32 SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES Bimonthly Vol November 2012 PAPER Applying Theories of the Middle Range to Chinese Historical Studies Yang Nianqun 1 Abstract Theories of the middle range put forward by American sociologist Robert K. Merton have been applied not only in sociological studies but also in other fields especially in historical studies in recent years due to the progress of interdisciplinary research. This paper firstly discusses the value of middle range fundamentals and its limitations to historians. Then the author points out that there are plenty cases of American sinologists putting middle range theories in their researches of Chinese history and culture and both the advantages and disadvantages of this tendency should be respected. The author finally explores how to use the important elements of middle range theories from China s traditional conception of humanities and integrate them into historical researches in the age of interdisciplinary study. Based on the efforts of the history of social thoughts this paper tries to re-interpret the Freudian concept neurosis from sociological perspective. Freud s works on this concept have already shown its own sociological nature. However Freud s psychoanalytical theory couldn t develop a theoretical interpretation on modern society. This is why we still need the traditions of both Marxism and Existential Phenomenology to dig in /out the modern meaning of this Freudian conception. 33 Abstract This paper is a fundamental research on stratification system /schema. In the existing literature power or authority is a rarely used variable in the empirical research of stratification and researchers seldom describe the structural features of social power due to the lack of consistent measurement method of testing hypothesis on power distribution. Given the deficiency of empirical studies on social stratification we construct an authority stratum system based on the direct measurement of work situation and organizational authority under the principle of power-domination relationship. The authors reveal the nature of the power-domination relationship among different social positions through analyzing the proxy variables of this stratum system. Finally the paper tests the construction validity of the authoritybased stratum system from four dimensions socioeconomic status employment conditions subjective identity of strata status and life style. From Ownership to Citizenship Political participation in a community of middle-class migrants Xiong Yihan 77 Abstract Based on a case study in suburban Shanghai this paper explores the following questions what are the characteristics of homeowners political participation in the middle-class migrant community How has hukou affected their political participation Is it possible that middle-class migrants wealth challenges the restrictions on civic engagement imposed by the hukou system The results show that 1 in rural-urban fringe zone the political participation of middle class to a great extent is due to the low-lying land effect of public service 2 age rather than hukou is the most important dividing line for both locals and migrants the aged prefer engaging public affairs via neighborhood committee while the young tends to affect public policy through the internet 3 the political participation of middle class is characterized by homeowner activism centered around homeowners well-being such as property management communal facilities public service etc 4 in order to protect their well-being the aged homeowners apply the strategy of rightful resistance base on community with less leeway this strategy always ends with failure however the young homeowners adopt the more compromising alliance strategy with the assistance of internet and finally establish the dialogue mechanism between the government and internet users 5 the young launch a movement called elect a neighbor to be your representative which means the expansion of their appeal from homeowners well-being to civil rights.
