54 Using Zen to Explain Zhuang-Zi in Fang Yi -Zhi s Burning Zhuang-Zi in Medical Land Min-Chieh Chiu Department of Language Education, National University of Tainan Abstract Zhuang-Zi s Zen had profound relationship with the history of Chinese thinking. In the past those people favoring Zhuang-Zi as well as Zen wrote the works of Using Zen to Explain Zhuang-Zi. Burning Zhuang-Zi in Medical Land written by Fang Yi-Zhi of Ming Dynasty was an obvious example. Some scholars preliminarily indicated that this book mostly uses Zen language to get a thorough knowledge of the aims of Zhuang-Zi. Nevertheless, how to get a thorough knowledge depends on the exploration and discussion. From the angle of Using Zen to Explain Zhuang-Zi on the studying, this research firstly deals with the negotiation between Fang and Buddhism, and then gives examples, investigates the book s explaining Zhuang-Zi by public case of Zen, and discusses the ways and contents of using Zen language. Finally, the research makes a review of all these contents. Zhuzng-Zi emphasized the presentation of the realm of thought of Toaism, and so did Zen. They inclined to physical proving, expressing the explanation by language. Fang always quoted the public cases of Zen to strengthen it, or took the realm of thought revealed in Zhuzng-Zi as the public cases for reference and studying, and pointed out the use of Zen language of the story. It has shown the role of the monk, Fang Yi-Zhi, and his Taoist graceful bearing. The purpose is to raise the queries, solve the suspected episode and get an understanding. There is one thing very special that the words of Fang s explanation of Zhuang-Zi are found to have no disclosure, or have nothing not to be said. This is a kind of subjective, scope-transcending analytic inference, or sheltered, or negative, or connotative Zen s thought, which comprehensively reveals the pointing out and skilful use of Using Zen to Explain Zhuang-Zi, and its special temperament.
