CHINESE TEACHING IN THE WORLD S H3JI, H%NY? JI%OXUβ No. 4 December 2004 Abstracts of papers in this issue The semantic and syntactic motivation of combinations of monosyllabic and disyllabic verbs and adjectives in Adj.2V and V2Adj. Phrases ZHANG Guoxian,p5 The diagram of combinations of monosyllabic and disyllabic verbs and adjectives in Adj.2V and V2Adj. phrases shows that the combination may be absent, distorted or symmetry. It is argued in this paper that the freedom or constraint in the combination does not only depend simply on prosodic features but is the result of semantic and syntactic constraints that reveal profound internal motivation. Key words prosodic features combinations of monosyllabic and disyllabic verbs and adjectives semantic and syntactic motivation The negative adverb Bi ( ) : Its grammatical meanings and the verbπadjective it negates SHAO Jingmin and L UO Xiaoying, p18 The grammatical meanings of the adverb Bi ( ) not only refers to prohibition, but also to dis2 suasion and obstruction. In addition, it refers to negative conjecture, warning and negative valuation. The difference of grammatical meanings is closely related to the semantic feature [ + controllable ] or [2 controllable ] of the verb or adjective that follows Bi ( ). The difference in person may also cause some changes in grammatical meaning. Key words Bi ( ) sentence negative volition controllability The positions of Y ng ( ) + O phrase in the B ( ) sentence LIU Peiyu, p27 The Y ng ( ) + O phrase has two possible positions resulting in two different B ( ) sen2 tence patterns. The different positions reflect different angles in which one observes an event. When the Y ng ( ) + O phrase precedes B ( ), the sentence seems integrated whereas when it follows B ( ), the sentence seems disjointed in structure. Which order is used is decided by principles of temporal sequence, semantic constraints, anaphora and salience. order Key words Y ng ( ) + O phrase B ( ) sentence event integrity disjointedness
