Speakers The Coming Transformation of Residency Training Modern residency training is arguably the mostt effective andd sophisticated in the history of the profession. So why then are major changes in training t coming? This session will describe how research and trends in patient safety, education, health outcomes, and sociodemographics are driving a transformation of how we prepare thee next generation of physicians. Dr. Jason R. Frank Dr. Jason R. Frank is a clinician-educator with a focus on all aspects of health profession training systems. He currently holds roles of the Director, Specialty Education, Strategy and Standards in the Office of Specialty Education at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the Director of Educational Research & Development in the Department of Emergency Medicine, University of Ottawa. An associatee professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty F of Medicine, he is cross-appointec ed to the Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa and the Department of Graduate Studies, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Entrustable professional activities and a entrustment decision-making as assessment Using entrustable professional activities (EPAs) in medical education was suggested in 2007 to bridge a gap betweenn the theory of using competencies andd the everydayy practice of clinical health care. c The concept of EPAs has since drawn d much attention among postgraduate and undergraduate programs, notably in North America. This presentation will elaboratee on its principles and practicalities, to promote a common understanding of what EPAs are and how they can best be used for curriculum development, teaching and assessment in the clinical workplace. A special focus will be EPAs-based assessment a of medical trainees. Prof. Olle ten Cate Th.J. (Olle) ten Cate is director of the Centerr for Research h and Development of Education, University Medical Center Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has a background of undergraduate medical training in the 1970s and a subsequent career in i medical education development and research, first at the Universityy of Amsterdam, since 19999 as a Professor of Medical Education at Utrecht University. He received a PhD degree in social sciences in 1986. He has extensive experience in medical education development and research, with 250+ publications and 300+ presentations, and has mentored many graduate students in medical educationn research. He served as thee president of the Netherlands Association for Medical Education from 2006 to 2012 and holds a positionn as adjunct professor of medicine at the University off California San Francisco since 2012.
Prof. Ken N. Kuo The prospect off residency training inn Taiwan The post graduate education in medicine is an important step to provide quality physicians in the clinical care and promote the health of the people. In Taiwan, since establishment of medical specialty by Department of Health in 1966, DOH had empowered all specialty societies to manage the accreditation and certification of 23 medical specialties. For years, the specialty has been emphasizing on the manpower of teachers to determine the slot allocation. Since 3 years ago the Ministry of Health and Welfare has been promoting the quality of residency training by forming Residency Review Committee (RRC). The guideline of each specialty was rewritten according to the general guideline established by RRC emphasizing the quality and outcome of the training in specific timee frame. We use 6 competencies established by US ACGME as a guide in accrediting thee program and residency training quality. In addition all the due processes are included. The continue evolution will strengthen the training quality of a physician in Taiwan. From Theory too Practice: Implementation of Competency-based Training Dr. Fremen Chihchen Chou The emerging e concept of Competency-based Training is promising for accountable residency training. The ongoing change and effort on residency training reform r will become a challenge rather than an opportunity without a clear modell for implementation. This session will describe a model for implementation of Competency-based Training based on the four-years experience of Taiwan Society of Emergency Medicine. It will cover the issues from achieving consensus within the specialty society, developing specialty competence, accreditation for programs and assessments forr trainee. Fremen Chihchen Chou, M.D., is Physician Educator, Department of Education, China Medical University Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine (EM),( China Medical University (CMU). He is also the recipient off the 2009 Award for Excellence in Medical Education at CMU and the 2012 Award for Excellence of Teaching inn the affiliated hospital. Dr. Chou received his M.D. in 2001 from CMU and a is currently a Ph. D. candidate in e-learning and science education, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Dr. Chou also serves as Chair of Taiwan EM Modell and Milestones Task Force, Taiwan Society of Emergency Medicine. He has devoted himself to faculty development of Interprofessional Education, Medical Simulation, e-learning and Competency-based Medical Education countrywide and held h more than 50 workshops among institutes in Taiwan and international conferences in the past three years.
