25 Abstract This paper is a fundamental research on stratification system / schema. In the existing literaturepower or authority is a rarely used variable in the empirical research of stratificationand researchers seldom describe the structural features of social power due to the lack of consistent measurement method of testing hypothesis on power distribution. Given the deficiency of empirical studies on social stratificationwe construct an authority stratum system based on the direct measurement of work situation and organizational authority under the principle of power-domination relationship. The authors reveal the nature of the power-domination relationship among different social positions through analyzing the proxy variables of this stratum system. Finally the paper tests the construction validity of the authoritybased stratum system from four dimensions socioeconomic statusemployment conditionssubjective identity of strata statusand life style. From Ownership to Citizenship Political participation in a community of middle-class migrants Xiong Yihan 77 Abstract Based on a case study in suburban Shanghaithis paper explores the following questions what are the characteristics of homeowners political participation in the middle-class migrant community How has hukou affected their political participation Is it possible that middle-class migrants wealth challenges the restrictions on civic engagement imposed by the hukou system The results show that 1 in rural-urban fringe zonethe political participation of middle class to a great extent is due to the low-lying land effect of public service 2 age rather than hukou is the most important dividing line for both locals and migrantsthe aged prefer engaging public affairs via neighborhood committeewhile the young tends to affect public policy through the internet 3 the political participation of middle class is characterized by homeowner activism centered around homeowners well-being such as property managementcommunal facilitiespublic service etc 4 in order to protect their well-being the aged homeowners apply the strategy of rightful resistance base on communitywith less leeway this strategy always ends with failure howeverthe young homeowners adopt the more compromising alliance strategy with the assistance of internetand finally establish the dialogue mechanism between the government and internet users 5 the young launch a movement called elect a neighbor to be your representative which means the expansion of their appeal from homeowners well-being to civil rights.
