27 Using Emptiness to Explain theexposition and Argumentation of Lao Zi Department of Language Education, National Tainan University Abstract Explaining Lao Zi by Buddhist thinking is an important phenomenon in the history of Buddhist thinking. It is especially common to see people explain Lao Zi by emptiness. This paper employs the works of Tang Dynasty, including Xuan-Ying Cheng s Topical and Preface Secrets and Meanings of Dao De Jing (Way Power Book) and Li Rong s Interpretations of Lao Zi, Lin Xi-Yi s Verbal Interpretation of Lao Zi at the Study, and Ge Chang-Geng s Precious Chapters of Dao De, the works of Ming Dynasty, including Lu Xi-Xing s Overview of Lao Zi and Dao De Jing and Tao Wang-Ling s Explaining Lao, and a work of Qing Dynasty, Explaining the Meanings of Dao De Jing by Lu Yan edited by Mao Mu-Yuan, and also the works of the end of Zing Dynasty and the early years of the Republic of China, Zhang Chun-Yi s General Elucidation of Lao Zi and Ma Yi-Fu s Interpretations of Lao Zi. All of these are the representative works of explaining Lao Zi by emptiness. In the aspect of explaining Lao Zi by emptiness, this summarizes the contents into four kinds: (1) Using emptiness to explain the argumentations of Dao in Lao Zi; (2) Using emptiness to explain the argumentations of phenomenology in Lao Zi; (3) Using emptiness to explain the argumentations of accomplishments in Lao Zi; and (4) Using emptiness to explain the argumentations of politics in Lao Zi. In fact it is a kind of academic creation to employ the thinking of Buddhism s emptiness to explain the argumentations of Lao Zi.
