKI, Japan. Today, I will give a presentation on my work which is ceramic works as contemporary art. My first series are QOO series. This name from Chinese or Japanese character. This means sky or empty. For over ten years I am making ceramic works that were combined with metal. Though these works look like genuine metallic products, the main material is ceramics and only a few parts are real metal. This is (QOO)-KINMIRAI Nostalgia. This work is over 3 Meter. I exhibited it at BIWAKO biennale that international contemporary art biennale. I exhibited in old Japanese house. Recently in Japan, exhibiting contemporary art pieces in traditional space become trend. I feel contemporary art pieces are suitable to Japanese traditional space. Japanese traditional architecture is based on ZEN spirit. There is no decoration. Only there is comfortable space made of natural things such as light, wind, and so on. ZEN spirit is similar to concept of minimal art that fashioned at 20 century in U.S.A. and Europe. Maybe it is reason I feel so. This is one of Thinking on the Wall series. Thinking on the Wall series combine ceramic and metal thing also. This part is motor head of grinder. Sometimes I use scrap things. 022

These are tea wares. I am making functional art pieces also. Many Japanese ceramic artists are making fine art piece and functional art pieces both.

In the West, art is considered to be higher than craft. In Japan, KOUGEI and arts is the same, sometimes the KOUGEI is higher than art.

24 These are tea wares. I am making functional art pieces also. Many Japanese ceramic artists are making fine art piece and functional art pieces both. There is almost no border between arts and crafts in Japanese ceramic arts. Japanese craft is called "KOUGEI". KOUGEI is slightly different from Western craft. In the West, art is considered to be higher than craft. In Japan, KOUGEI and arts is the same, sometimes the KOUGEI is higher than art. Please imagine sometimes one tea bowl is traded at 30 thousands euro. These tea bowls are not antique. Japanese contemporary ceramic art is growing from this KOUGEI. This is a flower vase. Japanese post war modern ceramic artists developed ceramic sculpture from functional objects like flower vase. In our generation, there are ceramic sculptures already. Sometimes I put sculptural element back into functional objects. 023

For example vessel for sounds, vessel for time, vessel for light or rays. This is HIBIKI vessel for sounds.

25 Next are recent works. I am trying approach to contemporary art from ceramic art. We as a potter, make vessels. I am making vessels for invisible or things without shapes and volume. For example vessel for sounds, vessel for time, vessel for light or rays. This is HIBIKI vessel for sounds. If you stand in front of this work, you can hear outside sounds from works inside. This is KAGAYAKI. KAGAYAKI is vessel of lights or rays. I made KAGAYAKI body by translucent clay. I illuminated it with LED light from inside. 024

I exhibited these in 12 meter container.

26 This is installation work. I exhibited it at Kobe biennale. Kobe is a big port town. There are so many containers for shipping. I exhibited these in 12 meter container. This is KAGAYAKI Vessel of light. I exhibited this work at Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale 2015 in Korea. 025

I am challenging to create my works with the aim of the fusion of KOUGEI art and contemporary art.

27 This is wall work of KAGAYAKI. This works image from KATANA sword. My work is a Contemporary art and also KOUGEI craft. I have tried to create artworks by the new ceramic technique or idea developed from the basic and traditional way of KOUGEI. I am challenging to create my works with the aim of the fusion of KOUGEI art and contemporary art. I hope to be an artist who will expand a new style or area with possibility of my pursuit for this fusion and will greatly contribute to the ceramic culture. 026
