23 6 07 Metternich and the Ottoman Reform Movement Miroslav ediv translated by Li Ning reviewed by W ang Sanyi Abstract The goal of the paper is to illuminate Metternich's attitude towards possibilities of reform in the Ottoman Empire and the reasons for his interest and practical steps taken in this matter. The paper attempts to provide an accurate account of an important but until now entirely ignored aspect of Metternich's diplomacy and offer further proof that Metternich was not the benighted reactionary depicted in the nineteenth-century historiography but a conservative keenly aware that the conservative order could survive only if reformed so as to adapt it to the realities of a post-revolutionary age. Lawrence joined the military activities of the Arab Revolt against their Turkish rulers and supported the Arab cause of independence following the defeat the Ottoman Empire. He had then integrated totally into the Arab society and thus been known as Lawrence of A- rabia. Historians interpret Lawrence's role in the Middle East differently. This article is to analyze Lawrence's position in Arab-Zionist history through the correspondences conference minutes and memoirs etc. The author holds that Lawrence encouraged Jews' immigration into Palestine took positive attitude towards the efforts that Jews had done in helping with the economic and social development in Palestine meanwhile he devoted himself to the peace talk between the Arabs and the Jews and supported the coexistence of both in Palestine therefore he is pro-zionism.
